Chapter 223 - Chapter 223: Confrontation

Most people who acquire superpowers—especially those involving physical enhancement—rely almost entirely on instinct during combat.

To name a distant example, there is Superman; for closer examples, there are the younger Green Goblin and Morbius.

The situations are not quite the same. Superman has reached a level where raw power trumps all technique, crushing everything with absolute strength.

But the younger Green Goblin and Morbius clearly haven't reached that level yet.

Through previous battles, Batman had determined that the younger Green Goblin's strength was around ten tons, while Morbius was weaker, possessing only two thousand pounds—or nine hundred kilograms—of force.

Whereas Peter Parker's body, under Batman's ceaseless training, now possessed strength exceeding fifty tons.

An absolute disparity in power, and a world of difference in technique.

This caused the scales of victory atop the Empire State Building to tip overwhelmingly in Batman's favor.

Before the duel, Batman had prepared a total of seven plans for Morbius and the younger Green Goblin, but the sheer gap in power meant not a single one was needed.

Bang!

Batman turned slightly to dodge the younger Green Goblin's slash, bent his knee to block Morbius's claws, and followed up with an uppercut.

This heavy, incredibly fast fist was like a cannonball, and Morbius became the man who had stuck his head into the barrel.

With just one hit, his head snapped uncontrollably upward, and his body was sent flying toward the sky by the immense force.

Simultaneously, with a soft pop, Morbius's eardrums were ruptured by the shockwave of the heavy punch, and fresh blood immediately began to flow from his ears.

Morbius's facial features twisted and nearly shifted out of place from the blow; he could see nothing but stars, his mind a complete blank.

Whoosh!

Rain poured down from the sky as Morbius was knocked upward against the downpour.

Batman had already confirmed through combat that Morbius possessed a certain degree of self-healing ability, so he had controlled the force of his strike to the critical point of what Morbius could withstand.

It would neither turn his brain into paste nor squeeze his eyes out of their sockets, but it would incapacitate him in an instant.

While Morbius was still flying upward, a series of special spider-webs—designed to restrain the Red Hulk—followed close behind.

The pitch-black webbing was unaffected by the rain; it solidified the instant it touched the air, winding tightly around Morbius's body.

By the time he fell back down, he was bundled into a pitch-black mummy, which Batman casually hung off the side of the Empire State Building's antenna tower.

At the same time he punched Morbius away, Batman's fingers struck like needles, forcefully catching the blade of that green longsword amidst a flurry of glinting steel.

Snap!

The longsword, held in both of the younger Green Goblin's hands, was snatched away by Batman and tossed aside.

While the Goblin was still stunned, Batman fired another line of webbing that stuck to the chest of his battle suit.

Batman yanked hard, and the Goblin immediately stumbled forward, lurching right into Batman's grasp.

The moment he fell into range, Batman's fist—which had been gathering power—shattered the raindrops in its path and slammed into the Goblin's abdomen with a dull thud.

Pfft!

The younger Green Goblin immediately sprayed a mouthful of blood, his body bowing like a shrimp.

The smile on his face vanished completely, as did his shrill voice; his legs went soft, and he collapsed to the ground.

"Don't! Batman, it's me, Harry!"

The Goblin felt his insides churning violently; the intense cramping made it hard to breathe, but he hurriedly gritted his teeth and spoke:

"I'm Peter's brother, Harry Osborn!"

The voice coming from the Green Goblin's mouth now was unmistakably that of Harry Osborn.

Batman remained expressionless, firing a series of webs to bind the younger Green Goblin without mercy, hanging him up alongside Morbius.

Over two weeks ago, when Batman dealt with Norman Osborn, the man had feigned surrender only to look for an opportunity to attack.

At that time, Batman had determined through a series of details that Norman Osborn's surrender was fake and that the Green Goblin persona was still in control.

The same was true now. Harry Osborn was much greener than his father; Batman saw through his disguise at a glance.

Ignoring their subsequent struggles and pleas for mercy, Batman grabbed one in each hand like they were chicks and leaped off the edge of the Empire State Building.

In the rainy night, not a single soul could be seen on Rikers Island.

Nothing could be heard except the patter of the rain.

Batman carried the younger Green Goblin and Morbius all the way there and dumped them separately onto the ground.

"Peter entrusted both of you to me. But he didn't tell me how I am supposed to save both of you at the same time when one starts slaughtering criminals and the other is making deals with the monster inside him."

Morbius's self-healing abilities had already fully repaired his injuries.

Batman's voice remained low, yet it cut clearly through the curtain of rain into the ears of Morbius and the Goblin.

"Morbius, do you remember this place? You killed a total of thirty-one prisoners here on Rikers Island."

As he spoke, Batman stared intensely into Morbius's eyes.

Morbius turned his head away, pursing his lips and saying nothing.

But Batman gave him no chance to evade the issue. He walked straight up, hoisted Morbius up with one hand, and forced him to make eye contact:

"When the first prisoner died at your hands, I could understand that you couldn't control your bloodlust.

"But what is the reason for killing the other thirty criminals?"

Morbius looked at Batman's glowing white eyes, and his brow furrowed involuntarily.

"Who among those locked in prison isn't a vicious maniac? Are you shielding those criminals?"

Although fear still lingered in his eyes, Morbius couldn't help but retort when questioned like this by Batman.

"It is not shielding," Batman said, looking at Morbius. "Among those you killed, at least three had committed minor offenses and were in the process of appealing. The daughter of one of them had even just sent a letter."

"They weren't all on death row. At least half were only serving fixed-term sentences."

Minor offenses... appealing...

Morbius's eyes flickered, and a look of regret flashed across his face, but it was immediately followed by rage. He bared his fangs and tried to break free from Batman's grip:

"What exactly are you trying to prove? That I'm an out-of-control monster? Congratulations, you succeeded!"

"Do what you're supposed to do. Kill me?"

Batman shook his head silently.

"I am not a judge. I cannot represent the law."

After speaking, Batman took a letter from his utility belt, opened it, and held it in front of Morbius.

The rain quickly soaked the letter, blurring the handwriting, but Morbius could still read two sentences on the page.

One was "Mom and I are waiting for you to come home," and the other was "I'm going to become a scientist just like Morbius."

"Heh heh." The younger Green Goblin, paralyzed on the ground, let out a cold laugh. "How touching. The redemption arc of the genius scientist."

Batman released Morbius with a snap, letting him fall to the ground along with the letter, and turned his gaze toward the younger Green Goblin.

"Words can't change the facts. When I needed him most, Peter cast me aside. He's been deceiving me for a long time, feeding me lies like 'my father will definitely come back.'"

As the Goblin watched Batman walking toward him step by step, the mockery on his face grew even more intense.

"Get Peter over here. I want to confront him face-to-face."

Batman was silent for a few seconds. Looking into the Goblin's eyes, which were completely consumed by green, he slowly removed the cowl from his face.

"I am Peter Parker."
