Chapter 41 - Desires unspoken...

He could see it.

Not in her words. She hardly wasted those.

It was in her eyes.

The restraint sat there like chains pulled too tight, hidden beneath a face that never betrayed emotion. She looked at him the way someone stared at the edge of a cliff—drawn toward it, yet refusing to take another step.

She kept him close.

Close enough that he could hear the quiet rhythm of her breathing.

Far enough that he could never reach her.

He knew why.

It had been his decision. His boundaries. His innocence.

She had respected every one of them.

And somehow...

That hurt him more than if she hadn't.

Months ago, he wouldn't have understood what he was feeling. Back then, she had simply been fascinating. Dangerous. Beautiful in a way that made people hesitate before speaking to her.

Now...

His own body had become his greatest enemy.

He wanted her.

Not because she asked him to.

Not because she tempted him.

She didn't have to.

She only had to exist.

One glance from those impossible blue eyes left his thoughts in ruins.

The brush of her fingers against his wrist could haunt him for days.

Her voice lingered in his head long after she had walked away.

It was driving him insane.

His desires were innocent because he didn't even understand them.

But they were dark because they had become a need.

His body betrayed him first.

Then his eyes.

Everyone could see it except him.

The way they searched for her whenever she entered a room.

The way relief settled over him whenever she stood nearby.

The quiet ache whenever she left.

He craved her presence like air.

He only wished he understood why.

...

She watched him from the doorway.

He didn't notice.

He never did.

There was something almost painful about the restraint in her gaze.

She could feel it pressing against her ribs, demanding release.

One step.

That was all it would take.

One step toward him.

One touch.

One surrender.

Her fingers curled into her palm.

"No."

The whisper never reached him.

She knew herself too well.

She knew what lived beneath the calm expression everyone admired.

The darkness wasn't violence.

It was possession.

She didn't want pieces of him.

She wanted all of him.

Every smile.

Every breath.

Every vulnerable look he gave without realizing it.

She wanted to consume every part of him until the world forgot where he ended and she began.

That was what frightened her.

"I could crush him."

Not with strength.

Not with power.

With love twisted into obsession.

He was gentle.

Trusting.

His heart had never learned how cruel desire could become when it stopped asking and started claiming.

She could have anyone she wanted.

People admired her.

Desired her.

Feared her.

None of them mattered.

The only person she wanted was standing a few feet away...

And he was the only one she refused to reach for.

Because the moment she gave in—

The moment she stopped holding herself back—

There would be no restraint left.

No distance.

No escape.

She would never let him go.

He sensed it.

Some instinct inside him knew there was something enormous hidden behind those calm eyes.

Something waiting.

Something hungry.

He mistook it for mystery.

He had no idea how deep it truly ran.

And she prayed...

He never found out...
