Chapter 31 - 23 Positions III

Rain had started to fall again the night Elio found the file.

The precinct was almost empty, the quiet hum of fluorescent lights filling the long hallway. Most officers had already gone home, leaving the records room in its usual half-forgotten silence. Elio had only intended to review an unrelated case, something routine that wouldn't keep him long.

But the file had been there.

Locked in the corner drawer.

Stamped in red.

TOP SECRET — CASE CLOSED.

That alone had caught his attention.

Elio had always possessed the kind of curiosity that got cops into trouble. The kind that made them ask questions others were content to ignore. It had gotten him into danger more times than he could count.

It had also gotten him results.

He opened the file.

Inside were very few pages.

Almost nothing.

No name.

No background.

No known associates.

No fingerprints.

No confirmed identity.

Just a handful of crime scene reports linked by a single pattern—perfect kills, clean escapes, and investigations that always ended the same way.

Closed due to lack of evidence.

Elio frowned as he turned another page.

Then he saw the photograph.

It had clearly been taken from a distance. Whoever had captured it must have been hiding because the figure stood partially in shadow. The coat collar was raised, the hair falling forward enough to hide most of the face.

But the eyes were visible.

Onyx black.

Sharp.

Piercing.

Elio felt something tighten in his chest.

He knew those eyes.

He had seen them once before—close enough to see his own reflection staring back from them while a gun rested against his temple.

He leaned back in his chair slowly.

"...No way."

Nothing else about the person in the photograph was clear.

No face.

No name.

No gender.

Nothing.

Whoever she was, someone had gone to great lengths to erase every trace of her existence.

But those eyes…

Elio would recognize them anywhere.

He closed the file quietly.

One thought settled firmly in his mind.

Beautiful destruction.

Beautiful danger.

And for some reason, he wanted to know more.

---

Storm didn't know she was being investigated.

If she had, she likely wouldn't have cared.

Night had settled over the city when she stepped out of a warehouse near the docks. The rain had grown heavier, coating the pavement in reflections of distant streetlights.

Tora stood beside the black sedan parked nearby.

The moment Storm approached, Tora opened the back door.

"Everything's clear," she said calmly.

Storm slid into the back seat without speaking.

The car pulled away from the dock quietly.

For several minutes, neither of them said anything.

Then Storm spoke.

"You were watched tonight."

Tora's eyes flicked briefly to the rearview mirror.

"I noticed."

A car had turned onto the road behind them three blocks back.

It was still there.

Storm leaned her head back slightly, her gaze drifting toward the window.

"Persistent."

Tora's fingers tightened on the steering wheel.

"Should I lose them?"

Storm didn't answer immediately.

Instead she watched the approaching headlights in the side mirror.

Then she spoke again.

"Not yet."

---

Elio followed the car carefully.

Not too close.

Not too far.

His instincts told him he was right.

Everything about the black sedan felt… deliberate.

He couldn't explain why, but his gut said the person inside it was connected to the woman in the file.

The woman with the onyx eyes.

The rain made visibility worse, but Elio kept a steady distance.

Then suddenly the sedan turned sharply into a narrow side street.

Elio cursed under his breath.

He followed.

The street was nearly empty.

The sedan slowed.

Then stopped.

Elio frowned.

That wasn't normal.

His instincts screamed.

Too late.

The rear door of the sedan opened.

A hand grabbed his jacket.

Before he could react he was pulled violently out of his car and shoved into the back seat.

The door slammed shut.

The car sped forward again.

Elio barely had time to breathe before he realized exactly who was sitting beside him.

Storm.

The gun in her hand rested lightly against his temple.

Her expression was calm.

Completely calm.

"You're not very subtle," she said.

Elio's heart was still racing from the sudden ambush.

"How did—"

He stopped himself.

Storm's eyebrow lifted slightly.

"Your car was the only one following us for six blocks."

Elio exhaled slowly.

Fair point.

Tora continued driving without looking back, though Elio could feel the tension in the car.

Storm studied him quietly.

Then suddenly the car jerked slightly as it took a sharp turn.

Elio lost his balance.

Storm caught his arm instinctively, pulling him down before he could slam into the door.

The motion forced him half across the backseat, his body braced awkwardly against her.

Their faces ended up far too close.

Again.

Storm looked down at him calmly.

Elio froze.

This was becoming a pattern he absolutely did not like.

He pushed himself upright quickly, his face heating.

"This is getting ridiculous," he muttered.

Storm didn't seem bothered in the slightest.

"Your fault."

"My fault?!"

"You followed us."

Elio opened his mouth to argue, then stopped.

He hated that she was technically right.

Storm watched him for a moment longer.

Then she tilted her head slightly.

"Why?"

Elio hesitated.

He could lie.

But something about those eyes made lying feel pointless.

"I found your file."

Storm said nothing.

"There was nothing in it," Elio continued. "No name. No history. Nothing."

Storm's gaze sharpened slightly.

"But there was a picture," he added.

For a brief moment, Storm's eyes flickered with interest.

Elio met her gaze directly.

"I recognized the eyes."

Silence filled the car again.

Storm leaned back against the seat slowly, considering him.

The embarrassment from earlier encounters still lingered on Elio's face, but beneath it she noticed something else.

Determination.

Curiosity.

He wasn't following her out of fear.

He was following her because he wanted answers.

Storm studied him quietly.

Bubble gum.

Soft looking.

But stubborn.

Interesting.

Tora watched the exchange through the mirror.

And for the first time since meeting Elio…

She felt something she couldn't quite name.

Because Storm, who rarely paid attention to anyone longer than necessary…

Was clearly intrigued.
