Chapter 8 - The Encounter

Delfina walked aimlessly on the road, her heart filled with pain. She wanted to scream and yell at her wicked cousin and aunt but she knew deep down that she couldn't do that.

They had planned to wreck her life and now her life was over. How will she pay her son's hospital bills and buy his drugs? How will she send him to school? How will she feed and clothe him? Her thoughts ran wild as hot tears rolled down her cheeks and she swiped at them furiously.

She noticed the looks she got from people on the streets; some pitied her while some gave her a dirty look.

None of that mattered to her at this moment, all that mattered was that she might go to jail then who would take care of her son.

With a heavy heart and an empty purse, she headed to her son's school. She wiped her tears and tried to appear cheerful so she wouldn't seem sad to him, she didn't want to terrify him.

She tried so hard to focus on the road and vehicles as she crossed the other side of the road. She didn't look at the road properly and was still in the middle of the road when she was knocked down by a luxurious car.

Delfina fell to the floor groaning in peace as she clutched her chest. The car had managed to apply brakes before it could do any real damage to her.

She glared at the beautiful car in front of her, willing the owner to come out as she remained sprawled on the floor in the middle of the road.

The door opened and Enzo stepped out of his car. His eyes widened when he saw it was his surrogate from six years ago.

"What are you doing in the middle of the road?" he asked.

Delfina rolled her eyes at him. In her angry and depressed state, she had failed to recognize he was the same man who had humiliated her six years ago.

"It's none of your business. I was sure there was no car coming before I crossed," she snapped.

"Well, if you had checked very well or crossed faster rather than crawling like a snail then I wouldn't have almost run you over!" Enzo snapped too.

Delfina muttered profanities under her breath as she stood up from the floor.

"You're lucky you didn't run me over else you would have invited trouble for yourself," she threatened.

Enzo studied her expression. He knew from the redness of her eyes that she had been crying and he also knew that she didn't recognize him. He wondered what was making her sad but he didn't ask, he knew she wouldn't tell him, he was, after all, a stranger.

"I'm sorry, my driver almost ran you over. What can I do to make you feel better?"

Delfina's heart hammered in her chest as she wondered what to ask for. Here she was being offered a chance to make a request yet she couldn't bring herself to say anything.

"I don't need your help!" she finally said.

He sighed. "I'm offering to compensate you here, for running you over at least."

Delfina shook her head. She wanted to accept but she couldn't accept charity because the man was a stranger. "Thank you, I don't accept charity!"

Then she stormed off, slightly irritated that the encounter had made her lose time so she would pick up her son late. It also made her angrier at her penniless life so much that a stranger was willing to give her money because he had almost run her over.

Her heart ached as she increased her pace, tears clouding her vision once more. She took out her phone and dialed her uncle's number.

She needed his help and there was no way she was going to jail.

He picked up on the first ring.

"Hey, Fina. I was going to call after work so we could meet up in a restaurant with Ricco later today," he said.

Delfina smiled. Her uncle was always caring for her, she knew he would come through for her this time.

"Uncle, I need your help," she stated.

There was a pause on the other end of the line before he cleared his throat.

"I'm all ears, dear."

Delfina stopped by the roadside and began narrating all that had happened.

When she was done her uncle was shocked at all she told him.

"You mean Gemma and Lucia did all these to you and threatened my Grandson?" he asked angrily. Delfina sighed. "That's what they did, uncle. Now I have to find a new job, otherwise my son will die of hunger."

"Fina I'll get the money within three days from the bank for you but I can't promise you a new job," her uncle said.

She was excited. She could find a job herself.

"Uncle you've done more than enough then, thank you so much," she cried.

Her uncle chuckled. "Don't thank me. One good turn deserves another after all when I was in need you helped me."

Delfina smiled. "Thank you, uncle."

"I would like it if you would come and live in the mansion with Ricco for the meantime until you get a job."

She sighed. "I'll consider it, uncle. Thank you."

"Alright, see you soon."

She hung up and headed to her son's school a bit relieved but still sad, she was still jobless.

Enzo stared at the back of the angry retreating female and he was convinced that she didn't recognize him. He wondered why she had refused to collect money from him.

"Ramos."

His personal assistant and bodyguard was by his side immediately. "Do you recognize her?" he asked.

Ramos gave a stiff nod. He was a man of few words and over the years he's only answered to him so Enzo knew he could trust him.

"She's the surrogate, Sir."

Enzo massaged his temples as he entered the limousine.

"Let's go, Ramos. I can't miss this meeting and I have to pick up Nico."

Ramos entered the car and the driver drove off.

"I need a background check on her. Tell me everything you know about her, understand?" he ordered.

Ramos nodded. "Crystal, Sir."
