Chapter 358 - Chapter 358: The Wizard’s Book

"Like the Pukwudgie, the Wampus cat is one of Ilvermorny's mascots. Ilvermorny's forest has many Wampus cats," Newt answered Sean's question. "The magical creatures here form their own system, living by an ancient jungle law."

It also made Sean understand why the Wampus cat had been injured.

Newt—his old Hufflepuff senior—seemed to be subtly pointing Sean toward a path.

When Sean looked at him, Newt stood slightly angled, his speech a touch slow.

But it didn't look like it was Newt's idea—

So they began touring the various stitched-together biomes.

Newt walked slowly in front, while Sean—bundled up like a ball—craned his head this way and that behind him.

There were snowflakes as large as goose feathers, gorgeous auroras, deserts where gales swept everything clean.

Sean's hair frizzed into a mushroom cloud in the Thunderbird habitat. His clothes were corroded into holes by a Rune Serpent's drool. And he'd somehow ended up with a Bird-Snake in his pocket.

Even though the Nundu, the Swooping Evil, and the Billywig gave him no small amount of trouble, his enthusiasm for magical creatures only grew hotter.

If he could make Fairy-Tale Biscuits for these creatures—

Flight. Storm control. Instant teleportation that was nearly impossible to counter—

All of it would be within reach.

Sean knew what he should do, what he could accomplish in the short term, so even though he was tempted, he didn't change his plan.

He just felt time growing tighter and tighter.

Building an Undetectable Extension storage item, making a Wampus-cat biscuit, mastering the transformation for his second soul-avatar, uncovering the secret of Ravenclaw's diadem… his schedule was already packed full.

He couldn't help but sigh.

To Newt, though, that surging passion only made the old Hufflepuff's shy smile deepen.

"Professor Scamander—could I learn how you make Undetectable Extension spaces?"

Newt seemed in good spirits. As Sean reluctantly returned the Bird-Snake to its nest, he asked.

"Of course," Newt agreed with a smile.

Sean's eyes lit up.

Newt smiled too, feeling Dumbledore's description was almost painfully accurate.

[Although I've failed to find proof of his youth in other ways, in magic I can still tell—this is a child… a child obsessed with magic.

His relationship with magic is like yours with magical creatures. A nature like that deserves special attention…]

"I can only make simple spaces."

Sean needed three days to build the large space he wanted, but in the meantime, he'd still made a few small things.

He lifted the item hanging at his chest; a tiny book popped out.

In a second, it expanded into a volume edged in silvery-white trim.

Inside were parchments folded and stacked under Shrinking Charms—his way of carrying more books. It even contained all his insights on alchemical rituals and his notes on magic.

At the very center of the book sat a small box.

The moment the book opened, the box unfolded as well, expanding into a three-dimensional wooden case about the size of a small bag.

"I call it the Wizard's Book," Sean said, choosing a plain name. "But I still can't make a larger space. More importantly, Professor Scamander, I don't know how to create the natural environment I need."

He let a hint of confusion show on his face at just the right time.

If he couldn't form a natural habitat, how was he supposed to "pocket" a Wampus cat from Ilvermorny?

"Create?" Newt repeated shyly. "I didn't create it. I… cut a piece out."

"A Severing Charm—"

Sean reacted instantly, understanding how the magic worked. "Use a Severing Charm to split off space, then use Shrinking Charms to transport it, and Enlarging Charms to set it up—

Finally, use Isolation Charms to prevent different climates from interfering with each other. And if needed, stabilize each space with weather charms."

He murmured to himself, and the sheer difficulty of this alchemical device snapped into sharp focus.

At minimum, he'd need to learn three new spells—and weather charms, too, would vary depending on what each creature required.

Worse still, even mastering those spells didn't guarantee it would be stable.

The entire creation process was like walking a tightrope ten thousand meters up—stuffing multiple environments into a space that had already been magically extended… anything could happen in a chaotic spatial mesh.

Long-term stabilization was the real key.

By that measure… Professor Scamander was basically superhuman.

And with a world-class master standing right here, Sean couldn't think of anyone besides Newt who could teach him knowledge this difficult with ease.

Naturally, he had to consider: was this his one and only chance to learn Undetectable Extension spaces?

"It looks like you've studied the theory in advance."

At the suitcase's entrance, Newt placed the Bowtruckle he'd been carrying back onto its tree, and gently patted the little creature's head.

"It's difficult…"

Sean frowned. With only one Christmas break, learning all of this was—

Barely possible.

He had seven days. Fifteen hours a day. He would spend all of it on learning Undetectable Extension space-work.

"Can we start now, Professor Scamander?"

Sean's eagerness was practically overflowing.

"We can," Newt said warmly. "But I should warn you—making a proper space takes years of learning."

"I understand, Professor."

Sean nodded, then opened his panel:

[Intermediate · Wizard's Book Prototype: Beginner (270/300)]

This was the first time he'd seen the term prototype, and it suggested his intuition was likely correct.

A complete Wizard's Book—one that contained a true natural environment—was probably a high-tier alchemical creation.

"I'll do everything I can."

A trace of firm resolve showed in Sean's eyes.

At first, Newt didn't understand what that would mean.

He only realized after the suitcase-world had been stripped of a large portion of its relevant knowledge—and a single day had passed.

Since magical creatures class, Sean had been improving at a pace that felt almost un-magical.

Newt watched the interior of the Wizard's Book expand from wardrobe-sized to a thirty-meter radius in less than a day—like a Thunderbird taking off.

And it was stable. Those layers upon layers of carved runes practically screamed overflowing talent.

Hermes walking the world…

Newt smiled shyly, remembering The Daily Prophet's description.

Until—

"Professor Scamander… the Severing Charm is too difficult."

After shining so brightly in alchemy, a dejected Sean still hadn't learned the Severing Charm in the final half hour.

Newt's smile slowly froze.
