A light breeze blows through the darkness, rustling the leaves on the surrounding foliage.
I lean my head back slightly, closing my eyes and letting the cool air brush against my face, as gentle as a mothers loving caress.
Inexplicably, a tear comes to my eye. I let it slip down my cheek, cutting a warm path through the cold.
Head still tilted back, I open my eyes and stare up at the stars.
So many stars, millions upon millions of stars, bright, dim, twinkling, solid.
Stars must represent our lives. When we're born, a very bright star blinks on, and begins to dim as they get older.
Until eventually, they die, and the star blinks out, letting a new one replace it.
Unlike my star. It'll burn bright forever.
Never dim.
Never waver.
I blink away more tears, sniffling slightly. Above, the city sparkles like the millions of stars above in the dark sky.
I sigh, pulling out my headphones.
I power them up before turning on my phone and scrolling through my music.
I find a song.
Diamonds, by Rihanna.
Appropriate for a moment like this.
I click play and close my eyes and let the music take control.
