Chapter 10 - Chapter 10 – The Hidden Archives

The chamber beyond the glowing orb opened into a vast hall lined with towering shelves, each stacked with ancient books, scrolls, and crystalline artifacts. The air was thick with dust and magic, carrying a scent of old parchment and ozone. Faint golden light emanated from floating crystals, casting shimmering patterns across the walls, floors, and vaulted ceiling.

Arin's eyes widened. "This… this is incredible. The city's hidden archives." He could barely contain his excitement, but he forced himself to stay focused. "These books… these scrolls… they must contain centuries of knowledge, secrets of the city, maybe even the origin of Corvin's power."

Liora crouched, running her fingers across a crystalline orb resting on a pedestal. "Every artifact here is magical. We have to be careful. One wrong touch could trigger a trap."

Finn's voice trembled as he looked around. "It's… so big. So many books. How will we even start?"

Arin smiled faintly, eyes scanning the floating runes projected by the orb. "We start with the glowing symbols. The city leaves hints for those it deems worthy. Follow them, and we'll find what we need."

As they stepped deeper into the archives, the floor beneath them glimmered faintly, revealing a path lined with ancient symbols. Arin traced them in his mind, matching them with patterns from the black book. "These symbols… they're guiding us. Look, they form a map to the central section of the archive."

Liora nodded. "Then let's follow it. Stay close, and don't touch anything else. The city's magic can be dangerous."

Finn followed hesitantly, clutching his basket, eyes darting from shadow to shadow. "What if Corvin comes back?"

"He will," Arin said grimly. "But we've learned to anticipate him. Focus on the path and trust each other."

They moved carefully, each step lighting the symbols beneath their feet. Crystal chandeliers suspended from the ceiling refracted light into dazzling patterns, making the chamber appear infinite. Every book they passed seemed alive, whispering faintly in languages almost understandable, as if sharing secrets with anyone patient enough to listen.

"This is… amazing," Finn whispered. "It feels alive."

"Yes," Liora said softly. "The city itself is alive. It tests, guides, and warns all at once."

As they reached the central section of the archive, a pedestal rose from the floor, glowing with golden light. On it rested an open scroll, its ink shimmering, moving slightly as if breathing. Symbols hovered in the air around it, forming a protective circle.

Arin approached cautiously, key in hand. "This is it. The city wants us to read this… but it's protected. The symbols are magical barriers."

Liora crouched beside him. "We'll need to neutralize them without touching the wrong one. Follow my lead."

Step by step, they deciphered the symbols, drawing from patterns in the black book. Finn pointed out connections between the floating runes and the ones etched in the floor. "This one… it matches the sequence from the previous chamber!"

Arin's eyes lit up. "Exactly! That's the city guiding us. Keep tracing the sequence."

Shadows flickered along the walls, whispering warnings. Corvin's voice echoed faintly, carried on the magical currents of the chamber. "Curious children… thinking they can understand the heart of the city. But knowledge comes with a price."

"Ignore him," Liora said sharply. "He wants us to panic. Step carefully, follow the runes."

They moved in sync, following the glowing sequence. Arin adjusted the key against each symbol, the black book reacting with faint pulses of energy. Finn's hands shook, but he steadied himself under Liora's guidance.

Finally, the protective circle around the scroll dissolved, allowing Arin to read it safely. The scroll revealed diagrams, maps of the underground city, and notes on its history. Most importantly, it contained information about Corvin—how he had tapped into the city's power, and hints about a hidden weakness.

"This… this could change everything," Arin whispered, scanning the pages. "Corvin's power isn't limitless. There's a source… a core he relies on. If we find it, we might stand a chance."

Finn's eyes widened. "We could actually beat him?"

"Yes," Arin said, determination blazing in his eyes. "But we have to be smart. Every move counts. One mistake and the city—or Corvin—could destroy us."

Liora's gaze hardened. "Then we prepare. Gather every clue we can. Study the artifacts. The city itself is helping us—if we're clever enough to listen."

They explored further, uncovering ancient tomes filled with magical formulas, maps detailing secret tunnels, and notes warning of deadly traps. Every artifact held clues to Corvin's weakness, but each discovery came with puzzles they had to solve, traps they had to avoid, and shadows that seemed to watch their every move.

Hours passed—or maybe days, time felt warped in the glowing chamber. Finn's courage grew as he realized he could contribute, pointing out patterns and solving small puzzles alongside Arin and Liora. Their teamwork strengthened with every challenge.

"This is incredible," Finn said softly, placing a map on the pedestal. "We're learning so much. I never thought I'd… I'd be able to do this."

"You can," Arin said, smiling faintly. "You're braver than you think. We all are. Together, we're stronger than Corvin expects."

Suddenly, the chamber trembled. Crystals rattled, books shifted, and shadows flickered more violently. Corvin's laughter echoed once more, closer this time.

"You think you can hide in the archives?" his voice hissed. "Knowledge alone won't save you. The heart of the city will demand payment!"

Liora drew her knife, stepping protectively in front of Finn. "Then let him come. We're ready."

Arin's fingers traced the final symbols on the pedestal. "Almost done… just a little more, and the city's knowledge will be ours to guide us."

The floating orb in the center pulsed, casting a protective shield around them. Corvin's attacks struck the shield harmlessly, unable to penetrate the city's magic protecting those it deemed worthy.

"We're safe… for now," Arin said, chest heaving. "But this is just the beginning. With these archives, we'll understand the city, and we'll find Corvin's weakness."

Finn nodded, confidence replacing fear. "We can do this. Together."

Liora smiled faintly, wiping sweat from her brow. "And we will. No matter what comes next."

The hidden archives had revealed their first true advantage—knowledge, strategy, and hope. The city's magic, ancient and sentient, now seemed to acknowledge their courage and cleverness. The real challenge, the confrontation with Corvin, and the trials ahead would test every ounce of strength, wit, and heart—but they were ready.

Together, they would face the heart of the underground city—and whatever darkness awaited.
