Chapter 1 - Life

Bolting upright, Rayne looks around in all directions quickly. So quick that his eyes blur everything around him together.

'No ones here'

Putting his head back down on the hard floor Rayne sees the ceiling for the first time since yesterday. The ceiling was illuminated orange by the small amount of light coming in from the morning sun rising.

'Another day' Rayne thought with utter disgust.

He closes his eyes and tries to push everything out to finally go back to sleep for just a couple more minutes. But nevertheless sleep evaded him. Already annoyed that his day started like this he gets up and looks down at his sleeping area.

The only thing it consisted of was his black coat that he uses as a blanket. The coat wasn't with the other thing but instead a ways away like he threw it in his sleep.

'I need that jacket'

The jacket was his only property he actually owns. The house he was in wasn't his, it was a friend of his family that didn't know he was in there. The family friend was well off and Rayne always resented him for that.

Rayne's mother died first because of the pollution giving her some sickness no one even knew about. She was left coughing up blood while his father worked away to provide for the both of them.

Rayne sat in the room with her trying to give her just a bit of water but in the end she could never swallow it.

Rayne, sitting on his bed - that was as hard as the floor - stared at the wall until the room went dark.

Sometime after dark Rayne could only tell because his wall was very dark, his father came home. The door opened with a creak. Rayne, getting up with shaking legs slowly crept towards the main hallway where his father should be.

Rayne's father looked at him with sadness in his eyes like he already knew the fate that awaited him when he walked through that door. Rayne quickly glanced at him and then looked at the floor.

Their silent exchange went on for a couple of seconds before Rayne was the first to move. Rayne picked up his feet that felt like lead and shuffled across the room to move out of his fathers way.

"Where is she?" Father asked.

Rayne didn't have the strength to use his voice and just pointed towards the door where his mother was. Father shook his head, put down his coat and umbrella and went towards the door.

Rayne, who already knew what had happened, followed. He didn't know why but it was like his feet were moving on their own. Slowly they moved across the living room which was completely dark.

The living room had nothing special in it, just the standard couch that came with the house. The house itself had nothing special in it. They never tried to make the house into their own since they thought that if they did they would probably lose the house itself.

Rayne's father looked back at him and said,

"You sure you want to come in here"

Rayne had the uncertainty written across his face. Father took Rayne by the arm and dragged him towards his room. When Rayne was back in the suffocating room he was in all day, he heard something bang against the door outside.

Rayne's legs gave out and he hit the floor with a thud.

Outside in the hallway Rayne's father had a silent stream of tears coming from his face. He didn't want to do this to his son but he couldn't face her with him in tow. Looking down he saw that there was a chair where the handle was so Rayne couldn't escape.

'Why did it come to this?' Father thought.

The sound of the thud was dull. Father could barely even hear it. When he did it broke his heart even more. Taking all his strength he wiped the tears from his eyes and faced back towards the one place he didn't want to go.

The place that was the hardest for him to go. He had worked so hard to make the family come together just for it to be ripped away when they could almost move out of this horrible polluted city.

They wanted to move somewhere in the country and become humble farmers who lived off of what they had made from selling the crops. Instead he stood outside the door to Rayne's room which was locked inside it.

He moved his legs with great difficulty. He was passing through the hallway knocking most of the things over with loud bangs and cracks.

Rayne heard everything that was going on in the hallway. Of course he thought the worst was happening. He thought that father was breaking everything in order to find something sharp to cut himself leaving him without parents.

These thoughts made Rayne cry even harder. So hard that he could barely breathe. Eventually it caught up to him and he passed out.

Opening his eyes that were blurry from the tears that were still wet on his face as if he was crying in his sleep. He wiped them from his face and got up. His legs shaking he stumbled to the door and banged into it.

He finally gripped the door handle and tried to open it. The handle didn't even move.

'Did father really leave me locked in here like an animal when he was out there doing whatever the hell he's doing' Rayne thought with the anger growing inside of him. His rage which was nearing its limits kept building. When he thought that it was over it kept building.

'Father really left me all alone after mother was too weak to survive a stupid sickness and he was too weak to deal with everything else.'

Finally Rayne moved with such speed towards his closet. He grabbed a black coat and another shirt. He ripped off his old one and put on this new one that was white and somewhat formal. He puts on the black coat next and then moves towards his window.

The window which was never really opened because it was facing another building that was placed too close to his house. It was so close that he thought he wouldn't fit. Instead of opening the window he throws a tea tray at it.

The window smashed with ease. Before leaving he grabs a bag that he threw a couple of unimportant items in. He then moves towards the window for the last time. He kicks the glass that was still inside the window. He mounts his hands to give him leverage and pushes.

Once outside he really was squished to the other wall.

'Damn this is a really tight squeeze.'

Wanting to turn around and go back to his room to wait for his father to get him. Rayne instantly dismissed these thoughts.

'Father is already like mother. Both are dead and I'm on my own'

He was so tightly fit towards the wall that it felt like his air was limited. He moves quicker and quicker. His vision blackened more and more until eventually.
