Chapter 10 - HP: Chapter 10: Dual Core

I still remember that my first wand was made of elder wood and unicorn tail hair. Back then, I didn't want to leave the house, so Alphonse arranged for different wands to be brought for me to choose from. That way, I never got to experience this moment before… I wonder if this time it will be the same.

"Oh yes, my notes. One must always write everything down, as some people say before they grow old and lose their memory—and how right they are, for this branch of wandsmanship is quite complex and mysterious," said Ollivander, making exaggerated gestures. "The idea that a wand chooses a wizard, and that it can even change its loyalty, remains one of the most significant mysteries of this field. Difficult to explain, but easy to see."

"They are so mysterious that some wands are assigned according to the Celtic tree calendar, depending on the time of year. Wands also adopt characteristics from their wood and core, which help them find their rightful master," Alphonse added.

"Indeed. For example, Alphonse's wand, made of yew, is a rare one to see. Its owners are equally unusual and remarkable. The wand grants its wielder power over life and death. And on top of that, it has a Dragon Heartstring core—a core that produces stronger wands. They form powerful bonds with their owners but may change allegiance if someone defeats their master," Ollivander explained, carefully taking Alphonse's wand to examine it.

"This type of wand is well-suited for dark arts since it can also perform extravagant spells. Every wand is a whole new world of possibilities. That's something truly fascinating I learned from Mr. Ollivander," emphasized Alphonse.

"So there are endless possibilities depending on the types of wood and cores out there."

"There's still much to learn, young one. But I think that's enough of a lecture, hahaha. Now, it's time for you to choose your wand, sir…" A silence fell over us after Ollivander's words.

"His name is Dion… Dion Beaumont de Legrand," Alphonse broke the silence.

Ollivander's face reflected great surprise upon hearing my family name, and his gaze turned directly to me again.

"So you're Ava's son. It's been ages since I last heard about that unusual girl, so clever and skilled with magic," said Mr. Ollivander. "Is she here with you?"

The silence returned, and when I looked at Alphonse, his eyes were fixed on me, not knowing how to say something that might wound me.

"She passed away a few years ago, along with my father."

Alphonse was stunned by my words. He hadn't expected me to answer so directly.

"Oh… I see. A tragic event indeed. She was an incredible witch—not only for her talent but also for her brilliant personality. We will find a worthy wand for you, so your mother, from wherever she watches, can also see how extraordinary you are," Ollivander said, trying to ease the awkward moment.

"Believe me, Mr. Ollivander, Dion is far more talented than both of us were at his age. She, better than anyone, must know how remarkable he is," Alphonse said, a proud smile on his face.

"Extraordinary. That only makes me more curious about what kind of wand will choose you," said Ollivander, pacing back and forth in his little shop, pulling out different kinds of wands and placing them on the main counter.

After trying several wands, we realized it wasn't as simple as we thought to find one for me. I even asked for one with the same specifications as in my previous life, but it didn't respond to me the way I expected.

"This is rather strange. It's rarely ever this difficult to find a wand for a wizard," Ollivander admitted, eyeing me with a puzzled look. "Hmmm, perhaps…"

Ollivander suddenly ran to the back of the shop, leaving us with the intrigue of what he was about to say. Alphonse and I exchanged glances, not understanding what had just occurred to him.

"I found it!" Ollivander's voice rang out from afar.

"What did you find?" Alphonse asked.

"There is a wand that was abandoned at my shop's doorstep many centuries ago… It is a rare wand, different from the rest. We don't know much about its efficiency, but we do know how dangerous it is," Ollivander said.

Alphonse immediately held out his arm in front of me protectively, stepping between me and Ollivander.

"I won't let you give that wand to Dion," Alphonse said firmly.

"But… you of all people know he might be the one. If not, we can simply try again with the others," Ollivander replied, extending the box toward us.

Alphonse refused to take it, but Iolite jumped down from my head and padded toward Ollivander. First, she brushed against his legs with her body and tail, then proceeded to demand his attention until he petted her.

The moment Ollivander gave in, Iolite leapt up, snatched the wand box, and darted back to me. Her eyes locked onto mine, glowing faintly, almost as if telling me to take it.

Ollivander was left paralyzed by Iolite's agility and cunning in tricking him and stealing the box. The same astonishment showed on Alphonse's face—he made no move as Iolite placed the box in my hands.

Opening it, I found a rather plain wand, nothing different from those I had already tried. It measured 9¼ inches (23.50 cm), its base slightly oval in shape. Overall, nothing unusual—its most distinct trait being that it was rigid in flexibility.

As soon as I reached for the wand, Alphonse reacted immediately, grabbing my hand before I could test it.

"Be careful. This is no ordinary wand," Alphonse warned.

Though it took a few seconds, I soon felt the flow of magic coursing through it. At the tip, abundant green sparks burst forth, vanishing in just moments.

"Green sparks! Incredible. No one had ever managed to cast even a simple spell with that wand before—other than you, Alphonse. At least, until now," Ollivander exclaimed, leaning closer to examine it again. "And it even seems to be better controlled. Hmmm, this is the one for you, young Dion."

"I already told you—I won't let that wand stay with him. It's dangerous," Alphonse said in a threatening tone.

"Why do you say it's dangerous, Alphonse?" I had never heard of dangerous wands before. Sure, some used volatile materials, but those were defective wands—that's why they were dangerous. But this wand was far from that. In fact, I felt a deep satisfaction holding it, as if it belonged in my hand.

Alphonse turned his gaze to me, sighed, and began to explain.

"This wand is the only one of its kind. As Mr. Ollivander mentioned, it has been here even before I was born. Its origin is unknown—no one knows who crafted it. The Ollivanders studied and tried to replicate it, but this wand is made of sequoia wood and has two cores… something practically impossible, or extremely risky to attempt without the utmost care. Even with care, it's nearly impossible," Alphonse explained.

"It had been attempted before, but the results were always the same. Some of my relatives died in the process, and others never came close to anything significant. Aside from Alphonse, who managed to cast a single spell with it, no wizard before had ever been able to activate the wand… At the time, I don't know what was going through my head, but it wasn't my best decision. A very poor decision, believing a talented child could awaken the unknown power of such a unique wand," Ollivander added.

"And what are the two cores?"

"Spine of a White River Monster and Rougarou hair. Although spine wands are usually long, this one is counterbalanced by the Rougarou hair. Both cores are entirely different—one helps its wielder cast spells with strength and elegance, while the other is believed to have affinity with the dark arts, since the Rougarou is a very dangerous beast," Ollivander explained.

"And the sequoia wood?"

"Sequoia wood is difficult to find in good quality, which is why it is always in high demand. It has a reputation for bringing good luck to its owner. And even though we've used the same materials, we've never been able to replicate it properly. Perhaps there's still something missing we have yet to discover. But one thing we do know—producing this type of wand would greatly advance the growth of magical power in the world," Ollivander concluded.
