His lips hovered over mine, a breath away, the warmth of his breath fanning across my skin as he whispered, "Tell me you feel it too. Tell me I'm not alone in this."
My body betrayed me before my mind caught up. I closed my eyes. For one dangerous second, I almost let myself fall.
But then my chest tightened, panic clawing its way up my throat. I forced my eyes open, trembling.
"No," I whispered, the word fragile but resolute.
His brows snapped together. "What?"
"I can't do this. I'm sorry," I said louder this time, pulling back just an inch.
The anguish that crossed his face was raw, unfiltered. "Avery, no. Please, don't do this to me." His voice cracked with sudden urgency. "Don't tell me I'm imagining this. Don't tell me I've fallen this deep for nothing."
