Chapter 144Sonia's POV
"So tell me, Xavier," I whispered, my throat tight, my voice trembling in a way I couldn't control. "Are you always protecting me because of your loyalty to your Alpha… or because of me?"
The words slipped out before I could stop them. I didn't know why I asked him that question. I didn't know what kind of answer I expected. All I knew was that my heart was pounding like a war drum, my palms clammy, and the heat of his nearness was eating away at my defenses.
His eyes locked on mine, fire meeting fire.
And it scared the hell out of me.
"I really want to know". I said, barely above a whisper.
For a long moment, neither of us breathed. My chest rose and fell rapidly, and the way he looked at me, hungry, restrained, and conflicted. It made my stomach twist.
Then suddenly, without warning, he leaned in and kissed me.
It wasn't gentle. It wasn't planned. His lips brushed mine like a spark that set off an explosion inside me.
