Chapter 7 - Chapter 6: False hope

Once Hayel returned home, his determination to drink got lower and lower. The news of someone dying, as well as what the creature said, kept making him uncomfortable.

The more he thought, the more paranoid he got, the more paranoid he got, the more he told himself to not think. And yet, the more he told himself to not think, the more he thought.

And as the that never ending loop of thoughts caused him to scare himself more and more, he decided that drinking was too risky.

If he was drunk and something happened, he had even less chances of surviving. However, the way the alcohol might make him less paranoid was tempting, but he decided strongly against it in the end.

He put the jar underneath his bed just in case Layla wouldn't see it when she comes to talk to him later about his ability.

Just now when he talked to her, she probably didn't say anything about it since they were outside. Not everyone had to know he got an ability, at least not yet.

He sat down on his bed and put his hands on his face, his head hurt from the things happening around him.

Tired from not sleeping the day before, he decided that he should try and rest, despite the thoughts plaguing his mind.

He tossed and turned as the sun illuminated his room, the brightness of it calming him.

Finally, he fell asleep.

However, not peacefully.

Again he dreamed of the tall, lanky creature. This time in the forest where he saw it, and then at the peculiar graveyard.

The sight of it made his heart race, and sweat dripped down his forehead. Abruptly opening his eyes, gasping for air, he realized that a lot of time has passed, the sun was not directly shining on his window anymore.

Shit, I need to go to work!

He got up as fast as he could, took his wallet, put on his old brown boots and ran outside.

After an hour of a very vexing walk, he finally got to the city. The city was as loud as ever, the streets full.

Not knowing how late he was, he finally got to the library, where Marco Kinnel, the owner of the library, was standing outside talking to someone, seemingly of a high standing.

Marco Kinnel glanced at him, furrowing his eyebrows, he ignored him and continued talking to the other person as Hayel walked past them.

Hayel thought nothing of it, and quickly grabbed a broom to go sweep the floors.

Then, he paused.

Realizing that he could see that sir Kinnel has furrowed his eyebrows at him, he almost jumped from joy.

My eyesight is returning! Damn, I thought I was going to be half blind forever! How the hell did I not realize sooner?

He quickly continued to sweep, giggling to himself like an idiot.

I am not blind anymore hehehhehe…Wait… How late was I again?

Squinting his eyes and then opening them wide to see how much better his eyesight has gotten, he realized that it's still a bit blurry when he looks at something in the distance, but up close he could see the details of his hand quite well.

Feeling quite happy that he will not be half blind forever, he continued sweeping the floor, wondering if his eyesight will return to how it was before he damaged it.

Actually… it doesn't matter if it stays like this, at least I can see a lot better than before.

At the corner of his eye he noticed someone walking towards him, finally remembering that he was late to work, all sorts of excuses started coming to his mind.

He looked at Marco Kinnel, his boss, who will definitely pay him less for coming late. He couldn't help but feel a bit nervous in front of this man.

Marco Kinnel stopped in front of him, looked at him up and down as if trying to make him feel bad and said slowly, "There are many people that would fight each other over this job who would not show such disrespect, do not think I will let you act like this out of pity".

Hayel, not knowing what to say or if he even should say anything, just stared at him as he walked off.

Apologizing won't do anything, making up an excuse if his boss didn't ask would have been even worse.

But Marco Kinnel is right, despite the fact that Hayel is not paid much, it's still better than what some people get, if we are talking about people that live in the village.

Not very excited about the idea that he could lose his job if he makes more mistakes, Hayel made sure that he cleaned the library as well as he could.

Returning home while the sun is setting down usually would have been a beautiful sight, but after everything that happened the only thing he could think about was getting out of this forest as soon as possible.

In reality, while he knew that at home he was not actually safe, it still gave him a false sense of security.

This path from the city to the village rarely had any incidents but Hayel doesn't believe that creature is afraid of the few knights on patrol.

If The Order was not so cruel to people from the village, he might have warned them about that lanky bastard. However, they would probably kill him first to not spread fear, then they would perhaps go kill that creature.

Or maybe it would be a suicidal mission for them.

Either way Hayel would probably be too dead to witness whatever goes down, or perhaps be will be killed tonight by whatever chooses to do so.

It's a dead end for him, and yet he doesn't feel like ending it himself right now, still hoping that whatever is going after him will lose interest.
