Chapter 41 - Distant Memory

Glacialers floated around me as the cold wind blew through my hair, with some of it getting in the way of my eyes. I could hear birds flying above my head before the horn of the ship blew. I've been here before. It was a distant memory, one where my father took me sailing with him and his fleet. The memory was always dear to my heart. The smell of the sea left my heart at peace.

Turning to my left, I look out to sea. About three ships were to my left, and if I had to guess, another three were to my right. We were in formation creating an arrow. I could still remember my father having me learn all the different formations that my family used and the different scenarios for each one. It was all practically ingrained into me.

My father was a very harsh man, with a strict schedule for my siblings and me. We were taught everything there was to running this family. The different formations when it comes to fleets, how to survive out at sea, and various forms of combat. I followed every order he gave to the letter; my siblings, on the other hand, didn't. They would always fool around; they knew that since they weren't the eldest, they would have to worry about becoming the head of the family. That, and it didn't help that my mother babied them.

Snapping back from reminiscing, I can't help but wonder what was happening. Was I not just on campus? I look around once more. This place wasn't just a memory; it was something else entirely.

'Is this my sanctuary?' I thought. 'It looked different from what Eirian described; he told me it was dark, stars shooting through the sky, and an altar in the center. Mine had none of those descriptions. The only thing that was the same was the water around us, but that was just a coincidence, if anything.'

"Fey!" I yelled out, "Can you hear me?!"

I don't hear anything. Nothing spoke to me; all I could hear was the roaring of the sea that blew.

As I looked around, I found something off at the deck. It was an altar. Excited, I go running to it. If I made a pact with the God of Numen, that I could find a way out of here. All that Eirian offered was a what-if? Not in a certain way. Fey would guarantee a way out of here. I could finally go home.

When I reached the altar, I noticed something: it was destroyed.

"What the-" My heart sank.

The words on the altar were cracked, with parts of it fallen in. You can still notice the phrase, "Offerre, et accipies virtutem," but parts of the phrase were gone. The star on the side cracked as well.

Not giving up on the idea of making a pact, I turned towards the sky, "Fey, I am here to make an offering. Please, speak to me."

Nothing spoke; the wind only roared.

"Please, I am begging you, speak to me." I let out my arms.

The sea went quiet, the boat calmed, and the birds went silent. The world felt frozen for a moment. All there was was me in it.

"Fey—" I let out once more, but before I could finish my sentence, the winds grew stronger, and the tides of the sea did too. Almost falling to the floor, I catch myself. Rain starts to fall, and the bright blue skies that were there once before are not gone.

As the tides keep getting stronger, pushing the ship around more and more. I find it hard to keep my balance. I reached for something to hold onto, but ended up falling.

"What is happening?!" I yelled, trying to get back on my feet. When I get to the point of kneeling, another tide hits the ship, shaking it, causing me to fall once more. As I tried once more, I finally got back on my own two feet, but that didn't last for long. I turn back to the head of the ship I see a massive tide making its way towards me. When it reached the ship, it practically engulfed it. I grabbed onto the ship's railing as the sea almost swept me away.

Soaked, I looked around, and the other ships were gone, destroyed by the sea and other galciaers around.

"Fey, I am here to make an offering, please listen to me!" I begged once more. "I am here to offer-"

Before I could finish my sentence, the ship was hit by a glacier, knocking me against the railing. The ship was falling apart. As the ship split apart down the middle, I climbed to the top in a desperate attempt to make a pact with the God of Numen.

"I want to offer my—"

Another tide engulfed the ship, bearing me down with it. Around me as I sank to the bottom, I could see the ship making its way down along with the other ships as well.

As I tried to swim back to the surface, I took one last breath of fresh air before I was pulled down by a rope tied around my foot, connected to the ship. My surroundings grew dark. The pressure grew increasingly intense. When it does, it makes it hard to hold my breath. Not being able to hold it anymore, the air leaves me, sinking to the bottom of the sea. The world, which was once raging, was now quiet in the depths of it all.

'Am I going to die?' I thought. 'Was it really all going to end like this?'

I began to suffocate in the deep ocean as my body wanted to breathe, but there was only water around me. My body begged for air; it needed it, but this world was cruel.

When it does, the last remaining thoughts come to mind, 'I'm sorry, Father.'
