Chapter 54 Rejection
On their second day in Enmat, the Night Watchers of Tingen finally met their local captain, Edward Crawford.
Welcome to Porto Enmat.
He had thick brown hair and good looks, but his high cheekbones and narrow eyes made him look somewhat mean. "I am Edward Crawford, the local Night Watch captain and a Sequence 6 'Requiemr'."
He was one rank higher than the captain.
Lu Ze thought to himself. Enmat Port is quite prosperous, with a large and complex urban area, indeed requiring more Night Watchers and higher-ranking Extraordinary Beings to guard it. Speaking of which, this was the first time he'd heard the name of the "Sleepless One" pathway sequence 6. A Soul Soother? It sounded like something related to vengeful spirits.
After he finished speaking, the people from Tingen began to introduce themselves:
"Leonard Mitchell, Sequence 8 'Midnight Poet'".
"Klein Moretti, Sequence 9 'Diviner'"
"Luze Longdor, Sequence 9 'Mystic'".
As soon as Luze finished speaking, the atmosphere changed. The Night Watchers standing behind Edward shifted their expressions, turning their bodies and exchanging glances, looking surprised and uneasy.
Edward's lips curled up almost imperceptibly.
"I had heard before that Dunn made a very risky decision to let an extraordinary person with a dangerous path join his team. I didn't expect it to be true. I admire his courage."
His implication was that Dunn was reckless and foolish for allowing someone like Luze to infiltrate the Night Watch team.
"I am very grateful for Captain Dunn's help; his generosity and kindness are admirable." Lu Ze sensed the underlying meaning in the other's tone and retorted without hesitation, "Don't you think so, Ms. Daly?"
Hearing him say that, Dai Li, who was standing behind him, seemed to want to laugh, but she held it back after her eyebrows and eyes curved slightly.
Edward's face turned cold at this rebuttal.
He was a Sequence 6 powerhouse, yet he was rebuked like this by a low-level Extraordinary. His expression was somewhat displeased.
"Furthermore, this dispatch arrangement was proposed by His Excellency Cecima of the Holy Temple. If you have any objections, you may send a telegram to inquire." But Luze did not give him a chance to speak again, and continued, "If you really do not need our help, I am also happy to return ahead of schedule."
This is the High Butler's order. Do you think I want to clean up your mess? You don't welcome me, and I don't like you either. So what if you're Sequence 6? You're still not as powerful as the High Butler, are you?
The other night watchmen started talking loudly, seemingly surprised by Lu Ze's attitude.
Edward narrowed his eyes, staring coldly at Luze, before finally smiling. "Of course I support Lord Cecima's decision. Let's begin."
After saying that, he turned around and led everyone into the hidden underground space.
Similar to Blackthorn Security, the confidential matters of the Enmat Port Fishing Club are also hidden underground. Considering that the local Church of the Goddess of the Night is just across the street, the underground structure is probably quite similar.
As I descended the spiral staircase, the gas lamps on the walls dispelled the darkness, and the chaotic sound of footsteps echoed between the stairs.
Lu Ze's eyebrows gradually furrowed.
The deeper he went, the stronger the corrupting aura of the true creator became. Even with footsteps covering his ears, he could still hear faint murmurs. The night watchmen around him, upon hearing this, began to show signs of distress.
The murmurs grew louder, like invisible tentacles covered in filthy slime surging into the ear canals, licking back and forth on the eardrums, polluting everyone's spirits. Leonard and Klein also showed obvious discomfort.
Reaching the bottom, and following the central passageway to the Chanis Gate, Luzer saw the thing imprisoned in front of the gate.
Why should this thing be called? Perhaps it was once human, with a normal body and limbs. But now, its body has swelled to more than twice its original size, its bright red flesh bloated and twisted, its protruding fingers writhing like some kind of fleshy earthworm. Upon closer inspection, pieces of cloth remain on the monster's body. What was once its face has become a blur, leaving only a gaping maw filled with sharp teeth, emitting distorted and incomprehensible sounds.
Lu Ze heard the heavy breathing of the two people beside him; clearly, the twisted monster and the sounds it made made his two colleagues uncomfortable.
The monster was imprisoned in a cage resembling a birdcage. The cage's surface exuded an inexplicable majesty, suppressing the monster and rendering it unable to move, only able to emit terrifying sounds.
The two night watchmen standing guard on either side of the cage were pale and looked like they were about to give up, only managing to hold on by sheer willpower.
"He was the only surviving crew member from that slave ship, and was spared from being silenced because he was apprehended in time."
Edward explained, "But because he's become such a grotesque mess, we can't get any useful information from him. We haven't gotten any other clues besides him, because everything has been handled so thoroughly."
In other words, this monster is the only breakthrough.
Lu Ze understood the situation and nodded.
"Have you ever tried psychic reading or divination?"
At this moment, Klein spoke up and asked.
"We have two brave support staff who made the attempt, and both of them were contaminated to varying degrees and are still receiving treatment."
"The psychic," Daly said from the side, her expression grave.
pollute
Klein couldn't help but take a breath and stopped asking questions.
"Well, Mr. 'Mystic,' do you have any ideas?"
After Edward finished explaining the situation, he turned to look at Luzer and asked in a seemingly friendly manner.
Can I come a little closer?
Lu Ze asked.
"certainly."
After receiving an affirmative answer, he approached the cage and circled the monster twice. He was so close to it that anyone else would probably have succumbed to the whispering attack and fainted, but the illusory ocean in his mind shielded him from its influence.
The night watchmen in the distance were surprised to see him looking so calm.
After circling the cage and staring at the monster for a while, Lu Ze looked up and said, "No problem, I can get clues from him."
Hearing him say this, the crowd stirred up a bit, but quieted down when Edward turned around and glared at them.
What are you going to do?
Edward asked Luzer.
"His body has been implanted with flesh and blood, turning him into a bomb. I can use a ritual to remove this flesh and blood, and then use its spirituality to find the trace of its owner," Lu Ze said slowly. His rich library of rituals provided him with many options, and he only chose the one that was most useful.
Then he saw Edward across from him shake his head in what seemed like regret.
"So you mean you're going to hold a ritual to corrupt an evil god in front of the sacred gates of the goddess Charis?"
"I'm sorry, but if that's the case, please allow me to refuse the ceremony."
