Chapter 42 - Chapter 42: The Council's Countermeasure

The quiet of dawn was deceptive. Mukul's senses tingled—the Council of Shadows had been waiting, observing, and now they struck. From the core they had left behind, a hidden weapon activated: a surge of shadow energy that rippled across the city, twisting streets and summoning phantom guardians designed to disorient and attack.

"They've anticipated our moves," Mukul whispered, golden aura flaring as he scanned the distorted skyline. "This isn't just a strike—it's a trap."

Meera's gaze was sharp, scanning the energy patterns. "They're using residual power from the core. It's controlling constructs, illusions, and even manipulating the environment. We can't let it gain momentum."

Kavya grinned, twirling her dagger. "Residual power or not, I like a challenge. Let's make it exciting."

Anaya frowned, tone firm. "Exciting won't save us. Strategy, coordination, and calm precision will. Focus."

Saira's calm voice added, "Observe, anticipate, and act as one. Unity is our greatest defense against manipulation."

Liyana leaned casually, spinning her lockpick. "And style helps. Even if the city is full of phantoms, we'll make it look cool while saving it."

Mukul nodded, formulating the plan. "We split into two teams. Anaya, Meera, and I tackle the surge head-on, neutralizing the central energy nodes. Kavya, Saira, and Liyana handle peripheral constructs and protect civilians. Timing and coordination are critical."

They moved swiftly, golden light from the artifacts illuminating paths through warped streets. Shadows twisted unnaturally, guardians multiplied, and energy surges threatened to overwhelm them.

"Stay close!" Mukul shouted. "Don't get separated!"

Meera and Anaya struck first, dismantling approaching constructs with precise, coordinated attacks. Kavya leapt from above, striking multiple phantom enemies, while Saira redirected destructive energy pulses toward harmless areas. Liyana disabled wards and traps, clearing safe paths for civilians.

The hidden weapon—an enormous shadow core—pulsed violently in the city centre, feeding energy into constructs and illusions.

"We need to destabilize it," Mukul shouted, golden threads weaving through the air to intercept energy surges.

The team moved instinctively. Meera attacked weak points, Anaya dismantled controlling nodes, Kavya disrupted peripheral constructs, Saira intercepted dangerous energy flows, and Liyana neutralized auxiliary wards.

Mukul concentrated all his golden energy, channelling it through the artifacts. Light surged in a blinding wave, striking the shadow core directly. Guardians faltered, illusions flickered, and the city's streets slowly returned to normal.

Breathing heavily, Mukul looked at the women. Each was bruised and exhausted, yet determination shone in their eyes.

"Teamwork," he said softly. "Coordination, trust, and unity—that is why we survive and triumph."

Kavya smirked. "And style, don't forget style."

Anaya rolled her eyes but smiled. "Coordination wins. Chaos doesn't matter."

Saira nodded calmly. "Unity and vigilance always prevail."

Meera added firmly, "Protecting each other—that is our true strength."

Liyana twirled her dagger, "And charm always helps."

The hidden weapon had been neutralized, but Mukul knew the Council would adapt and retaliate again. They were relentless, but he and the women had proven they could face even the most cunning countermeasure.

Golden light pulsed softly from the artifacts, a reminder that strategy, courage, and unity would guide them through the shadows still to come.

The city was quiet again, but Mukul's heart knew the war was far from over. The Council's countermeasure had been just a taste of what was yet to come—and he and his allies would be ready.
