Chapter 6 - The Log Books

The log books held valuable information. Or at least that was what I was hoping. majority of the information in these books was wiped away. Maybe time or some other factor had taken a toll on the words of these books, making them unreadable for the most part. But that isn't to say I gathered no information. The first book was almost completely gone, but there were a couple bits and pieces from log 4 and 16. From these books I have found an incomplete map of the area, as well as what I think is information on 'Energy'. For the map, all I really have is where the lab is, the shape of the stream that I followed, and some sort of scratched out shape that looks to be farther up the stream. As for the information on 'Energy', it would take some time to understand, but also it would require some experimenting to see if this was true. The information was a bit spaced out and only came in bursts.

The first thing I learned was that apparently 'Energy' comes from something that has a lot of energy inside of it. I saw the mentioning of multiple power sources that I knew of being apart of this phenomenon like coal, uranium, etc. From what I could tell, When you absorb one of these sources of energy, you can then redirect the energy that it holds outward. This confirmed my suspicion that the material I absorbed and the one in my pocket was coal. Well not exactly confirmed but definitely gave credibility to the thought. Then I saw something about manipulating the rate at which 'Energy' is output. The exact word they used when talking about 'Energy' was 'Dynamo', but the descriptions of it sounded similar, so I'll take that as the new name for now at least. But The logs described something about using Dynamo for things other than producing explosions. It described that the rate that Dynamo was used and the frequency mattered greatly into the outward effect it would carry. It mentions something about fire, which leaves me hopeful. To be able to use this new power to make fire would be a huge boon for me in this game of survival. Eating raw fish wasn't exactly the safest, and there were bound to be problems acquiring fish at some point. Being able to cook and have a source of heat is absolutely necessary for my long term survival. There were also implications about other things that could be produced but anything beyond that was gone.

It took me hours to finally finish sifting through all the pages to make sure I didn't miss anything. After recounting some of what I learned internally. I had become numb to the shock after reading, exploring, and learning over the past couple days. But when I let silence hit was when things really began to hit me. I don't know where I am, I don't know what the hell is happening, and I don't know whats inside me now. Nothing makes sense according to how I lived before, and despite doing nothing but learn and try to expand my horizons for days I feel even more lost than before. Its a feeling of shear defeat. While I move around towards a goal I feel fine, but it only makes it worse when it hits me at times like now. I know nothing about my family's whereabouts, or even mine for that matter. I was never much of a survivalist before I got here, I've only survived up until now because I was lucky. Soon enough I'm sure the stream will have fewer and fewer fish for me to eat. I haven't seen any plant life that looks edible. I haven't even seen a fucking animal aside from the fish. I was just a random guy, and now I have to figure out all this stuff to try and survive. The adventurers heart in me loves this feeling, and the opportunity. Yet the rest of my being remains terrified of the infinite possibilities of my fate. As I lay in my divot, overcome with emotions, I let a few tears slip through my defenses. Maybe a sob here or there. For who I was holding back for, I'll never be quite sure.

The next morning came despite my worrying. No matter how much I shrink away from the future, it comes ever closer. I stood up from my pile of brush and saw the sunlight starting to reach into the ravine. I slid aside my humble 'door' and crawled outside. To my right I could see the sun coming up over the mountain. To my left was a distant other end of the divide. I decided the first thing I should do in the morning is try to figure out how to make fire. For now I would try to do it every morning, noon, and night. That would give me enough time to regenerate my Dynamo, to improve upon this power as fast as possible. I walked through the crack back to the stream and followed it down the mountain. It felt like I was beginning to get used to the plant life around here. There were shrubs every now and then, but what dominated the land were the trees. The hollowed trees were a strange sight, and they covered this mountainous land until the plains I was at before. Fortunately for me the lack of bugs or any other sort of critters came as a blessing, but also a curious situation. I know the bare minimum about nature, only generic things that are taught it high school biology. But even to me this didn't seem right. It seemed like this place that I was had nearly no ability to carry life. Nothing wanted to remain here other than the trees who already had their roots to keep them here. Other than the fish, nothing stayed here. Hard to tell why but it was just something that stuck out to me.

Once I made it to the stream, I began to think more on what it meant by changing the rate and frequency of Dynamo. I could guess that the rate refereed to the speed that I push Dynamo through my weapon. But the frequency felt more abstract. To say that frequency needs to change sounds like its referring to some sort of waves. I can connect this to the idea of light waves that I learned some about in college. Light, and sound for that matter, flow in waves. The frequency of a wave depends on the speed at which it oscillates. In Lehman's terms, this would mean I need to increase the speed of Dynamo while it flows. This is the best understanding I can come up with based on thought alone. It has no real standing in reality if I am being honest, and my understanding of these subjects is flimsy after leaving this knowledge dormant for so many years. The real question is, how on earth do I increase the speed of dynamo to test this theory? Answers will only appear with time.

My first idea to start to break down this abstract subject, I sit down and assume a lotus position. Maybe it is the media making me thing this, but it feels very relaxing to sit in this position. I feel like a monk and honestly that helps me feel like I can concentrate.

I first begin with closing my eyes and feeling that ball of dynamo in my chest. It feels like a ball of living string. It moves, pushes, pulls, it wriggles around inside of me like a snake in a hamster ball. I reach out to touch it, not with my hand but my consciousness. Its like if I was imagining i was touching it. I pinched it and tried to pull some of the string away from the group. As I held it I felt it vibrating on its own. I tried to will it to move around my body. It seemed to follow a general path that I wanted, but my control over it was not finely tuned in any way. If I drove a car like this I'd get a DUI. I continue to try to move it around. It leaves a trail behind it, slowly dragging more dynamo out into the trail. after a bit of adjustment, I could at least make it move to where I wanted more or less. I then tried to draw one line from the source and my finger. I held it up in front of my body, and felt the line come across my chest. It went through my shoulder, down to my elbow, and eventually resting on my finger. Once it reached the skin of my index finger, I met resistance. It felt like a wall, and it was difficult to push past it. I kept pushing and pushing, but it didn't budge.

"Maybe it needs a bit of momentum?" I pondered.

I tried to pull back the string to the base of my finger and attempted to launch it through the membrane. I felt it rush up my finger, and through the barrier. At that moment, a brief pop came from the tip of my finger. The worst part of it all was… It hurt. A lot.

After a quick bout of tears and screaming profanities, I collected myself and had a quick look around. Luckily only the trees would have seen it, but unfortunately, their leopard print surfaces are starting to look like disdained faces. Maybe I am going a little bit crazy left out here alone.

'Hopefully this isn't one of those all in my head kind of things. well honestly I'd love to wake up right about now.'

"not sure how I feel about that one" I punctuated.

But continuing my previous research, I decided to use a small twig as a medium this time. From how it felt using sticks before, I remember it was incredibly easy to let dynamo flow through my hand.

'Not to mention that It hurt like a bitch'

Using a stick now, it was easier and safer to use dynamo than before. the resistance of dynamo leaving my body into the air wasn't present when leaving the stick. Why that is will remain a question, but that isn't new in my life at this point. But now that I've set my baseline for further study, I gathered up a bunch of twigs, and attempted to understand the concept of changing my frequency. I feel as though I can assume the vibration that I feel when I hold a string is related to the frequency. Now the log didn't say whether to speed it up or slow it down. I'm just gonna guess and find out. Not that I could choose what I do or don't do with this at this point.
