Chapter 53 - Chapter 50: Don't leave me

I stood there as I saw Gideons body wrapped in white cloth slowly descends into a hole.

The chaplain prayed as Gideon was getting buried.

With a book on his hand.

With his face completely covered in white cloth.

Not showing a single ounce of skin.

Next to him was an assistant.

Who carried an thurible in his hands.

Swinging them back and forth.

Letting the incense smoke roam freely in the air.

Then the the soldiers who buried Gideons body soon refilled the hole where Gideon rests.

Letting the earth consume his body.

Thud

The chaplain closed his book and walked over to us.

"I am very much sorry for your loss, his death was a tragedy."

"It's alright reverend Johann, thank you for your consideration." Mara thanked.

"Yeah, we got lucky we were able to attend his funeral with the situation we are in." Lena said.

Johann bowed lightly.

"It is my pleasure to be with you but I must go now, there are other burials waiting for my prayer. If you need any help, you can ask me however you want."

"Thanks, reverend Johann." Tomas stated.

The chaplain soon left with the soldiers that buried Gideon before.

We turned around and headed back to the trench but before we did, I noticed someone missing.

"Have you guys seen, Wesley?" I asked.

"No? I just realized his missing." Hermann stated.

"Yeah, where has he gone to?" Tomas looked around frantically.

Checking my surroundings, I only saw the the crumbling city and the stretching forest.

If I were Wesley... where would i be?

I thought deeply on what I would have done.

And it came to mind.

"I'll go look for Wesley, you guys can go back if you want." I ran off into the trees.

I thought that maybe, he would be in the forest to be alone and quiet.

That was the only quiet place in the war.

Running across the trees, branches, grass and dirt.

When I stopped in the middle of the track, I looked around.

All I could see were the never ending forests.

"Damn it, Wesley, where the hell are you..."

Then I saw it.

Someone poking out behind the tree.

Hugging his knees with his face planted on it.

I slowly walked forward.

"Is that you Wesley?" I asked.

No response.

Seeing his silence, I decided to sit the opposite of where he was facing.

Resting my back against the wood as I looked up upon the sky.

With branches, leaves and the blue cloudy sky.

"You know... in our 17 years of life together... I've never seen you like this before...

I know how you feel... losing a good friend you've known for years... just to die in front of your very own eyes. It's not something new really..."

Wesley stayed quiet.

I scoffed.

"I honestly don't know what to even say, some sort of inspirational wording? I've never been good with poems in the first place so how the hell am I going to help you with my words...

But... please don't let his death pull you down. He was a great friend... maybe sometimes stupid and weak but that's what made him... him. And you still have me! And Tomas, and Amelia, and Hermann... well not Hermann really because we're not really friends but more like mutually understanding but you get the idea!"

I kept thinking to myself if the things I said were even good.

Maybe he would get the wrong idea or it doesn't help.

I gulped.

"Please, Wesley..."

Soon I had nothing to say.

All I could think of was our past life.

I rested my head against the wood.

And closed my eyes.

***

Wesley slowly raised his head.

His eyes all watery and red.

He could sense Lukas was asleep.

He crawled towards him.

Seeing Lukas's resting face.

Wesley with a solemn face.

Sat right next to him.

Resting his head against the tree.

And slept together.
