Chapter 2 - Bab 2. In to The Abyss

The air changed the moment Jinwoo Ha stepped away from the cave where he had treated the dragon. A heavier, almost metallic scent clung to the damp stone walls, and shadows seemed to stretch farther than they should, as if the forest itself were breathing. This wasn't just a deeper part of the cave—he realized with a twinge of excitement—the area was an Abyss, a zone untouched by human settlement, where danger and opportunity intertwined like roots beneath the soil.

He adjusted his satchel, making sure the vials of magical essence from the dragon were secure. Every container was a potential edge—tools for experiments, leverage for future trades, or raw power he could study. The thought made him grin. Survival in this world wasn't heroic—it was calculated.

Ahead, the ground sloped sharply downward into a narrow corridor lined with luminescent moss. Soft blue and green light pulsed rhythmically, almost like a heartbeat, illuminating the jagged path. Jinwoo crouched, scanning the walls. Tiny crawling creatures scuttled along the stone, antennae twitching. Their exoskeletons shimmered, reflecting the phosphorescent light in kaleidoscopic patterns.

"Interesting… edible? Dangerous? Magical? All of the above, probably," he murmured, jotting notes into a small waterproof pad. Every observation was potential profit—or at least a life-saving detail.

A sudden sound—a low, clicking hiss—made him freeze. One of the creatures, about the size of a rabbit but with the armored sheen of a beetle, emerged from a crack. It had six legs and three glowing eyes. Jinwoo studied it carefully.

"First encounter. No heroics. Let's gather data first," he whispered. He extended a gloved hand slowly, not to touch it, just to see its reaction. The creature tilted its head, clicking in a rhythmic pattern.

Jinwoo grinned. "Communication attempt detected. High intelligence relative to size. Risk: low. Reward: unknown. Excellent."

He quickly scribbled down a diagram of the creature's gait and eye placement. If he could harness even a fragment of its energy, it might power one of his future experiments—or at the very least, provide insight into the Abyss ecosystem.

Further down the corridor, the terrain dropped into a cavernous opening, wide enough to hold dozens of trees—though the "trees" were unlike any he had seen. Their bark shimmered like metallic copper, leaves floated lazily in the air without branches, and a soft hum of energy vibrated through the roots. Jinwoo knelt, examining the soil. Small motes of light, like fireflies, drifted upward, interacting with the plant life.

"Fascinating… symbiotic energy network. Perfect for testing reagents," he muttered. He extracted a tiny drop of sap and placed it into a portable analyzer. Data streamed instantly: traces of magical energy, low-level toxins, and micro-nutrients that could enhance vitality if processed correctly.

A sudden rumble echoed from deeper within the Abyss. Jinwoo's heart rate quickened—not out of fear, but anticipation. He adjusted his satchel and reached for a small vial of neutralizing serum, just in case. The rumble was followed by a flash of faint red light bouncing off the cavern walls. Something moved fast—too fast to identify at a glance.

"Alright… first real challenge. Let's see what we're dealing with," he muttered, crouching behind a rock formation. He peeked around the edge and saw a medium-sized beast, roughly the size of a wolf, but covered in sleek obsidian scales. Its eyes glowed with a crimson hue, and small sparks of static energy arced along its back.

Jinwoo's analytical mind kicked in immediately. "Diet? Predatory. Behavior? Aggressive. Potential threat? Moderate to high. Opportunity? Very high. If I can calm or treat it, the knowledge alone is priceless."

He stepped slowly into the open, carefully placing a vial filled with a faintly glowing liquid on the ground. The creature froze, tilting its head curiously. Jinwoo used calm, measured movements he had perfected while handling reptiles.

"No sudden gestures… approach as if nothing will happen… observe response…"

The creature sniffed, sparks dancing along its scales. Jinwoo scribbled notes rapidly: "Reaction: cautious, exploratory. Tail flicks = irritation. Movement = controlled aggression. Possible magical discharge if provoked. Experiment viability: 78%."

"Perfect. Just the right kind of challenge to test theory number one," he muttered, uncorking a second vial with a mild sedative-enhancing formula. Carefully, he sprinkled a few drops near the creature, watching its reaction.

The beast hissed, sparks jumping dangerously close to Jinwoo's boots. He froze, heart calm but eyes sharp. "Drama level: medium. Risk: manageable. Reward potential: high. Let's negotiate."

Slowly, the creature lowered its stance, sniffing the air around the glowing liquid. Jinwoo whispered under his breath: "If this works, first client in the Abyss… payment in knowledge, energy, or both. Not coin, naturally."

Minutes passed in tense silence. Then, as the creature's posture softened, a faint aura of energy drifted off it—measurable, usable. Jinwoo's grin widened. "Excellent. Observation successful. Energy transfer initiated. This is just the beginning."

He jotted a final note: "Client temperament: volatile but teachable. Recommended approach: measured exposure to magical reagents + consistent behavioral reinforcement. Long-term: profitable."

Stepping back, Jinwoo surveyed the cavern. Every glowing plant, every scuttling insect, every magical pulse was data—and data in this world was power. A smirk crossed his face.

"So, Abyss… you're going to be very interesting," he muttered. With careful steps, he moved deeper, vials ready, notebook in hand, prepared to turn every risk into opportunity.

The Abyss grew darker and denser the farther Jinwoo Ha went. The glowing moss underfoot thinned, replaced by a slick, black stone that seemed to drink the faint light from his vials. A soft hum, low and almost melodic, resonated through the cavern walls. Jinwoo crouched, examining the vibrations with an impromptu sensor he had cobbled together from his portable tools.

"Frequency of resonance… roughly aligned with elemental energy pulses. Interesting," he muttered, jotting notes. Every pulse, every hum was data, energy, potential leverage. In this world, observation was currency, and Jinwoo intended to invest wisely.

A sudden clatter echoed ahead, louder than before. Jinwoo froze, scanning the shadows. Out of the darkness slithered a massive, armadillo-like creature with crystalline plates along its back. Each plate emitted a faint glow, pulsing rhythmically. Its size rivaled that of a horse, but it moved with surprising agility.

"Large client… high risk, high reward," Jinwoo whispered, crouching low and analyzing. The creature sniffed the air, its glowing eyes narrowing. Jinwoo's mind raced, calculating approach vectors, possible reactions, and potential magical yield.

He took a deep breath—not in fear, but in preparation. Carefully, he laid out a trail of glowing sap mixed with sedative serum, leading toward a natural alcove in the cavern. The creature followed hesitantly, sniffing and clicking.

"Perfect… patience pays," Jinwoo muttered. He observed its breathing, scale luster, and muscle tension, jotting everything in his waterproof notebook. A slight tremor in the crystals along its back indicated elemental energy flow, which could be extracted safely if approached correctly.

Minutes stretched into an hour. The creature was cautious, but curiosity eventually overcame instinct. It leaned forward, nibbling at a sap drop. Jinwoo seized the moment, administering a precisely measured dose of serum, enough to calm it without harm. Sparks of energy arced along its crystalline plates.

"Observation: successful. Energy extraction: moderate but usable," he whispered, sealing a new vial. Another victory, another step toward building his Abyss portfolio.

As he worked, Jinwoo noticed a small fissure in the cavern wall, from which a faint, silvery mist seeped. Curious, he approached and dipped a test strip into the vapor. Data flashed immediately: high concentration of elemental magic, with properties reactive to both biological and alchemical stimuli.

Potential reagent source… very high value," Jinwoo murmured. He jotted detailed notes on how to collect it safely, imagining potions, tools, and enhancements he could craft. Every observation strengthened his position—not as a hero, but as the most pragmatic healer this world might ever see.

A soft rustle behind him drew his attention. From the shadows, a smaller, winged creature emerged, almost bat-like, but with scales along its spine. It hovered midair, observing him with keen, intelligent eyes. Jinwoo's grin widened.

"Ah… a curious client. Perhaps test subject number three," he muttered. He extended a vial with glowing sap. The creature tilted its head, circling cautiously. Jinwoo noted every twitch of its wings, every shift of its glowing eyes.

He began experimenting subtly, dropping minute amounts of serum near the creature to gauge reaction. Sparks of energy arced as it interacted with the substance, and Jinwoo quickly collected a few pulses into tiny vials.

"Payment received… without a single coin," he whispered, pocketing the samples. "Exactly as expected. Energy, knowledge, compliance. Far more valuable than gold."

Time passed, and the Abyss grew quieter. Jinwoo used the moment to review his notes, cross-referencing energy pulses, creature reactions, and potential applications. Every vial, every observation, every tiny interaction increased his leverage in this new world.

As he prepared to move deeper, a low, distant roar echoed from far within the Abyss. Not a dragon, not yet—but something massive stirred. Jinwoo's pulse quickened slightly, but his face remained calm, analytical.

"Ah… a potential big client. Or hazard. Either way, opportunity," he muttered. Adjusting his satchel, he moved forward, ready to turn danger into profit once again.

The Abyss was vast, dangerous, and unpredictable—but Jinwoo Ha thrived on precisely that kind of challenge. Every shadow hid data, every pulse energy, and every encounter profit waiting to be claimed.

With a final glance at the glowing moss and crystalline walls, he whispered to himself:

"Adventure isn't about heroics… it's about intelligence, timing, and capitalizing on every chance."

And with that, he vanished deeper into the unknown, notebook in hand, prepared to conquer the Abyss—not with brute strength, but with mind, skill, and opportunism.
