When Leo hurried back to where the instructor and students were, he found that almost everyone was staring in shock at a huge advertising screen on the side of a building.
A news report was playing on the screen. It was an instant report from Gotham City, the camera a bird's-eye view from a helicopter. The city was a sea of flashing police lights and burning fires. An abandoned factory had been turned into a wasteland, the ground collapsed in a five-meter-deep crater. It was a city ravaged by a natural disaster, and you could almost smell the strong smell of gunpowder in the air.
While the alien invasion was happening in New York, a fierce battle beyond human imagination had been raging in Gotham.
In the center of the battle, a tall man in a black, bat-style armor, a beautiful woman holding a gold longsword and a round battle shield, and a woman dressed as a journalist in an ordinary shirt…
Leo's face was solemn. His aunt had been participating in another war today.
The camera zoomed in. A tall man with a red cloak on his shoulders was confronting a huge monster, bigger than the Abomination, ugly, hideous, and terrifying, and covered in highly dense muscles.
The tall man in the red cape… everyone on earth knew who it was.
Superman.
But Superman, who had always been invincible, who could lift a Boeing in his hand and smash a mountain, was now entangled with that terrible monster. A flashing green spear in his hand was plunged into the monster's body, but his chest was also pierced by the monster's sharp black claws.
Superman and the monster were locked in a deadly embrace, like an ancient, taboo sculpture, standing motionless on the ruins.
Scarlet blood flowed down from Superman's perfect, strong body. Many people who watched the news, all over the world, sighed for no reason. It turns out that gods can bleed, and their blood is still red.
Superman opened his mouth in pain, and his wailing cry, like a physical force, rushed out.
Soon, he and the terrifying monster, still entangled with each other, tilted slightly, and both fell in the middle of the ruins of the battlefield.
Superman lay on the ground, covered with iron and blood.
"On January 2, 2012, at nine o'clock in the evening, Superman died in battle."
Everyone who watched the news report was silent.
"Superman, died in battle? Really?"
Countless people couldn't believe it. But it was true.
Today, after the simultaneous battle of New York and the death of Superman, mankind had learned a cruel truth—there were terrifying alien forces outside the earth, and even above the earth, there were unknown existences that could kill Superman.
Fear, trembling, panic.
The things that had been hidden behind the world were now completely revealed. It was as if humanity had returned to the primitive stage, before they had ruled the earth. A new era had begun.
In the conference room of the S.H.I.E.L.D. headquarters building in New York, a man in a suit with a bald head and elegant glasses slapped the table hard. "What's going on?! Not only Loki's mind scepter, but our original Tesseract is lost! You Avengers must take full responsibility!"
At the conference table, Tony Stark, without his steel suit, was absently fiddling with a water glass. Dr. Banner, recovered from his Hulk state, yawned. Captain America, Steve Rogers, sat with his helmet off, saying nothing. The two S.H.I.E.L.D. agents, Black Widow, Natasha Romanoff, and Hawkeye, Clint Barton, pretended not to hear any questions.
"Can you pour me a glass of water?" Tony asked, motioning to the water glass in his hand, and then glanced at the bald man. "By the way, who are you?"
"I am Agent Sitwell of the S.H.I.E.L.D. agent team," the bald man said, his eyes twitching with anger. "I have the right to deal with all the follow-up matters of the Battle of New York!"
"Really," Tony shrugged. "Where were you when we were fighting?"
"Pay attention to your attitude…" Before Agent Sitwell could finish, Dr. Banner suddenly twitched, a sign that he was about to turn green. Sitwell and the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents standing behind him subconsciously stepped back.
"Don't mind me," Dr. Banner said, flicking a hand. "You continue."
At that moment, the door of the conference room opened, and a one-eyed black man dressed in black walked in, followed by a tall female agent.
"Agent Sitwell, you should go out first," the one-eyed black man said.
"Yes, Director," Sitwell said, and left the meeting room with his team. "Director," he said before he left, "you have to understand, on the congressman's side, it is difficult for me to explain."
S.H.I.E.L.D. Director Nick Fury had no expression on his face. When the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents were gone, only the Avengers were left in the meeting room.
"Where's Thor?" he asked calmly.
"He went back to God's Domain," Tony replied quickly. "Said he was dealing with his brother, Loki."
"As a war criminal, Loki will be given due sanctions," Nick said, his one eye serious. "I believe you all know that Superman was killed not long ago. And in the Battle of New York, our losses were heavy. It cannot be regarded as a complete victory. In the future, there are still many dangers waiting for you Avengers."
He paused and asked, "What do you want to say?"
"Armor, weapons," Tony said immediately. "We need to arm the world with armor."
"Tony," Captain America frowned and retorted, "that idea of yours is too extreme."
"Extreme? I don't think so," Tony shook his head.
"Let's not discuss whether the world needs to be armed with armor," Dr. Banner joined in. "Anyway, if we're going to upgrade our armored weapons, our current equipment is not strong enough. For example, you can use me as a prototype to build an anti-Hulk armor. It can restrain me if I'm out of control, and it can be used as a heavyweight armor to be put into the future battlefield."
"Banner, you know me," Tony's eyes lit up. "It's not just anti-Hulk. We need more types of anti-armor weapons."
"What about you two?" Nick looked at Black Widow and Hawkeye, who were sitting silently.
"We need more members," Hawkeye said casually, touching the back of his head.
"I've been thinking about a question," Black Widow said suddenly. "Today, who was the mysterious man who joined the battle to help us?"
The question hung in the air. Every member of the Avengers fell silent. They, too, wanted to know who the powerful existence that had quickly reversed the Battle of New York on their own was.
