Larissa's POV
Harlan practically toppled from his seat, overcome with laughter. "How did I completely miss hearing about this disaster?"
"You were finishing your degree," Mom said, dabbing at the corners of her eyes where tears had formed from laughing so hard. "Larissa stormed through the front door that evening and announced she was swearing off romance permanently."
"And here she is now, involved with Carson Gary," Opal observed, her tone filled with disbelief. "What a dramatic improvement from Lord Bryant."
"Carson doesn't parade around in velvet cloaks, thankfully," I replied with deadpan humor.
"Just designer suits that cost more than most people's cars," Joe added.
Before anyone could continue the conversation, the waiting room door swung open. Dr. Coleman stepped inside, his surgical cap still in place. The laughter died immediately, replaced by tense silence.
