After lunch today, Aoko Aozaki had dashed up the mountain to the magus's workshop to find her older sister, Touko Aozaki. The day before yesterday, she had finally gotten her sister to agree to go out with her today, and she was bursting with anticipation.
Her sister, Touko, didn't go to school at all. Since she was a child, she had been learning magecraft from their grandfather in the workshop deep in the mountains. Although many outsiders had visited in recent years, she hadn't formed a deep connection with any of them, so the two sisters were actually very close.
But not long ago, someone named Alice Kuonji had arrived. Her sister had suddenly become very close with that person, but Aoko didn't like that silent and cold witch.
Fortunately, that witch had moved into the Western-style mansion in Misaki Town, while her sister still remained in this old castle in the countryside.
"Oh, Aoko, you're here."
Aoko pushed open the door and saw Touko reading at her desk.
Though she was curious about what she was reading, Aoko had no intention of prying. She pushed Touko towards the wardrobe. "Alright, sister, hurry up and change. We're going out!"
"Okay, okay, don't rush me," Touko said unhurriedly as she opened the wardrobe to pick out her clothes. "What are we buying in town this time?"
"We're not going to town this time," Aoko said with a grin, sitting on her sister's bed.
"Huh?" Touko, having taken off her shirt, leaned back so the wardrobe door no longer blocked her curious expression. "Not to town? Are we going to the wheat fields then?"
"Nope! Sister, hurry up and change. You'll know when we get there!" Aoko bounced on the edge of the bed, feeling the mattress's springiness, full of excitement.
Seeing her sister being mysterious, Touko didn't dawdle. She quickly changed into a pale yellow pleated lily dress, grabbed the wallet she rarely used, and was then dragged out of the workshop by her sister.
The rest of the trip was planned by Aoko last night. She had even secretly asked their mother for advice. Hearing about her little travel plan, her mother was surprised and worried, but in the end, she told her what to do.
They walked through the green wheat fields, and she took her sister, who had never traveled far, to the station. She had planned to have a fun day with her sister in Tokyo, but she hadn't expected the train to be so crowded.
"My mistake. Sorry, sister. I didn't expect the train to be so packed." The two sisters held hands, with Aoko leading the way, looking a bit unhappy. It was the first time she was taking her sister on a trip, and to encounter something like this—it was not what she had planned.
Touko, who was not used to seeing so many people and was looking around in amazement, heard her sister's words and smiled calmly. "It's alright, Aoko."
Aoko, not giving up, weaved through the train car. Suddenly, she cried out excitedly, "Sister, sister! Quick, come over here, there's a seat!"
Squeezing out of the crowd, Aoko saw that there was an empty seat next to a girl her age. She immediately asked if anyone was sitting there, and upon getting a negative answer, she quickly pulled her sister out and pushed her into the seat. Then, after a thought, she sat directly on her sister's lap.
Relieved that her sister wouldn't have to stand the whole way, she felt a sense of accomplishment and became even more excited. She began to boast to Touko, her hands waving around. She seemed to have bumped into something in the process, but her attention was on Touko, so she didn't pay it any mind.
It wasn't until her sister suddenly hugged her tightly and apologized to the person next to them that she realized something had happened.
She turned her head and saw the person next to them looking at Touko with a resentful (?) gaze. Feeling that her possession was being coveted, she got a little angry. Although she wanted her sister to interact more with strangers, she didn't want her to be taken away. "Hey! Don't you bully my sister. Even though it's her first time out, I'm Aozaki—"
Before she could finish, her sister cut her off.
After that, Aoko glared at the girl who was as cute as her but who, for some reason, ignited a nameless fire in her heart. It wasn't until she saw the other girl's amazing facial expressions change that Aoko realized she might be a bit of a fool.
So, she patted the other's shoulder with pity and said a few comforting words, feeling sorry for her. Such a cute person, but a little foolish. I wonder what will happen to her when she grows up.
And as a result, her sister, for some reason, covered her mouth.
After that, the three of them didn't talk anymore. Aoko continued to excitedly tell her sister things she found interesting, while the other person went back to reading their book.
Aoko was disdainful of this. It was the weekend, and judging by her clothes, she was out to have fun, yet she was pretending to be a good kid. How despicable.
However, she soon noticed that her sister seemed to be very interested in that person. Although she was a little dissatisfied, she was more happy that her sister was showing interest in a stranger.
She knew very well what their Aozaki family was like. Her grandfather was a Magician, someone she used to think was an all-powerful magus. But a year ago, after she had taken her dying kitten to her grandfather for help, she finally faced reality.
—A Magician is not human, and a magus has no humanity.
To prevent her sister from becoming like that, she was doing what she thought was useful.
If her sister was interested in this person, she had to give her a push. With this idea in mind, Aoko looked at the other person.
And with that look, she too was captivated. The person was quietly reading, their slender fingers casually turning the pages. An indescribable aura surrounded them.
It was an aura very similar to that of the person named Alice Kuonji, both lonely and detached. But this person didn't have that feeling of pushing people away. Instead, there was an inexplicable sense of calm.
Aoko was still too young to understand what it was exactly. She looked at the book in the other's hands and thought, Could it be the content of this book that's affecting this person?
With that thought, her body moved before her mind could, and she snatched the book, breaking the strange feeling that surrounded the other person.
Sure enough, after the book was taken, the unusual aura around the person vanished. They first blinked in confusion, then looked at her with annoyance and said, "The world is so beautiful, yet you are so irritable..."
Although she didn't quite understand, she felt it wasn't a compliment. Aoko didn't care, because her goal was achieved. She deliberately pretended not to know how to read the title and asked her sister for help, so that her sister and this person would have a chance to interact.
But she didn't expect her sister to be more interested in the book. Her plan having failed, Aoko had no choice but to chat with this person herself.
Time passed quickly. As they talked, Aoko discovered that this person was quite interesting. They didn't seem annoyed by her endless chatter and even gave her the impression of being easy to bully.
And for some reason, looking into those beautiful red eyes, she felt like she was seeing Little Red Riding Hood.
In the end, it turned out that her usually quiet sister couldn't put the book down and even started fighting over it.
As a younger sister, she felt this was rude, so she jabbed both of them in the armpits. When they let go, she took the book.
