Hearing Le Zhengling's words, Nrvnqsr Chaos couldn't help but marvel at his comprehension. For a child to possess such composure and ability to process information was incredible. It solidified his resolve to save his life.
"Don't worry," Nrvnqsr Chaos reassured him. "I have ways to shorten the process and guarantee its success."
"But can you be sure that the one who regains their sanity will still be me?"
At Le Zhengling's counter-question, Nrvnqsr Chaos fell silent. Even he didn't have an answer to that.
After all, the process of becoming a Dead Apostle first required one to die. Then, rationality would be restored in that corpse. But would the personality that returned truly be the same person?
Although Nrvnqsr Chaos hadn't detailed the process, Le Zhengling knew it well.
The evolution from a Ghoul to a Dead Apostle was a one-in-ten-thousand chance. The process required a special inborn physical adaptability. In principle, the higher one's potential, the greater the chance of surviving to the later stages. Most people couldn't even become Ghouls; the vast majority would turn into another type of [The Dead].
These [Dead] were mindless puppets, controlled as extensions of the Dead Apostle. They weren't even considered true vampires, merely hunting humans for the energy needed to survive. Since they were linked to the Dead Apostle, more than half of the energy they obtained from preying on humans would flow back to their master.
Satsuki Yumizuka from the story of Tsukihime was an exception among exceptions. She probably had the highest adaptability of any human, possessing the potential to skip the entire process and become a vampire almost instantly. She was resurrected as a vampire in less than half a day after being bitten. Her vampiric adaptability was comparable to that of the Twenty-seven Ancestors from the distant past.
It was because of this unique quality that Satsuki Yumizuka was able to retain her complete self when transitioning from human to Dead Apostle.
Le Zhengling seriously doubted he had that kind of constitution. Although Nrvnqsr Chaos probably wasn't lying, he didn't dare to take the gamble. More importantly, he didn't want to become a creature that couldn't live under the sun.
"Your doubt is worth exploring," Nrvnqsr Chaos, the scholar, noted, setting another research topic for himself. "Then, the second method: implanting my Soil of Genesis into your body."
Hearing the second proposal, Le Zhengling once again weighed the pros and cons, feigning ignorance as he asked, "And what is that?"
Nrvnqsr Chaos's scholarly spirit flared up again. Living up to his fan nickname of "The Professor" from Le Zhengling's past life, he began to speak at length, this time revealing everything from his identity to his abilities without reservation, seemingly unafraid of him leaking the information.
After explaining everything, Nrvnqsr Chaos paused, waiting for Le Zhengling's decision.
And Le Zhengling, using the information he already knew, filled in all the blanks.
Setting aside Nrvnqsr Chaos's identity, the so-called Soil of Genesis was the vortex formed by the factors of 666 beasts within his body, simulating the primordial chaos of the universe.
Le Zhengling felt this was a huge exaggeration.
Simulating the universe? Isn't it just a collection of Earth's life genes? And an incomplete one at that. Setting aside comparisons to Tiamat's Sea of Life, this thing was probably similar to the Holy Grail's mud—something with strong side effects.
It was a conglomeration of beast factors formed through magecraft, and it would take hundreds of years to organize the chaos within his body into a system tree. Right now, this thing could only grant its user powerful immortality and the ability to reproduce the beasts within. Moreover, accepting this thing could very well turn him into the man's clone.
After eating the noodles, Nrvnqsr Chaos had become unusually easy to talk to, so he didn't rush Le Zhengling as he fell into thought.
"Are there no other ways?" The unspoken meaning was that he didn't want either option. Le Zhengling sighed and asked cautiously.
"These are the only two methods I have." Nrvnqsr Chaos wasn't angry. He took out a small glass vial from his pocket, opened it, and extended his index finger over the mouth. A mass of black, viscous liquid flowed into the vial. After sealing it with a cork, he handed it to Le Zhengling.
"It seems you are more averse to the first method, so I have chosen the second one for you. The choice to use it is yours. I hope I won't receive news of your death upon my next visit, because I would like to eat those noodles again."
With that, he left under Le Zhengling's conflicted gaze.
Long after Nrvnqsr Chaos had gone, Le Zhengling finally got off the table. Too many things had happened, and he was mentally and physically exhausted. After locking the shop door, he returned to his room, collapsed onto the bed clutching the vial, and fell into a deep sleep.
He woke up the next day at noon. Thankfully, it was the weekend, so he didn't have to go to school.
His head was still groggy when he first woke up, but when he remembered the events of last night, he hurriedly looked at his hand. Discovering the vial was gone, he panicked.
Fortunately, after a brief search, he found that the vial had just fallen onto the floor, seemingly intact.
Relieved, he stared at the vial for a long time before finally locking it in a drawer. He decided not to carry it with him, fearing that an accident might break it, with unknown consequences.
"Grandpa, you told me to be a good person, but now, the choice of whether I can even remain a 'person' is so difficult..."
Since yesterday, his peaceful life had been thrown into turmoil as if by a cruel joke.
First, he discovered he wasn't in an ordinary world. Then he was almost killed. Just when he thought it was all over, he was told he could die at any moment, right after he had resolved to live a good life. And yet...
Thinking of this, he placed a hand over his heart. Despite what Nrvnqsr Chaos said, he still needed to figure out how to live from now on. He decided to take a shower first, then go to a hospital in Tokyo for a full check-up.
After showering and changing into outdoor clothes, he put his mitome-in (the most commonly used personal seal in Japan for simple contracts and signing for mail) and his birth certificate into a small bag. He then stepped out of his house into the gentle sunlight.
Being a foreign immigrant, especially from the mainland, life in this country still came with many inconveniences.
Although his lifestyle was no different from that of a Japanese citizen, interacting with public facilities or officials often attracted unnecessary attention.
In this era, Japan's transportation network was already highly developed. Getting around was convenient, with not only an efficient air travel system but also an extensive network of highways and railways.
