Ava knew breakfast was going to be awkward the moment she stepped into the dining room. She just hadn't expected it to be this bad.
Damian was already seated at the table. He had changed into a dark suit, his hair neatly arranged, his expression composed as always. Anyone looking at him from a distance would never guess that only a short while ago he had been sitting on the edge of a bed, kissing his wife good morning.
Ava stopped briefly at the doorway. Their eyes met and immediately, she remembered the kiss, his hand against her cheek and the quiet way he had looked at her afterward.
Her cheeks became warm. Damian's gaze remained on her for a second longer before he looked away.
"Good morning," he said for the third time that morning.
Ava swallowed.
"Good morning."
She walked toward the table and took the seat across from him.
Charles and the other staff moved quietly around them, placing breakfast on the table.
