A somewhat distant memory never seemed to have left. I could still remember faint events of my childhood back then. You could say I was from a wealthy family. We lived in a big house, but I never remembered how big it was. We were living quite a comfortable life. Dad was never home, and anytime I asked either my big sister or mom, their responses were always the same.
"He will be back."
That was all, and I never bothered questioning it. I was simply happy with the life I was living, but I never felt satisfied, and I never knew or understood why. I never really had friends in school. For some odd reason, I had always perceived myself as different. Deep within me, I was scared of what were to happen to me.
The fear of abandonment, the feeling of not understanding or being understood, the fear of loneliness. I was never interested in the supernaturals. I never sought any form of truth because I simply lived the way I thought would make me happy. But my perception of reality changed when I met that old man.
I mean, he simply disappeared.
The enemy was right before me, a supernatural which had taken complete control of Kou's body. Its presence was intense, and despite being in a body like Kou's, it managed to push both Yumiko and I this far.
If he were to completely merge with Kou, we might lose him, and I'm sure he has a family waiting for him. Such a fate shouldn't befall someone like him. To do that, I will use my powers.
A surge of shock ran through my body, but later it felt warm. His negative energy flowed pretty well in my body.
My eyes were stuck on the supernatural, and it was clear he was being wary of me as well.
I slapped the side of my head with the palm of my right hand, and that action seemed to have made the supernatural somewhat confused.
"For what purpose is that?"
"Just a bad habit of mine," I replied, my tone dim.
That action helped me concentrate. I took in a deep breath and let it out.
Then let's begin.
Whoosh.
Right before the supernatural's eyes, my speed had gone up, and in a quick burst I was already close enough to land my first attack. I threw my arm backwards with the momentum I had built up and threw my fist at Kou's face.
My fist barely made contact before the supernatural tilted Kou's head enough to dodge my punch.
"How did—"
Right before the supernatural could ask any further questions, I used my powers. Tapping into my psychic power, a powerful force seemingly slammed right into Kou's body and sent him flying. The force threw him multiple feet into the sky. During that moment, I crouched, ready for a jump, and in a burst of wind leaped from the ground. The floor cracked from the sheer force as I charged right at the supernatural.
He retorted with Kou's body and tried to throw a punch at me, but it was blocked as I summoned a barrier instantly, and that was enough to catch the supernatural off guard.
Although I had never been the type to use my powers too reliably, especially in combat, I had made sure to practice. I could see supernaturals, sense them, and engage with them, so at one point I started to wonder, what if I ended up in a situation where I had to fight against one, seeking to survive?
Or maybe psychic power is simply that strong.
I never thought about what my face looked like. Although Kou's expression was a slight frown, I could sense it.
Fear.
I thrust my right arm at Kou's face, grabbing it tightly. At the speed we both moved, it exceeded anything we'd been through. At near hypersonic speed, I blew past the town, debris flying as I crashed Kou's body into anything right in front of me until I slammed his whole body into a nearby brick wall fence.
A massive hole was created, but I firmly held onto Kou's head.
But right then and there, a tiny surge of negative energy filled the air, and the car which happened to be right beside me exploded. Using that opportunity, the supernatural slipped away from my grasp and took a few meters of distance from me.
"I see," he said, cracking the base of Kou's neck with an arrogant stare. "You used telekinesis to boost your momentum, hence why you're capable of making such quick short bursts. I had no idea psychics could do that."
I simply stared in silence as the flames covered my barrier. In my eyes, that car looked perfectly fine, yet it exploded. How? If his ability is manifesting bad luck, it would be safe to assume whatever happens around my surroundings is simply unquestionable.
Abilities that defy logic. Such a disadvantage I've placed myself in, and yet…
Why do I look so excited?
I charged right at the supernatural, utilizing my telekinesis to boost my momentum. I got him within my range, but something felt odd.
I wasn't meant to take a leap this early. My timing had been altered somehow.
Such a mistake gave the supernatural the advantage he needed. He went on his knees, dodging my punch, and threw a jab to my stomach.
I spat saliva from the sheer force and was sent flying into the air. The supernatural wasted no time and charged right at me, landing a kick perfectly to my side, sending me flying right back to the road.
But right as I braced for a brutal landing, Kou's body was already there. He threw his fist back, ready to make a decisive blow.
Right before his blow made contact, I was nowhere to be found. Instead, connecting with his fist was a trash can.
Slow but convincing, the supernatural looked right behind him, and I was right there, my palm stretched toward him.
My footing faltered, and my balance was altered.
"Telekinesis won't work now!" the supernatural grinned.
My palm began to ignite, and right before he could react, a burst of flames imploded in space.
Kou's body was covered in imploding flames.
The shockwave was powerful enough to be felt around the area, but I wasn't saved. I fell right to the ground due to losing my balance earlier.
As the smoke faded, Kou's body became visible. His skin was covered with burnt marks, his muscles visible. It was a gory sight, but yet the supernatural never reacted, only stared at me with a frown.
"I didn't think you would be willing to go through such lengths. Don't tell me you're enjoying this?"
"You're a psychic, right? Psychics technically don't exist anymore after the Holy Theory, so seeing you is quite comforting," the supernatural laughed. "I can see it, your future. Your life is going to be filled with nothing but misery, and it's your fault for simply existing. Do you understand how much of a threat you are to supernaturals?"
He pointed Kou's burnt off finger at me. "He will come for you. Order."
"Order?"
"Humans are the embodiment of ideologies. Supernaturals are the embodiment of realism, culture, lifestyle, love, and pain."
"Pretty cocky thing to say after starting a war with humans a long time ago."
"It was the only viable solution. We humans and supernaturals simply can never coexist."
I clicked my tongue. A pang of disappointment covered my face upon remembering what Yumiko's dream was. It sounded impossible, but maybe someone like Yumiko could pull it off.
"All I wish to do is to find the truth, the reason behind everything, the truth behind my powers!" I got up on my two feet.
"Truth? There's nothing known as the truth. The reason for cause and effect varies, do you know? History has been altered, manipulated, and not to mention, why should a brat like you know? Don't tell me you think you're worth telling? What do you think you wish to accomplish knowing the truth?"
I clenched my fists tightly.
"You wanna know what he will do? Isn't that obvious!" a voice echoed through the empty streets.
I scouted the voice and laid eyes on the owner, standing on the rooftop right beside us.
"Yumiko?"
"Once he learns this truth of his, we will change it!" Yumiko roared with a confident grin.
"Change it? This guy? Don't make me laugh. He doesn't suit being a hero. I'm pretty sure he only cares about himself."
"You underestimate Yuu! The Yuu I know wanted to save the world!"
The Yuu you knew? What exactly did she mean by wanted?
"How stupid. Do you think a guy like him can understand the truth? Understand supernaturals? Does he even understand himself?"
As the supernatural spoke, his negative energy increased. His presence grew larger.
"If such a brat wishes to change the world, I will stop him!" The supernatural clasped Kou's hands together.
A dark aura covered Kou's body.
"Welcome to my world."
Before any of us could react, the area was instantly covered with negative energy, creating some sort of barrier. There were no signs of escape, and the area looked completely fine.
"It seems we have a real threat on our hands."
I looked over my shoulder and laid eyes on Yumiko, who was right behind me.
"I didn't mean to drag you into this."
I clenched my fists even tighter.
"He created a separate space where his negative energy has successfully spread around the area. In other words, his bad luck ability is more potent and dangerous than ever before."
"I see."
But it doesn't seem like he's taken control over Kou's body fully. I could see it. Kou's soul was still trying to fight back.
I took in deep breaths and gently slapped the side of my head.
"No, Yumiko. It's fine. I chose to involve myself. You did nothing wrong. Despite wanting to find the truth, I indirectly kept running from it. Not being able to show this supernatural how far I've come and how far I will go puts a mockery on my name, and the old man's, of course."
I grinned and pointed at myself with my thumb. "Who do you think I am? Just because I couldn't come up with an answer for you now doesn't mean I won't later on."
"Excuses. Nothing but excuses!" The supernatural had reached an all time high of rage.
"Then I will show you! You're about to witness the change of Yuu!"
