Chapter 7 - Chapter 686: Suspect Eliminated

Carter sat dejected. She had cooperated well with two detectives and arrived at the station, only to be informed that her husband had died at the hands of another Mrs. Carter.

Through the one-way glass, three men in the observation room on the other side stared at each other in surprise.

"How did this guy do it?" After all, reasoning was reasoning. Even with the confirmation that Kevin Carter was a bigamist, and the fact that their two families lived so close together, Danny still expressed a shock.

Crucially, the two Mrs. Carters, despite a five or six year age difference, one brunette and the other blonde, were both incredibly beautiful.

"Kevin Carter's parents died young, and his only brother died in a car accident in Seattle ten years ago. He created a second identity using his own name and his brother's Social Security number."

Jack shook his head and sighed. The fragmented state of the American state was truly baffling. Once a fake identity crossed state lines, it was incredibly difficult to verify.

Mike Taylor also stated that while he'd experienced many bizarre cases, this was his first time witnessing something so bizarre, truly eye-opening.

"Marrying two women who lived in the same neighborhood is incredibly hard to believe. How likely do you think these two Mrs. Carters didn't know each other?"

Danny was already impatient. "Just ask. I bet she'll demand a lawyer in ten minutes and refuse to provide her DNA."

"Although they say the more beautiful a woman is, the more deceptive she is, but I tend to believe she's innocent. Zoya Carter doesn't show much evidence of training. She doesn't look like a serial killer.

At least from the case files that have been sent in, some of her methods require a certain level of force. And her reaction upon learning the cause of her husband's death is something no one could replicate."

However, Jack's words clearly failed to convince Danny. He gestured with a bottle of mineral water and a glass. "At least she has a motive, right?"

This was a trick detectives used: even if a suspect refused to provide DNA, the glass they drank from at the police station could still be used to extract DNA and fingerprints.

Leaving Mike Taylor in the observation room, Jack and Danny pushed open the door and entered the interrogation room.

"Mrs. Carter, I'm sorry to have kept you waiting." Jack poured a glass of water naturally and pushed it towards her.

"It's okay. I just needed a moment to calm down." Zoya Carter looked up, took a deep breath, wiped the tears from her eyes, reached for the glass, and drank it all in one gulp.

"I can't believe this. He was married to another woman. He's dead. God forgive me. I don't even know if I should be sad."

"Even if you're angry about this, it's natural. As a victim, no one will blame you for it." Jack sat down beside her and gave her a warm smile.

Danny stood on the other side of the table, pacing back and forth to create psychological pressure. Some young and handsome guy had taken the role of good cop, so naturally he had to play the role of bad cop.

"You've never noticed anything unusual?"

Danny's words made Zoya Carter laugh to herself. "Kevin said he has a lot of import and export business, so he needs to travel frequently. Ha, at least that's what he told me."

She continued, "Shortly after we got engaged, I qualified as a lawyer and got an offer from a large law firm. You know, I want to work 16 hours a day, so we're both away from home a lot."

Jack glanced at the information in his hand. This made sense. It's not surprising that a trainee lawyer would be exploited to such an extent.

He took out the evidence photo of the ring and showed it to the other party. "Did you give this ring to Kevin?"

The woman covered her face with her hands and nodded sadly. "Last night was our first wedding anniversary, and I prepared his favorite dinner."

"Steak, asparagus, corn, and salad?" Danny curled his lips secretly. Although his wife Linda was a traditional wife and cared deeply for him, Kevin Carter still made him very unhappy. He swore that this was not out of jealousy, but outright disgust!

"Yes, how did you know?" Zoya Carter was a little surprised.

Jack and Danny exchanged a glance, but didn't answer the question. After all, she was a family member, and topics like autopsies could easily irritate each other.

Danny changed the subject and continued, "Since yesterday was your wedding anniversary, and he left in a hurry after dinner, didn't you have any complaints? Did you go out after that?"

"No, I cleaned up the dishes and read the case files until midnight. Oh my God, am I so stupid? He mentioned before that he had to catch a red-eye flight to San Francisco to meet a very important client. I also had a lot of work to do, so I didn't complain much."

Seeing that Zoya Carter was a little agitated, Jack began to comfort her, "It's not your fault. Trust is the foundation of a relationship between husband and wife. He just took advantage of it."

Danny pushed over another photo. It showed a black-haired woman who looked slightly more mature than Zoya Carter. If you look closely, you will find that their temperaments are actually somewhat similar.

Zoya Carter stared at the photo, lost in thought, for a moment before asking, "Is that her? His other wife? Did she kill him?"

Noticing she'd been referring to Kevin Carter as simply "he," Jack nodded. "Yes, have you met her? Her name is Deborah."

"No," Zoya Carter's eyes welled up again, and she shook her head.

"Have you been to her apartment? It's in the building next to yours," Danny pressed.

"Of course not!" the woman sounded surprised, as if she didn't understand why he was asking.

"Mrs. Carter," Danny said, but she was interrupted. "Please, just call me Zoya. I... I don't know. Anyway, that name makes me feel very uncomfortable right now."

Danny amended his words. "Uh, Zoya, we need you to provide a DNA sample for testing."

"Why? I don't understand. Didn't you tell me she'd confessed?" Zoya Carter was puzzled.

"Well, here's the thing. We suspect there was a third person at the scene. If that person isn't you, DNA will prove it." Jack coughed lightly and glanced at Danny, who was also waiting for his answer.

"I thought I had a perfect man, a perfect life. I don't know what to do in the future, how to get through this. He was everything to me. I'm so glad she killed him, otherwise I would have done it myself."

After providing oral epithelial cells for DNA samples, Zoya Carter said this to the two of them before leaving the police station in tears.

"Do you think it's still necessary to have someone follow her and monitor her?" Jack asked Danny.

"Probably not! If she really is the female serial killer, her acting skills would be Oscar-worthy." Danny admitted that he had lost the bet again. "Anyway, please don't order something as expensive as lobster for supper tonight, okay?"

"Forget it, just go get some coffee that's not too bad, and I'll take care of the food." Jack shrugged. Overtime was definitely going to happen. Over twenty pieces of evidence and documents were already on their way, and tonight was destined to be a sleepless night.
