Chapter 149: Basic Incantations
Li Yao stepped forward and gently reached out to touch the barrier at the entrance to the chamber, careful not to force his way in.
"There's resistance… but not much."
With a bit of strength, he could probably push through.
But doing so might trigger something — and he wasn't willing to take that risk.
Traps set by the Uzumaki Clan weren't to be taken lightly.
If it turned out to be a death-triggering seal like Danzo's Four Symbols Seal, Li Yao didn't think he could escape in time.
"Let's give it a try."
Li Yao immediately sensed the chakra nature of the barrier and replicated it exactly — a faint golden hue of barrier-type chakra.
"This is it. Let's see if it works."
He covered his entire body with the replicated golden barrier chakra.
"Oh, it worked!"
A faint smile crept across his face. Once his body was coated in the same chakra, the resistance at the barrier vanished entirely.
"So these static barriers are different from active ones — as long as you match the chakra type, you can pass through safely without triggering any traps."
Li Yao walked in naturally, gaining a new understanding of barrier techniques.
"Wonderful, Lord Li Yao is definitely one of us!"
Because she couldn't sense the chakra Li Yao had cloaked himself in, Kushi only saw him pass through the Uzumaki Clan's unique barrier with ease. A massive weight lifted from her heart.
She had only just realized that the chamber was protected by a special bloodline-based barrier exclusive to the Uzumaki Clan.
That Li Yao could pass meant he must share their blood.
With that confirmation, she didn't need to question her resolve anymore.
"Uncle! I've seen this before. It's what you were looking for — basic sealing technique knowledge. It explains the origins of many beginner-level fūinjutsu!"
Yuzu excitedly ran over with a scroll about the length of a forearm. Li Yao's eyes lit up as he took it and immediately sat down to read.
The moment he opened it, he became absorbed in the sea of sealing technique knowledge.
Seeing his total concentration, Kushi signaled her daughter not to disturb him.
The two began retrieving and organizing the scrolls lining the walls.
They had seen Li Yao's black water space before and knew it worked like a storage scroll. He could easily pack up everything inside.
The room wasn't very large. Though the scrolls were numerous, they were limited. In no time, the mother and daughter had collected and organized all of them.
Meanwhile, Li Yao's face was lit with astonishment, excitement, and deep thought — fully immersed in the foundational theories.
"So that's how it works!"
"The black markings in sealing techniques are called incantations, and these basic incantations are actually manifestations of the laws of nature!"
He was amazed. This beginner's guide had opened the door to a whole new world. It finally unveiled the mystery behind sealing techniques.
Those black script-like lines in fūinjutsu were not created arbitrarily — they were incantations.
These incantations were not manmade. They were derived from natural energy, then given form through yin-yang chakra. That's how incantations were born.
All sealing techniques were developed from a wide variety of basic incantations extracted from nature.
Very few ninja could sense natural energy.
In contrast, the three great sage lands' summoning creatures were naturally adept at it — making them the original source of fūinjutsu knowledge.
"Then maybe… the Sage of Six Paths and his brother learned sealing from Mount Myōboku. That's how they developed Chibaku Tensei to seal Kaguya Ōtsutsuki, using it alongside the Rinnegan."
Li Yao silently speculated.
As he continued reading, he saw that the Uzumaki Clan greatly revered Mount Myōboku's sealing arts, especially those of the Toads — considered the strongest.
But even so, the Uzumaki were known as the strongest sealing experts in the shinobi world.
Their special physiology allowed them to sense natural energy more easily than any other clan.
Because of this, the few Uzumaki who could tap into natural energy used their yin-yang chakra to analyze and develop many new base incantations, creating countless powerful sealing techniques.
That's why the Uzumaki Clan was so far ahead in sealing arts.
And also… why their nation was destroyed.
So, how did these incantations extracted from nature become full-fledged sealing techniques?
According to the book, natural energy encompasses the entire world. Through yin-yang chakra — the principle of yin and yang giving birth to all things — certain incantations could be deciphered from nature.
When chakra is channeled into these incantations, they generate special types of energy that embody natural laws — things like heat, space, wind, or hardness. Almost like the natural "rules" found in cultivation worlds.
The essence of sealing techniques is to combine these special incantations in a specific sequence — much like forming hand seals — and, with personal intent, create a technique that embodies a particular law of nature.
It's not unlike how Kekkei Genkai work: combining fire and earth to create lava, or fire and water to create boil release.
When basic incantations are arranged in a stable circuit, and willpower is inserted, a complete sealing technique is born.
Take explosive tags, for example. Their incantations include fire, wind, and earth. When arranged correctly, they form a stable circuit.
At this point, it's like building a blender with all the parts assembled — but to get apple juice, you still need to toss in an apple.
To turn a basic incantation circuit into an explosive tag, you must include the character for "explode" — infusing it with the desired result.
Then, when chakra is added, the tag explodes — not burns, not blows wind.
Most fūinjutsu are made of a stable incantation circuit plus specific intent or symbols — either words like "seal," "water," "fire," or visual representations like spirals in the Eight Trigrams Seal.
Whether word or design doesn't matter — what matters is injecting the correct intent into the circuit so that the energy generated performs the right sealing effect.
At this point, Li Yao realized why he had failed to carve the Devouring Seal Array onto his body.
His incantation circuits were unstable.
So how could he stabilize them?
The easiest — yet hardest — way was by sensing natural energy. That would let him feel exactly where the circuit went wrong and make adjustments.
Easy in theory, hard in practice.
Because Li Yao couldn't sense natural energy.
Even among the Uzumaki, only one or two per generation had that ability — sometimes none at all.
Clearly, those who could tap into natural energy were incredibly rare in the shinobi world.
So if he couldn't sense it, the only alternative was to study sealing theory — learn the properties of basic incantations and how they interacted.
Some incantations were opposites, some reinforced each other, and some only amplified specific others.
