Chapter 16 – A Mother's Stern Hand

The royal chamber of the forest elves was colder than usual that night.

The wind seeped through the carved windows, making the crystal lamps flicker as if the very air wished to listen.

Valdyn stood in the center of the chamber, his back straight, his emerald eyes steady.

Before him sat Queen Serenea, high on her carved seat of leaves and roots. Her dark green robes draped across the floor, and her gaze—sharp, unyielding—pierced him.

"Valdyn," she began, her voice calm yet heavy. "You dared to take such a step."

Valdyn's breath was steady. "I only followed what the ancestors revealed to me."

The Queen rose from her seat. Every step she took was slow, graceful, yet heavy with authority. She stopped before him, her eyes cold.

"What do you know of the ancestors? What do you know of the blood you carry?" Her voice cut like a blade. "You are not just my son. You are the heir of the Thalorian line—the line foretold to bring forth the Elf Emperor."

---

Valdyn clenched his fists. "I know, Mother. And that is why I acted. Sylwen carries my child. That child will be the beginning of our people's return."

Serenea's hand struck his chest—not gentle, but firm.

"Beginning, you say? Do you grasp what responsibility you have shouldered? With one choice, you have bound yourself not just to Sylwen, but to the future of all our kind!"

Her voice filled the chamber, echoing through stone and wood.

"Do you understand how fragile we are? We are few—so few. Every child is a precious flame in the darkness. And you—" her eyes flashed with fierce fire, "—you must protect every flame that is born from you."

Valdyn inhaled deeply, then lowered his head slightly.

"I will protect them. With everything I have. With my life."

---

Queen Serenea paced around him, her footsteps soft, her presence suffocating.

"There is an old prophecy," she said, her tone quieter but sharper. "A vision that the elders have guarded since the Great War ended. It speaks of a golden-haired child who will raise the elves from ruin."

She stopped behind him. "I always believed it would come one day… but I did not think it would come this soon."

Valdyn straightened his back. "I never asked for prophecy. I only follow the path that has opened before me. The ancestors guide me."

Serenea closed her eyes, exhaling through her nose, then opened them again, glinting like polished silver.

"If that is true, then prove it. Do not only speak of revival—build it. With blood, with heirs, with strength."

---

Serenea returned to her seat, her tone calmer now, though still stern.

"Listen well, Valdyn. The survival of our people is no longer measured by swords or spells alone. What matters most now… is children. Heirs. The more that are born, the stronger we will become. Every child is another chance at survival."

Her eyes narrowed. "Do not think Sylwen is enough. You must look further. You are the heart of this bloodline. You are the seed of rebirth."

Valdyn held her gaze, unflinching. Deep within, the system's whispers echoed the same truth—but aloud, he only nodded.

"I understand. And I will not fail this people."

For a moment, silence hung between them. Then, slowly, the Queen allowed a faint smile to touch her lips. It was not the soft smile of a mother, but the thin, sharp recognition of a queen who had judged her heir worthy—if only for now.

---

The heavy silence was broken when the chamber doors opened. An elder entered, his expression tight. He bowed deeply to the Queen.

"Your Majesty… the council has convened."

Serenea turned, her voice calm. "What decision have they reached?"

The elder swallowed hard. "They believe Prince Valdyn must soon be wed to a noble elf of the forest. A political marriage… to strengthen the bloodline."

The chamber grew still.

The Queen's gaze sharpened once more as she turned to Valdyn.

"Do you hear that? Even the elders have begun to move. This is no longer just about you and Sylwen. This is about the destiny of our people."

Valdyn's fists tightened at his sides. The path before him was heavy, lined with trials. But he would not turn away.

---

Queen Serenea had rebuked him, then acknowledged him.

But now, the weight of politics pressed down.

The elders were already weaving their plans.
