Sour. The milk in Hob's pot had turned in the night, and Nissa drank it anyway, standing at the hearth-stone with the pot in both hands, because there was nothing else to drink it with and nothing else to drink.
There was no bread. The last heel had gone to Joss the evening before, and he'd eaten half and hidden the other half in his blanket, and she'd found it at first light and put it back and said nothing. The cows had given half what they gave a week ago. The heifer gave nothing; she wasn't old enough to give. Up in the loft there was enough of the old stack for two more days, if nothing ate it that didn't have to, and Bett had said that so many times now that nobody heard it.
