Clean, the last column on Wynn's line, from the top of the box to the bottom.
Thorne had the candle close and the book open on the table, and he read the line again the way he'd read it every morning for six days, though he could have said it without looking. Wynn Hartley. The Millford road. Out the twenty-first. Then the twenty-seventh, in the due column, in his own hand, small. Then nothing, where the day he came back would go.
Above it, the other line. Not returned, in the same hand, from the twentieth. He'd written that on the eighth day and not before, and he'd been right to wait and right to write it, and neither of those things had done anybody any good.
He pinched the candle out and took his coat off the peg.
