Location:The Millford road — the Halbrook holding; the stone barn; the door strip

Milk, warm from the cow, tasted of the barn.
Tamsin drank it standing by the hearth-stone with her shield leaning on her leg, and it tasted of hay and the cow's hide and a little of the cup, which had been Hob's and still had something of his pot about it, however often Nissa scoured it. She didn't mind. Two years and more of Corps rations, and she'd have drunk it out of her own boot.
"There's more," Nissa said.
"Give it to the boy."
"The boy's had his."
Joss was on his blanket by the west wall, his chin on Sedge's neck, watching the heifer. The heifer had got up off the strip at milking and gone to stand with the other cows at the north end, and now she was looking back down the length of the barn at the door with her ears forward, the way she did every dusk, as if she were thinking about it.
