Chapter 9 - Chapter Nine

~~ Ricardo's POV~~

Gray sunlight shot through the window across my office in sharp lines, but it could no longer brighten up the black pits swirling in my heart. I was sitting behind my monster mahogany desk, fingers lightly drumming against the surface, while my mind plotted. Anastasia. The very name had somehow become an obsession, a target, a challenge.

Every time the thoughts of her rise in my mind, her single act of defiance, the curve of her body, and the fragility in her eyes that she tried so hard to hide, I get a surge of desire haunted by freezing rage. It was no longer a case of revenge; somehow, in ways I never anticipated, it had grown into a personal matter.

I recalled the day my parents died, accompanied by the reconstructions of their death with methodological precision. To me, their dying moments were this picture that was simply not going away. My mother was firm in saying no, while my father kept pleading with her, with his eyes averted, hiding away that sting of guilt. From the other side of the wall, I had heard them, helplessly, as the fragile threads of our lives slowly unraveled in silence. He made me grow up thinking that it was his misdeed, her folly, and the errors of men like Ana's father that took everything from me, my parents and I can't forget that night.

The demise of my parents was no calamity, their demises were brought by untruths, falsehood, and backstabbing. And I had traced every thread to the one person I blamed.

Anastasia Texas.

She was the only daughter, the only living remnant of the man I believed was the cunning wolf that had finally deceived my mother and led to my parents' deaths. My obsession with her no longer concerned vengeance. It was gaining a shadowy tint. I wanted her to fall under my control.

I wanted to completely dominate her, tear her down, contradict her independence, undermine her pride, and shatter all her defenses so that the only thing left for her was to obey me. A perfect plan lay in my grasp for carrying this through—impeccably laid out, coldly calculated, and ruthlessly efficient.

But first, barriers had to be removed. First on the list was Aunt Jessica. She had been between me and my prey, protecting Anastasia in her own pathetic ways. She thought she was protecting the girl, but I would let her see her own weak grasp.

I gave her a call, asking to visit her home under the pretext of some business matter. She arrived looking suspiciously intrigued; I did not bother with any small talk.

"Aunt Jessica," I said calmly but with a slight edge to my voice, "we need to talk about your husband."

Her brow immediately furrowed, and suspicion flashed in her eyes. "What about him?" she asked cautiously, as if she could already sense the storm approaching.

"I have done some research," I said, leaning slightly forward and meeting her gaze, "and, apparently, your husband is very much in debt, not with petty debts, but with debts arising from criminal activities-gambling, loans from unsavory sources, attempts to disguise illegal transactions." I paused, so the weight of it would sink in.

Pale, a slight twitch at her lips betrayed her panic. "I... I don't know what you mean," she stammered, but her eyes gave away the truth. She knew I had found every detail, every weakness, every secret she and her husband thought was buried.

"I mean exactly what I say," I said, my voice soft, yet cold and deliberately measured. "If Anastasia does not comply; if she refuses me, refuses to honor the agreement I will offer her, your family—your husband, yourself—will lose everything. I can make these debts impossible to pay. I can make the legal consequences inevitable. In an instant, in a snap of a finger, everything you treasure-release, will disappear!"

And then came the instant and palpable fear. She let herself sink into a chair, her hands clasped tightly together as though holding herself down to earth. I let her shaking sit by itself for a moment before I dropped my words, allowing for their weight to fully smear the heavy air above us. "You've tried to protect her, haven't you? Yet, here she stands like a barrier between you and the life you want to preserve. Your protection will be very costly should she decide not to cooperate."

Tears welled up at the corners of her eyes. "You wouldn't—" she started to say, but I stopped her with gently pitying words.

"I would," I said simply. "I have no reason to lie; I have no reason to exaggerate. Either you keep her in line or else watch everything that you have constructed and everything that you hoped to preserve get shattered right in front of you. And once that has happened, there's no going back."

The rhythm of her breath became quick and uneven, and I beheld her loss as her loyalty shifted like sand. "Anastasia must..." she started, her voice trembling.

"Yes," said I, a slow, satisfying smile growing on my face. "She must comply, she must obey, and you will help me. Every second she resists is another second that puts your life, your home, your very freedom in jeopardy. I trust you realize the stakes."

She gave a shaky nod, and that little bit of loyalty she had felt toward her niece was now corrupted by fear and thus diverted toward me. "I… I will see to it she obeys your orders," she whispered in a trembling voice.

"Good," I said with a smile, leaning back in my chair as the glory of victory washed over me. "Because resistance... is futile."

The murderous thrill running through my veins as I left Jessica in a state of utter panic and obedience was tremendous. Every move, every touch, every threat had been carefully executed to completely corner Anastasia and anyone who might stand to protect her. And now that Anastasia's aunt was on my side, although against her will, my plan could be realized.

Later that evening, I was back in the city, my mind entirely on the girl I intended to break. I thought of her reaction to my initial touches, a body-shaking response of terror and disgust that seemed to betray any intent the mind might have had to resist. It sparked a pulse of dark desire through me. There were no romantic gestures here, and no love.

This was about control, domination, and the deliberate shaping of someone for my obedience. Anastasia Texas will bend, and she will bend all the way.!

Plotting all of it, I mentally mapped every step. No gaps, no room for her to wriggle free. I would abuse her mind and body and abuse her social relations. I would taint every corner of her life with fear. Every circumstance that led to her isolation, every whisper of alarm from my voice, every time my hand grazed hers, every time I forced those eyes up towards mine—those would be bricks in the cage I was constructing.

Yet... as I was thinking of my next moves, there flickered an emotion that I had not yet reckoned with, obsession. Not merely the thirst for vengeance but for her—the way in which her eyes would betray her terror, the tremors of her hands, and those little sparks of defiance that made her ever so intoxicating. I would not allow myself to be caught in it, but it was there all the same, lurking below the calculated plan. Desire and control had come crashing down together, and I welcomed that.

I was at Emily's subdivision by evening, invisible yet inescapable. Lucas followed me in silence, as was his habit. He was more than her protector; he was the shadow that enabled me to take another step into her world without fear. I had studied her habits, her blind spots, her vulnerabilities. Tonight, I would test her defenses once more. Tonight, I would remind her that every breath she took, every decision she made, was mine, unless the price was to be paid by her and all that she cared for.

I rapped once on the door of Emily, carefully, deliberately. When she opened it, her eyes widened at recognition and fear—although she tried to hide it. "Anastasia," I said, voice low, commanding. "It's time."

The minute she stepped into the room, I could see the fear etched into her face, the trembling hands, the trembling jaw. Good. Fear was a tool, and I employed it with precision.

"You see, don't you?" I whispered, moving in close enough that our faces were inches from each other. "Everything that has been told to you today—the debts, the threats, your aunt's involvement—was no mere warning. It is your world. Listen to me, or all that matters to you will be gone. Do you understand?"

Her lips parted, her eyes were wide, but never a word was spoken. She could not say much for fear of overtaking them.

"Good," I said, black satisfaction knotting in my chest. "Because the sooner you can learn to accept your role, the less it'll hurt. And trust me…. resistance is merely postponement. Eventually, you'll submit."

Continuing to talk, I watched her body react automatically. The trembling of her hands, the thudding pulse in her neck, the shallow breaths. Each was evidence of the influence I already exerted over her. And each stoked the obsession that had grown to possess me—the obsession to see her completely, absolutely under my control, aware of her helplessness, aware that escape was out of the question.

I could already picture the mental ticking clock, the internal struggle she would suffer over the hours, days, weeks. And I'd be standing there, goading her, nudging, touching, cornering, and executing every move and choice to bend her to my command. It was not ruthlessness for the sake of ruthlessness—it was choreographed domination, a recouping of that stolen from me years ago. Her father's lying, her mother's abandonment, her own existence had reduced her to this. And now, she'd be paying back in the currency of submission.

I left Emily's apartment with Lucas behind me, contentment surrounding my chest. Step number one was done. Aunt Jessica was in place to my desire, Anastasia was cornered, and the plan was moving forward with exactness. Fear was my instrument, lust was my motivation, and control was my eventual goal.

Anastasia Texas would soon find out that she could never elude me. And when the moment came, she would understand why. Everything in her world, every individual, every breath, every notion would belong to me. And she would obey.
