Chapter 61 - Chapter 61 – March Toward Blackspire

The forest that surrounded the cavern was eerily silent. No chirping of birds, no rustling of wildlife—only the occasional groan of the earth, as if the land itself mourned what had been awakened.

Rihan limped forward, every step weighed down by fatigue. Elira walked close, steadying him with a hand on his arm. Kael took the lead, blade still unsheathed, scanning every shadow. Mira, unusually quiet, kept to the rear, her feline ears twitching at the slightest sound.

Hours passed in tense silence. At last, the jagged peaks of the Blackspire Mountains came into view—dark stone spires jutting into the sky like the teeth of some colossal beast. Black mist clung to their slopes, curling and shifting as though alive.

Elira's lips parted in awe and fear. "That… is where the seals lie?"

Rihan's System responded before he could.

[DING!]

System Directive:

Blackspire Mountains contain three active Seals of Suppression.

Warning: Mistress' influence is growing. Corruption level—37% and rising.

His chest tightened. It's worse than I thought.

Kael stopped at the treeline, eyes fixed on the looming spires. "I've fought on battlefields soaked in blood, but I've never felt dread like this."

Mira's tail swished nervously. "It's not dread. It's hunger. Something inside those peaks… wants us."

The group exchanged uneasy glances. Even with their recent victory over the Herald, they all knew the truth—they had barely survived. And yet the path ahead promised greater danger.

Still, retreat was never an option.

"Blackspire is where we're going," Rihan said, his voice hoarse but firm. "If the Mistress wants these seals broken, then we'll make sure we get there first."

Elira looked at him with worry. "But in your condition—"

"I'll manage," he interrupted, more harshly than intended. After a moment, he softened. "I have to."

---

As they advanced into the foothills, the landscape grew hostile. Trees twisted unnaturally, their bark blackened, sap oozing like blood. The ground itself seemed to resist their steps, roots curling across the path like grasping hands.

Kael struck one of the roots aside with his blade. The wood screamed as though alive before crumbling to ash. He frowned. "This corruption… it's spreading faster than we imagined."

Mira crouched low, claws unsheathing as she sniffed the air. "Not just corruption. Something's tracking us."

A low growl answered her words. From the mist ahead, figures emerged—twisted beasts, once wolves, now warped with jagged bone protrusions and glowing red eyes. Their breaths came out as black vapor, bodies trembling with unstable energy.

"Corrupted Guardians," Rihan muttered, recognition flashing in his eyes. The System confirmed it:

[DING!]

Enemy Detected: Corrupted Wolfspawn (x7).

Threat Level: Moderate.

Kael smirked grimly. "Finally. Something to cut through."

The beasts charged.

Kael met them head-on, blade flashing in arcs of steel, each swing precise and deadly. Mira darted into their flanks, her movements blurring with feline agility, claws tearing into corrupted flesh. Elira stood firm at Rihan's side, chanting incantations, light bolts bursting from her palms to weaken their advance.

Rihan, still weakened, clenched his fist. The Soul Link Strike had drained him nearly dry, but the System surged faintly at his call. He raised his palm, threads of pale-blue energy weaving together.

"Pulse Break!"

The attack erupted, a shockwave of raw force tearing through two wolves at once. Their corrupted forms shattered into mist. But the strain nearly buckled him—he staggered, coughing blood.

"Rihan!" Elira cried, but he waved her off.

"Focus!" he barked, even as pain shot through his veins.

The battle was short but brutal. With Kael's ruthless precision, Mira's feral speed, Elira's steady support, and Rihan's unstable power, the guardians were slain one by one. Black ash coated the ground, seeping into the soil like poison.

When the last wolf fell, silence returned. Only the faint howl of the wind through the peaks remained.

Kael wiped his blade, gaze hard. "If that was just the mountain's welcome, I don't want to see the deeper levels."

Mira licked blood from her claw, tail twitching. "Deeper is where the real answers lie."

Elira turned to Rihan, who leaned heavily against a boulder, sweat dripping down his temple. "You're pushing yourself too far," she whispered.

He met her gaze, exhaustion and determination burning together in his eyes. "If I don't… none of us make it."

Before she could argue, the ground trembled again. But this was no distant quake.

From the mist deeper within the mountains, a colossal shadow stirred.

The group froze as glowing eyes—each the size of a human head—opened in the darkness.

The System's voice rang in Rihan's mind, sharper, louder than ever.

[DING!]

Warning! Mid-Boss Detected: Corrupted Titan-Beast.

Threat Level: Catastrophic.

The mountain roared.

And their true trial began.
