Chapter 45 - Chapter 45 – Shadows in the Firelight

The night was quiet, save for the crackling of the small fire. The group had only just sealed their oath when the air shifted—unnaturally still, like the world itself was holding its breath.

Elira's hand twitched toward her daggers. "Something's wrong."

Before Rihan could respond, the fire sputtered. Shadows lengthened unnaturally across the broken courtyard, slithering like living serpents. From the darkness stepped figures cloaked in black, their masks gleaming faintly under the moon.

"Assassins," Kael growled, hefting his axe. "Cowards in the night."

Sirena's staff flared with holy light, pushing back some of the creeping darkness. But for every tendril she dispelled, another grew. These were not ordinary killers—their aura reeked of corruption, their blades humming with void energy.

The Mistress's voice echoed faintly, though her form did not appear. "Show me… if your fragile bond can withstand death's embrace."

---

The First Clash

The assassins struck with perfect precision, moving like shadows unbound by flesh. Blades flashed toward Rihan's throat, while another lunged for Sirena. Elira intercepted with blinding speed, steel ringing as her daggers caught the assassin's curved blade.

"Stay close!" she shouted.

Rihan felt the urge to charge forward, but Sirena's warning held him back. "No—remember the Link!"

The threads of light flickered into existence as he centered himself. For a moment, Kael's strength surged into him, making his sword feel like a giant's weapon. He swung, and the first assassin was thrown back, armor cracking under the force.

Kael roared with laughter. "Ha! That's more like it!"

But their enemies did not falter. More shadows slipped from the ruins—dozens now, surrounding them.

---

Trial of the Link

The four instinctively fell into a circle, back to back, golden threads shimmering faintly between them. Their energies surged and ebbed with each strike, the Link weaving their intent together.

Elira struck low, her blades moving faster than her own reflexes as Rihan's focus sharpened her strikes. Kael's axe carried impossible speed as Elira's agility coursed through him. Sirena's healing pulses resonated instantly, patching wounds before they could slow anyone down.

For a moment, they were flawless—four souls fighting as one.

But the assassins adapted. Two of them split their shadows into duplicates, surrounding Sirena. The Link wavered as panic rippled through her.

"Hold steady!" Rihan shouted, rushing to cover her. But in his haste, the thread to Elira thinned. Her strike faltered, and an assassin's blade nicked her side.

Blood spattered the stone. The Link flickered violently.

Sirena clenched her staff, forcing her fear down. "No… not again. Not this time!"

She poured her will into the bond, anchoring it with pure resolve. The golden web stabilized, brighter than before, and a wave of light erupted outward, searing the shadows back.

The assassins recoiled, hissing.

The Turning Point

"NOW!" Rihan roared.

With the Link steady, the group moved as if choreographed by fate.

Kael swung wide, his axe tearing through multiple enemies at once, fueled by Elira's precision guiding his aim.

Elira weaved between them, her blades striking with Kael's raw power behind each stab.

Rihan's sword blazed with combined strength, his strikes carrying the weight of all three allies at once.

Sirena's staff pulsed with waves of radiant energy, each burst timed perfectly with their movements, staggering enemies at critical moments.

The assassins, once overwhelming, now struggled to withstand their unity. One by one, they fell, their shadows dissipating like smoke in the wind.

---

The Last Assassin

Only one remained, taller than the rest, his mask marked with crimson streaks. Unlike the others, he did not falter. His aura flared like a void flame, and he spoke for the first time.

"The Mistress sees promise in you. That is why I will end it now."

He vanished.

Rihan barely had time to react before the assassin reappeared behind Sirena, blade arcing for her throat. The golden thread between them snapped tight.

Without thinking, Rihan moved. Elira moved. Kael moved.

Three weapons struck at once—sword, dagger, and axe—all guided by the Link. Their combined strike cleaved through the assassin's void cloak, shattering his blade and sending him sprawling.

The masked figure staggered, blood staining his robes. Yet even as he collapsed, he laughed.

"You grow stronger… good. The Herald will enjoy crushing you all the more."

His body dissolved into black ash, carried away by the wind.

---

Aftermath

Silence fell once more, broken only by the warriors' ragged breathing. The golden web faded slowly, leaving them drained but alive.

Elira wiped her blade clean, her expression hard. "That wasn't just a random attack. That was a test."

Sirena's voice trembled slightly. "If… if that was just the Mistress's servants…" She trailed off, fear clear in her eyes.

Kael slammed his axe into the ground, defiant. "Then let her send more. Every fight makes us stronger."

Rihan looked out into the night, his grip tightening on his sword. He didn't speak, but his thoughts were clear: If this is only the beginning, how many will fall before we reach the end?

And in the ruins above, the Mistress's voice lingered once more—soft, amused, and hungry.

"Yes… show me your light, little heroes. Burn brightly… before you are snuffed out."
