Chapter 63 - Peace Triedy

After a while, Nate finally called Serafall.

A magic circle appeared in the living room.

Pink sparkles.

Heart effects.

Far more dramatic than necessary.

Then Serafall Leviathan stepped out in full magical girl attire, wand and all.

Which wasn't unusual.

Because when it came to Nate, Serafall showed up as "Levia-tan" first and a Satan second.

The moment she saw him, her face lit up.

"You called me, Nate-kun☆!"

Nate pointed at her immediately.

"So, you called me."

Serafall nodded happily.

"Tehe~ Yup☆"

Nate threw his hands up.

"Then why didn't you say it was an emergency involving dimensional travel!?"

The room froze.

Serafall blinked.

Once.

Twice.

"...Dimensional travel?"

She looked genuinely confused.

Then she pointed at herself.

"I called because I wanted to know if the Yokai Faction was okay with hosting the Three Factions peace conference."

Silence.

Nate blinked.

"You what?"

Serafall nodded.

"The peace agreement!"

"The Devils, Angels, and Fallen Angels finally want to formalize things with the Yokai."

"After the conflicts surrounding Kokabiel and the Excalibur incident, the leadership of the Three Factions decided to make a peace treaty and cooperation.

Serafall smiled proudly.

"And Yasaka-san's territory is neutral ground☆!"

Nate stared.

Then slowly pointed toward Wiz.

"Then explain that."

Serafall followed his finger.

Saw Wiz.

Paused.

Looked at Wiz.

Looked at Nate.

Looked at Wiz again.

Then smiled.

"Oh."

Another pause.

"Oh."

A third pause.

Then—

"I HAVE NO IDEA WHO THAT IS☆!"

Everyone fell over.

Hailey slammed her head into the table.

"WE CALLED THE SATAN FOR THIS!"

Kurumu pointed dramatically.

"YOU WERE OUR EXPERT!"

Serafall pointed at herself.

"I'M A FOREIGN AFFAIRS EXPERT!"

She pointed at Wiz.

"That's clearly an immigration problem!"

Wiz awkwardly raised her hand.

"Um... hello?"

Nate pinched the bridge of his nose.

Inside his head:

'Okay.'

'So Wiz randomly appeared.'

'Serafall isn't responsible.'

'The dimensional breach is unrelated.'

'Which somehow makes this worse.'

Serafall walked over and circled Wiz.

"Hmmm."

"Hmmmm."

"HMMMMM."

Then she stopped.

"Definitely not from Heaven."

She pointed at Wiz.

"Too undead."

Wiz flinched.

"That's fair."

Serafall pointed again.

"Definitely not a Devil."

"Correct."

"Definitely not Fallen."

"Also correct."

Serafall threw her hands into the air.

"Then she's from somewhere else☆!"

Nate stared at her.

"That was our first clue."

"Oh."

Meanwhile, Whisper was already writing.

Dimensional Visitor Incident #1

Nate immediately snatched the tablet.

"NO."

Whisper gasped.

"But history must be preserved!"

Nate looked toward the ceiling.

'Why does every calm day become a plot arc?'

Nate let out a long sigh.

At this point he had temporarily given up on understanding why Wiz had appeared.

That was a problem for Future Nate.

And Future Nate could suffer.

Present Nate had more immediate concerns.

He looked at Serafall.

"Okay."

"About the Three Factions thing."

Serafall straightened slightly.

The playful magical-girl act didn't disappear completely.

But she became noticeably more serious.

Nate folded his arms.

"They don't want the meeting here just because Kyoto is neutral ground."

It wasn't a question.

It was a statement.

"It's also because of what I'm currently doing, correct?"

The room grew quiet.

Serafall's smile became smaller.

"...Partly."

Nate nodded.

"Thought so."

Yasaka looked toward Serafall.

Neither woman seemed surprised by the question.

Serafall sighed.

"Nate-kun, you're not exactly subtle anymore."

Hailey immediately laughed.

"That's the understatement of the century."

Nate pointed at her.

"I am very subtle."

Everyone stared at him.

Nobody agreed.

Not a single person.

Even Wiz looked unconvinced.

Nate ignored this betrayal.

Serafall continued.

"The official reason is neutrality."

She held up one finger.

"Kyoto is one of the safest places in Japan for supernatural negotiations."

Second finger.

"Yasaka-san's faction is respected."

Third finger.

"The Yokai have relationships with almost every major supernatural group."

Then she pointed directly at Nate.

"And then there's you."

Nate immediately groaned.

"There it is."

Serafall nodded.

"There it is."

She sat down.

"The Three Factions have been watching what you've been doing."

Nate buried his face in his hands.

"That's never a sentence I want to hear."

"Too bad."

Serafall counted on her fingers.

"You trained Rias Gremory's peerage."

"You helped stabilize relations between multiple Yokai clans."

"You have connections to Hero Clans."

"You've become friends with various Devils."

"You've met Underworld royalty."

"You've somehow gotten involved with Spirits."

She paused.

"Apparently you're now talking to Vampire nobility too."

Nate immediately looked away.

Serafall narrowed her eyes.

"Nate-kun."

"Nate-kun?"

"Nate-kun, why are you looking away?"

Yasaka suddenly found her tea very interesting.

Lily coughed into her hand.

Kunou looked proud.

Serafall slowly looked around the room.

Then realization hit.

"Oh no."

She pointed at Nate.

"YOU DID IT AGAIN!"

"I DIDN'T DO ANYTHING!"

"YOU ACCIDENTALLY FORMED ANOTHER ALLIANCE!"

"IT WASN'T AN ALLIANCE!"

"THEN WHY ARE THE VAMPIRES INVOLVED?!"

"THAT'S A LONG STORY!"

"THAT'S NEVER A GOOD SIGN!"

After several seconds of shouting—

Serafall finally calmed down.

A little.

"Anyway."

She fixed her hair.

"The point is that the Three Factions don't just see Kyoto as neutral ground anymore."

Her gaze became serious.

"They see it as a place where cooperation actually works."

The room fell silent.

Because that was different.

Very different.

Nate understood immediately.

"They're using me as an example."

Serafall nodded.

"More or less."

"You work with Devils."

"You work with Yokai."

"You've cooperated with Hero Clans."

"You don't care what faction someone belongs to as long as they're not causing trouble."

She smiled.

"The leaders noticed."

Nate leaned back.

Thinking.

That was both flattering and terrifying.

Mostly terrifying.

Because it meant his actions were no longer just affecting Kyoto.

They were affecting the wider supernatural world.

And that was exactly the kind of thing the Black Wings would notice.

Somewhere far away—

Jorogumo suddenly sneezed.

"Why do I feel like the child has accidentally become a diplomatic incident again?" she muttered.

Back in the Adams Family house—

Nate looked at Serafall.

"Two weeks."

Serafall blinked.

"Two weeks before the meeting."

Nate folded his arms.

"If I'm hosting a gathering involving the Three Factions, Devils, Angels, Fallen, and every major supernatural power watching..."

He pointed at himself.

"...then I am not doing it halfway."

Yasaka smiled slightly.

She already knew where this was going.

Nate continued.

"I want one more Yokai Clan brought into the United Yokai Alliance before the conference begins."

Serafall stared for a moment.

Then smiled.

"That sounds nice."

Nate immediately pointed at her.

"The fact you think that's nice is concerning."

"Tehe~"

Nobody trusted that "Tehe~".

Several hours later.

In the Underworld.

A conference room.

The leadership of the Three Factions received Serafall's report.

Serafall smiled.

"Nate-kun agreed."

Three drinks were immediately spat out.

One by a Devil.

One by an Angel.

One by a Fallen Angel.

"HE AGREED?!"

"THAT FAST?!"

"WITHOUT AN INCIDENT?!"

Serafall tilted her head.

"Why is everyone surprised?"

The room looked at her.

Because this was Nate.

The Child of Prophecy.

The Yokai King.

The human-shaped butterfly effect.

The boy who accidentally turned every month into a world-changing event.

The fact he simply said "yes" was honestly suspicious.

Meanwhile.

The question of Wiz remained.

What exactly were they supposed to do with her?

Sending her back wasn't currently possible.

Nobody knew where she came from.

Nobody knew how she got here.

And nobody wanted to leave an interdimensional undead wandering around unsupervised.

Eventually a decision was reached.

Yokai Faction Science Division.

Wiz would work there temporarily.

The moment she arrived—

Everything changed.

At first everyone expected problems.

Wiz didn't even understand a smartphone.

She looked at modern technology like it was alien magic.

Which, from her perspective, it kind of was.

Thankfully—

Hakui Koyori volunteered to help.

Within days Koyori was teaching Wiz.

Computers.

Data systems.

Research databases.

Modern engineering.

Spiritual analysis equipment.

Everything.

At first Wiz struggled.

Then something happened.

She started understanding it.

Fast.

Very fast.

Concerningly fast.

One week later.

Koyori stared at a research paper.

Then at Wiz.

Then back at the paper.

"...How?"

Wiz tilted her head.

"How what?"

"You solved three theoretical problems."

"Oh."

Wiz smiled.

"I thought those were homework."

Silence.

Complete silence.

Nearby researchers slowly lowered their tablets.

One dropped a coffee.

Another quietly left the room.

A third started questioning his life choices.

Later.

Nate visited the Science Division.

He watched Wiz casually discuss magical energy theory with researchers who had spent decades studying it.

Then watched her improve one of their projects.

Then accidentally solve another problem.

Then propose three new ideas.

Nate blinked.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

'...Oh.'

Wiz wasn't just smart.

She was terrifyingly smart.

The problem was that nobody in her original world ever let her focus on this kind of work.

Half her time had been spent running a shop.

The other half had been spent dealing with Kazuma's nonsense.

Nate watched her explain a magical formula to an entire room of stunned researchers.

Then quietly thought:

'Konosuba and Kazuma held her back.'

A researcher raised a shaking hand.

"Miss Wiz?"

"Yes?"

"How long have you been studying magical theory?"

Wiz thought about it.

"Only a few decades."

Half the room screamed internally.

Nate slowly turned around.

"Nope."

He wasn't dealing with this.

The Science Division had created a monster.

And they had done it entirely by accident.

After the situation with Wiz had stabilized, Nate and Kunou moved on to a much more important matter.

The next clan.

If the Three Factions were coming to Kyoto in two weeks, then the United Yokai Alliance needed to be stronger than ever.

Not every clan was the same.

The Oni had respected strength.

The Kitsune had joined through trust and tradition.

The Yuki-Onna valued stability.

Other clans were more complicated.

Some were fractured.

Some were afraid.

Some wanted protection.

Others secretly wanted unity but had leaders too stubborn to admit it.

And some had hidden influences that would take months to remove.

So Nate and Kunou did what Yokai Kings and Queens had done for generations.

They consulted the wisdom of their predecessors.

Ancient memories.

Records.

Spiritual guidance.

Centuries of experience.

Hours later—

Both opened their eyes.

Kunou spoke first.

"The Ningyo."

Nate immediately answered.

"The Jorōgumo Clan."

They looked at each other.

Then immediately started debating.

"The Ningyo are already connected to modern society," Kunou argued.

"They have trade routes, coastal territories, and relationships with other aquatic Yokai."

Nate nodded.

"All true."

"But the Jorōgumo are influential."

"Very influential."

"They control information networks across parts of Yokai society."

Kunou frowned.

"Which is exactly why they're dangerous."

"Also true."

The discussion continued.

Pros.

Cons.

Risks.

Benefits.

Long-term consequences.

Eventually they reached the same conclusion.

The Ningyo were the better choice.

Less risk.

More stability.

And most importantly—

Mermother.

One of the most respected figures among aquatic Yokai.

If she supported the alliance, countless smaller groups would follow.

Nate nodded.

"Okay."

"Ningyo it is."

Then he froze.

His eyes widened.

"Oh no."

Kunou immediately looked concerned.

"What's wrong?"

Nate slowly turned toward her.

"Our homeroom teacher."

Kunou blinked.

"Nagasumi-sensei?"

Nate nodded.

"Yes."

Kunou stared.

Then realization hit.

Her ears immediately stood up.

"Oh no."

Nate pointed dramatically.

"He married a Ningyo."

Kunou immediately remembered.

"Not just a Ningyo."

"A member of one of the most important Ningyo families."

Both sat in silence.

Thinking.

Very hard.

Nate slowly lowered his face into his hands.

"Please tell me we don't have to negotiate with my teacher's in-laws."

Kunou thought about it.

Then remembered who those in-laws were.

Her eyes widened.

"No."

A pause.

Then—

"It's worse."

Nate looked up.

"How?"

Kunou answered immediately.

"We have to negotiate with your teacher's mother-in-law."

Silence.

Nate looked horrified.

Every supernatural being in Japan knew one thing.

Negotiating with powerful clan leaders was normal.

Negotiating with mothers-in-law?

Terrifying.

Even Yokai Kings feared that battlefield.

Nate slowly stood up.

"Nope."

"We're bringing Hailey."

Kunou blinked.

"Why Hailey?"

Nate answered without hesitation.

"Because if things go wrong, she's the only one brave enough to argue back."

Somewhere else in Kyoto—

Hailey suddenly sneezed.

"...Why do I feel like somebody just volunteered me for something?" she muttered.

Once that was done everyone there plan

Lily raised an hand. "So, who did your teacher marry?"

Nate spoke. "Sun Seto, the one part of the Yakuza Family, who have influence in the clan".

Lily drank her tea. "Oh, Sunny".

The room went completely silent.

Nate stared at his mother.

Then blinked.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

"...What."

Lily calmly continued drinking her tea.

The same way someone might casually mention they knew a neighbor.

Not the way someone should reveal they knew a major figure connected to the clan they were about to negotiate with.

Nate pointed at her.

"You know Sun Seto?"

Lily nodded.

"Of course."

"Of course?"

"Yes."

Nate looked like he was about to develop a headache.

"Mom."

Lily looked up.

"Yes?"

"The way you said that concerns me."

Yasaka immediately started smiling.

Because she knew exactly what was happening.

Lily set down her cup.

"Son."

"I was the Seer before you."

Nate immediately groaned.

Here it comes.

Lily continued.

"I traveled all over Japan."

"I met clan leaders."

"I met future clan leaders."

"I met Yokai Kings."

"I met future Yokai Kings."

She pointed at herself.

"I had friends."

Nate pointed back.

"You say that like it's a shocking revelation."

"It apparently is."

Fair.

Lily leaned back.

"I never met the Ningyo Queen personally."

"But I did meet Sunny."

Kunou blinked.

"You call her Sunny?"

"Everyone called her Sunny."

Nate was beginning to suspect his mother had lived a much more chaotic life than she ever admitted.

"Mom."

"Yes?"

"Please tell me she wasn't one of your friends."

Lily smiled.

"Oh, she absolutely was."

Nate dropped his head onto the table.

"Of course."

Yasaka was now openly laughing.

Aaron looked amused.

Whisper had already started taking notes.

Ancient Seer Friendship Network Expanded.

Nate pointed at Whisper.

"Burn that."

Whisper ignored him.

Lily wasn't finished.

"We went to high school together."

The room paused.

Nate slowly looked up.

"You..."

"...went to high school together."

"Yes."

"The future influential Ningyo."

"Yes."

"The future Yokai Seer."

"Yes."

"The woman who became one of your summons."

Lily nodded.

"Also yes."

The room froze.

Kunou's ears shot upright.

Hailey nearly fell off her chair.

Even Wiz looked impressed.

Nate just stared.

"...She's one of your summons?"

Lily nodded.

"Technically."

"Technically?"

Lily shrugged.

"The contract is still active."

Nate's soul left his body for a moment.

"Mom."

"Yes?"

"Are you telling me."

Lily smiled.

"Yes."

"We can literally call her."

Silence.

Complete silence.

Then Nate slowly looked toward the ceiling.

"I spend days planning diplomacy."

He pointed at his mother.

"And you solve it with an old school friend."

Lily nodded.

"That's usually how politics works."

Aaron laughed.

Yasaka laughed.

Kunou laughed.

Even Hailey laughed.

Nate sat there in defeat.

Then another realization hit him.

His eyes widened.

"...Wait."

Everyone looked at him.

Nate pointed at Lily.

"If Sunny is your summon."

Lily nodded.

"And she went to school with you."

"Yes."

"And she's connected to the Ningyo Clan."

"Yes."

Nate's eye twitched.

"Mom."

"Yes?"

"How many important people are secretly in your contact list?"

Lily thought for a moment.

Then answered honestly.

"...A lot."

The room groaned in unison.

Because suddenly it became very clear where Nate got it from.
