Chapter 50 - Power Up

Nate was in the Yokai King form, or was renamed by Hailey Golden King

He stood there, and everyone counted.

15 seconds later Nate transformed back. "See, it's not me, it's my limit".

Yasaka looked at him. "For now, because in that form, you jump from ZZ to UZ".

Nate looked at her. "I know".

Jibanyan then spoke lazing around. "So Nate, how does this form activate?".

Nate looked at him. "I need to think about Kunou, while having the intention of battling".

Silence followed his words.

Not awkward.

Not tense.

Measured.

Hailey crossed her arms, eyes sharp. "So it's not rage. It's focus."

Nate nodded. "Intent. If my heart isn't steady, it doesn't trigger."

Yasaka's ears flicked. "That makes it safer than most transformations."

Then she frowned. "And more dangerous."

Kunou stood quietly, hands clasped. She hadn't looked away from Nate once.

'So that's why it felt… warm,' she thought. 'Not overwhelming. Just… him.'

Aaron rubbed his chin. "A conditional transformation tied to emotional anchor and combat intent."

He glanced at Nate. "That's not a Balance Breaker. That's closer to a self-made Authority."

Jibanyan whistled. "Dang. Humans really do build the weirdest things."

Nate exhaled and sat down. His shoulders finally relaxed.

'My body still remembers the strain,' he thought. 'Fifteen seconds was already pushing it.'

Hailey stepped closer. "Golden King, huh?"

She smirked. "Guess it stuck."

Nate groaned. "I hate that name."

Kunou smiled. Just a little.

Yasaka looked at them both, expression thoughtful. "Names aside… this changes things."

She met Nate's eyes.

"You're not just uniting clans anymore. You're becoming a symbol."

Nate leaned back, staring at the ceiling.

'Great,' he thought. 'No pressure at all.'

Nate then tilted his head toward Cao Cao. "So… how's the new eye?"

Cao Cao rolled his shoulder once, then smiled. "Great. The Medusa Eye is a solid power boost. Vision, pressure, control—it's cleaner than I expected."

Perseus folded his arms, looking pleased. "You're welcome, buddy."

Cao Cao snorted. "Still not thanking you for the snakes."

Perseus grinned wider. "That part's mandatory."

Nate watched them for a moment, then leaned back.

'Different events,' he thought. 'Different battlefield. But the result's the same.'

His gaze lingered on Cao Cao's face—on the eye that wasn't supposed to be there.

'In canon DxD, he loses an eye anyway,' Nate continued. 'Fate likes its fixed points.'

He exhaled slowly.

'Still… if I hadn't chosen him as my champion… would it have happened another way?'

Cao Cao noticed the look and met his eyes. "You're thinking too hard."

Nate blinked. "Am I that obvious?"

"Yes," Cao Cao said calmly. "And for the record—"

He tapped the side of his head, right next to the eye.

"I don't regret it."

There was no bravado in his voice. Just certainty.

Nate nodded once.

'Good,' he thought. 'Then at least this choice didn't break him.'

Jibanyan stretched nearby. "Man, first Oni, now cursed god-eyes. This house is getting weird."

Aaron laughed. "Getting?"

Kunou shifted closer to Nate, brushing his arm lightly. He glanced at her, and she smiled—soft, steady.

The world felt… aligned. For now.

Later Training Started

They moved away from the noise, up a stone path where the mountain dipped into quiet wind and old pine.

Yasaka sat first, folding her legs. Lily stood nearby, arms crossed but eyes sharp. Nate leaned against a tree, Kunou beside him, tails tucked in close.

"Fifteen seconds," Yasaka said. "That's not a flaw. It's a warning."

Nate nodded. "I felt it. Past that, the burn stops being spiritual and starts being… structural."

Lily frowned. "Your body isn't failing. Your channels are. Spirit Bond is stable. Fox fire is stable. The overlap isn't."

Nate closed his eyes. 'She's right. The pressure spike happens where the two resonate.'

Yasaka continued, calm and precise. "You're forcing synchronization at full output. That's why the jump is so violent. ZZ to UZ in a blink."

"So I shouldn't push harder," Nate said. "I should stretch the ramp."

"Exactly," Lily replied. "No more full transformations during training."

Nate sighed. "Knew you'd say that."

"You'll thank me later," she shot back. "We start with micro-states. One second. Two. Controlled entry, controlled exit."

Yasaka added, "Breath pacing. Heart rate control. And—" her eyes flicked to Kunou "—emotional anchoring without ignition."

Kunou blinked. "Without… ignition?"

Yasaka smiled gently. "You don't need passion every time. Sometimes you need presence."

Nate looked at Kunou. 'So it's not thinking of her as fuel… it's thinking of her as balance.'

He nodded. "I can do that."

"Good," Yasaka said. "Then your goal isn't thirty seconds."

Lily finished it for her. "It's fifteen seconds that don't hurt."

Training ended there. Quiet replaced instruction.

Later, under a broad old tree overlooking Mount Ōe, Nate sat with his back to the trunk. Kunou curled beside him, tails wrapped around both of them like a soft wall against the world.

Neither spoke at first.

The wind moved the leaves. The mountain breathed.

Kunou rested her head against his shoulder.

'I thought it was just power,' she realized. 'Fox fire, Spirit Bond… forms and flames.'

Her fingers tightened lightly in his sleeve.

'But when he transforms… he isn't pulling from me.'

She tilted her head up, looking at his face. Calm now. Human. Tired.

'He's standing with me.'

Nate felt the shift before she spoke. He always did.

"Kuno—"

She leaned up and kissed him.

Not rushed. Not heated. Just sure.

When she pulled back, her cheeks were red, eyes bright but steady.

"I get it now," she said softly.

Nate blinked. "Get what?"

"Our bond," Kunou replied. "It's not a trigger. It's a promise."

Silence followed. The good kind.

Nate smiled, resting his forehead against hers. "Then that's what I'll train with."

She smiled back. "Good. Because I don't want you burning yourself just to protect me."

He kissed her again—gentle, grounding.

One they parted they looked at each other

Nate then looked at her. "Should have done this before".

Nate clapped both hands, as he was holding a ring with no gem, then the Spirit bond energy got absorbed as it started to get condensed and gather as it stopped

As he was now holding a ring with a nine tail Degine inside the Gem, the Gem was clear see through Gem

Nate looked at her. "For you"

He slipped into her. "From now on, we are married, my order of the Yokai King".

She smiled. "As your Queen, I accepted it".

Silent then

They turned their head to see, Lily, Hailey, Fumika, and Kuroka holding their phone with flash on.

Nate froze.

"…Really?" he said flatly.

Kunou blinked, then followed his gaze.

Four phones. All pointed at them. All flashing like a crime scene.

Lily didn't even try to hide it. "Documentation."

Hailey grinned. "Historic moment."

Fumika waved her phone. "Proof you can't deny later."

Kuroka tilted her head, ears twitching. "Ara~ little sister got married before anyone noticed."

Kunou's face went nuclear red.

"T-this was supposed to be quiet," she squeaked.

Nate sighed, rubbing his face with one hand. 'So much for solemn divine union.'

He straightened anyway, pulling Kunou gently closer, arm firm around her waist.

"Delete nothing," he said calmly.

All four paused.

Lily raised a brow. "Oh?"

Nate looked straight at them. "This wasn't a secret. This was a declaration."

Hailey's grin softened. "So… you're serious."

"Dead serious," Nate replied. "Yokai King order. Queen acknowledged. Bond sealed."

Kuroka's smile turned sharp and proud. "Heh. Then welcome to the mess, Queenie."

Kunou swallowed, then lifted her chin. "I'm not afraid."

Lily studied her for a long second, then lowered her phone.

"…Alright," she said. "Then let me be the first to say it properly."

She smiled—small, real.

"Congratulations. Both of you."

Hailey followed. "Yeah. You look good together."

Fumika nodded. "Strong bond. Clean resonance."

Kuroka stretched. "And scary kids someday."

Kunou squeaked again. "K-Kuroka!"

Nate chuckled despite himself.

He looked down at Kunou, thumb brushing the clear gem where the nine-tailed design rested, glowing faintly with shared spirit.

'Married,' he thought.

'Not someday. Not later. Now.'

He leaned down and kissed her forehead.

"Guess we should've done this sooner," he said quietly.

Kunou smiled, squeezing his hand.

"Yes," she replied. "But this timing… feels right."

The mountain didn't argue.

And for once, neither did fate.

The next day Nate was back at Y Academy

Nate looked at his home room teacher. "So?"

Nagasumi just looked back at him. "You missed a lot of days, Mr Adam".

Nate looked at him. "I can make it up".

He raised an eyebrow. "Can you?".

Nate looked at him. "Yup".

Nagasumi stared at him for a long second.

Then he sighed.

"…Follow me."

The classroom door slid open.

Instant chaos.

"HE'S BACK—" "WHY DOES HE LOOK COOLER?" "WAIT WHY IS HIS AURA DIFFERENT—" "I FEEL PRESSURE—" "IS IT HOT IN HERE??"

Desks scraped. Chairs tipped. Someone screamed for no clear reason.

Nate just stood there, hands in his pockets. 'Yep. Same school.'

Nagasumi slammed a book on the desk.

"Quiet."

It worked. Barely.

Nagasumi turned to Nate. "You missed nine days. Exams. Two quizzes. One combat assessment. And"—he adjusted his glasses—"a written warning from the faculty council."

Nate nodded. "Fair."

A student raised their hand. "Sensei… is it true he fought an Oni?"

Another one yelled, "I HEARD HE WON."

Another: "I HEARD HE GOT MARRIED."

Click.

Silence.

Nate slowly turned his head.

"…Who told you that."

Too many people avoided eye contact.

From the back of the room, Kuroka waved cheerfully. "Me~"

Nate exhaled. 'I should have known.'

Nagasumi pinched the bridge of his nose. "We are not discussing your personal life."

He looked back at Nate. "You want to make it up? Prove it."

Nate tilted his head. "How?"

Nagasumi pointed to the board.

SPECIAL MAKE-UP ASSESSMENT

– Written exam

– Practical combat evaluation

– Spirit control test

"Today. After school."

The class collectively gasped.

Nate smiled slightly. "Alright."

That smile made several students very nervous.

A girl whispered, "Isn't that the triple test?"

A boy swallowed. "No one's ever passed that in one day."

Nate walked to his seat, sitting down like this was just another Monday.

'No Z-class authority,' he reminded himself.

'No Spirit Bond overuse. Clean. Controlled.'

Kunou peeked at him from across the room, eyes worried.

Nate met her gaze and gave a small nod.

'I've got this.'

The bell rang.

And just like that, peace at Y Academy officially ended again.

Later, Nate stood outside the assessment hall.

The door opened.

He stepped out.

Hailey, Fumika, Kunou, Kurumu, Mizore, Blizzaria, and Bocchi were waiting. No one spoke at first.

Hailey broke the silence. "So?"

Nate held up his paper.

94%.

For a moment, nobody breathed.

Kurumu blinked. "That's… insane."

Mizore tilted her head. "You missed six percent."

Blizzaria crossed her arms. "Unacceptable."

Bocchi nodded seriously. "Obviously."

Kunou tugged his sleeve, eyes bright. "You won?"

Nate smiled faintly. "Yeah."

He glanced at the paper again. "Could've done better."

Everyone stared at him.

Hailey laughed. "You're ridiculous."

Fumika adjusted her glasses. "That score includes written theory, combat application, and spirit control."

She looked at him closely. "You dominated the last two."

Nate shrugged. "They were fair."

Kurumu leaned in, smirking. "Fair? You knocked out a senior examiner in the combat test."

Nate sighed. "He rushed me."

Blizzaria smirked. "Of course he did."

Kunou hugged his arm. "Nate's strong."

Nate rested his hand on her head. 'And I still have limits.'

The door opened again.

Nagasumi stepped out, holding a clipboard.

"Adam," he said, "as of now, your attendance record is cleared."

He paused.

"…But the faculty is officially watching you."

Nate met his eyes. "Understood."

Nagasumi nodded once. "Go. Enjoy your normal school life."

The teacher walked away.

Kurumu laughed. "Normal. Right."

As they walked down the hall, Nate felt it again.

That faint pressure.

Not hostile.

Not dangerous.

Just attention.

'So this is what being noticed feels like.'

Kunou looked up at him. "Nate?"

"Yeah?"

She smiled. "Don't disappear again."

Nate stopped walking.

He knelt in front of her, calm and steady. "I won't."

She hugged him.

The bell rang.

And just like that—

Y Academy went back to chaos.

Nate looked at Bocchi. "So, Bocchi, how's your band doing?"

Bocchi stiffened like she'd been hit with a flashbang.

She turned her head away, shoulders tight. "G-good."

There was a long pause.

"…I think."

Hailey raised an eyebrow. "That didn't sound convincing."

Bocchi flailed her hands slightly. "N-no, it's fine! We're practicing a lot. A-and we almost fought over a chord progression, b-but that's normal!"

Kurumu grinned. "That's not normal."

Mizore added calmly, "That is conflict."

Bocchi visibly shrank. "S-sorry…"

Nate waved a hand. "Hey. Bands fighting is normal."

She froze.

He continued, calm and direct. "Means you care. If no one argues, the band's already dead."

Bocchi slowly looked at him.

"…Really?"

Nate nodded. "Yeah. Just don't let it turn personal."

Her shoulders relaxed a little. "O-okay."

Blizzaria smirked. "You're oddly good at this."

Nate shrugged. "I've dealt with worse than band drama."

Kunou glanced at him, smiling softly. 'You always say that.'

The bell rang.

Students began flooding the hallway.

Hailey sighed. "Great. Back to pretending we're normal."

Kurumu laughed. "After yesterday? Good luck with that."

Nate adjusted his bag and started walking. "Let's go. I don't feel like being late again."

As they moved, Bocchi lagged behind for a second.

She whispered, barely audible, "T-thanks… for earlier."

Nate didn't turn around. "Anytime."

'School life,' he thought. 'Still chaotic. Still fragile.'

But for once—

manageable.
