~~~ [START]
"You are the one who's in danger," Rowan said, with his hand raised towards Wednesday, who was suspended to a tree like confetti.
"What are you doing?…"
"Saving everyone from you!" he shot before she could finish. "I have to kill you," he continued, his eyes watering, glasses almost slipping from his nose.
"The gargoyle," she said as a thought slipped through her mind, "that was you?"
"Yeah," he replied, head nodding.
"It's always the quiet ones," she whispered as his hand tightened. From his pockets, floating seamlessly by nothing, was a page that seemed to be ripped from a book.
"The girl in the picture… that's you," Rowan said, controlling the page to open right before her eyes.
"You want to kill me because of some picture?" Wednesday shot, eyes cutting, their content meeting with his soul.
"My mother drew that picture twenty-five years ago," Rowan said, expression frowning as his words continued. "She was a powerful seer… she told me about it before she died."
"Rowan, put me down."
"No! My mother said it was my destiny to stop you if you ever came to Nevermore, because you will destroy the school and everyone in it!" he said, hand tightening, causing Wednesday to choke.
"Rowan…" Wednesday tried to speak, but the choking had reached its climax, cutting off her ability to speak.
He was using too much power; he was killing her.
Yet, before the unfortunate could occur, right in the instant when she was about to lose consciousness.
"GRAWW!"
A monster, one that embodied ugliness, came into sight, appearing from nowhere.
Grabbing Rowan by the hand, swinging him in the air, then slamminghis body to the ground.
Rowan let out a cry of pain as the monster opened its palms, revealing large, unnatural claws.
It slashed them across his stomach, spilling his guts everywhere.
Wednesday fell, relieved of the telekinetic pressure Rowan had used on her.
She looked up, still kneeling because of the fall, as the blood from Rowan's dying body spilled on her face with each of the monster's cuts.
"GRAWWLL!"
The monster announced, turning its eyes and staring at Wednesday, who stared directly at it.
DOO!
A sudden sound disturbed the staring contest, as Ash, who had unwillingly tripped due to his drunkenness, stood there watching, completely stunned by the spectacle.
Both Wednesday and the monster turned to him in sync.
There was silence for a while, broken only by the monster's silent growls.
Ash raised his hands in surrender, backing away a bit.
"Hehe," he faked a laugh, hands still raised. "Look… I didn't see anything, so… carry on with whatever you're doing, okay…" He turned around, not bothering to glance back.
After a second or two more, Wednesday and the monster just stared at his retreat.
But then, suddenly, Ash bolted forward, mouth releasing nothing but overwhelmed screams.
He knew the monster wouldn't let him go. He knew the moment it saw him that he would be a target.
And just as he predicted, the monster came growling toward him, reaching him in moments and inserting its claws right into his chest.
"Ahhhhh!"
Not waiting or attempting to deal with him, the monster just ran away, disappearing into the woods with him still screaming as he hung from its hand.
And just like history, Ash and the monster vanished into the woods.
Leaving Wednesday with the corpse of Rowan to witness the occurrences.
Something she instantly knew she would never forget.
Something that turned into an unforgettable memory.
{THE NEXT DAY}
"Help me understand why you claim to have witnessed a murder," a woman asked, crossing her legs as her blonde hair slightly matched the peach of her clothes. "Was it to gain attention?"
"Why should I bother telling you anything?" Wednesday asked, eyes staring directly into hers, but expression unreactive. "You've already decided I'm lying. I know what I saw."
—----
Thud!
The door to the building opened as Wednesday walked out.
"So, I guess you decided to stick around," Tyler said, walking toward her. "Wait… you see Dr. Kinbott too?"
"You should know I'm legally required to be here," Wednesday replied.
"Yeah, me too…"
"Look at us, a couple of teenage tearaways," she interrupted, walking past him.
The lad sighed, following her from behind, hands placed inside his pockets, perhaps a pretense that the wind affected him.
"Hey… when you ran off last night, I wasn't sure what happened," he said, causing Wednesday to pause and turn to him. "And then I heard… crazy…"
"Everyone, including your father, believes I made it all up," Wednesday said with a stern tone.
"Yeah… I know, I…" his phone suddenly buzzed, causing him to glance at it. "I guess it's time for me to go inside… kinda required to."
Wednesday just stared, as though awaiting his leave. But he hesitated.
"You know, for the record," he looked at her, backing away slightly, "I believe you."
Then he walked away, unaware that she was still staring at his retreating figure.
She watched as he opened the building's door and entered. And with his retreat came a whisper, not from the wind, nor from the morning birds.
"You don't."
It was from her.
—------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Nevermore buzzed with the voices of young and energetic teens.
As Wednesday's darkened figure cut through it like a sharp blade. Her feet were uncontrolled, something that was unnatural even for her.
Her eyes turned everywhere, as though on a mission to locate an enemy.
But then she paused, because their orbs had finally found him.
Right there, seated with a bunch of strangers, eating lunch as if unbothered by what she had witnessed him go through yesterday, a monster's claws cutting through his chest, disappearing with him into the trees unseen by anyone.
A person she witnessed vanishing into the wilderness with a monster most people didn't believe or consider to exist.
So she turned immediately, making her way toward his figure.
—
"Come on, man," Ash said, eyes staring daggers at a faceless teen. "You gotta tell me how you do it… I mean, come on, you are literally eating food… how are you doing this?!"
But his words were interrupted when the unnatural darkness of a shadow covered the faceless teen he was staring at.
Ash turned, looking at the girl who was now standing beside him.
He paused for a second too long, tongue moving around his teeth in hopes of removing the bits of food stuck between them.
"Will you die for me?" the girl suddenly asked, expression completely serious.
