Chapter 2: baby sitting
"Ugh." Rowan groaned as the morning sunlight crept into his room through his blinds, making him squint as he slowly opened his eyes. "Fuck." He groaned as he saw the empty bottle of whiskey beside his bed, and as the fog slowly cleared from his head, the events of the night hit him.
"What have I done?" He muttered, sitting up, to look at the time on the wall. "Fuck, 1 already?" Rowan said, jumping out of bed and rushing into his shower, letting the cold water wash over him and wake him up.
"You're late." Sibrina huffed at him as he walked into her living room with an apologetic smile on his face.
"Sorry, I was up late editing," he lied to her, with practised ease as he dropped down next to her on the couch. "So, where are the two brats?" Rowan laughed.
"Tracy is outside somewhere, and Laura is upstairs reading," Sibrina said as she stood up with a groan. "Now that you've finally gotten here to babysit. I've got to run a few errands. If Tracy comes back covered in mud again...Well, good luck." She smiled, grabbing her keys and purse off the counter.
"Great." Rowan sighed, looking up at the ceiling as he heard her car drive off into the distance. It wasn't long before a soft creak of the floorboard caught his attention, and a moment later, he felt the couch dip as someone sat beside him.
Turning his head, Rowan met Laura's red eyes as she held her stuffy against her small chest. "Uncle Rowan." She said, her eyes staring deep into his soul, sending shivers up his body, the way they always did. "You look sad again." She whispered softly.
"Sad? Me? Never. "He chuckled, making the girl frown slightly as she climbed onto his lap and sat there till Rowan sighed and wrapped his arms around her small frame and held her tight. "Okay, little one, you win, I'm a little sad," he admitted finally, causing the little albino girl to hug him.
After a few minutes of cuddling on the couch, Rowan and Laura heard a commotion coming from outside in the backyard. With a sigh, the man placed his small niece on the couch and stood up, stretching before he went outside to find his hyper niece Tracy trying her best to climb a tall tree in the backyard, the mud on her shoes giving her trouble finding good traction. "Tracy, you are going to fall." Rowan sighed at his young niece as she struggled to climb the tall maple tree, her feet slipping and sliding off the wet bark of the tree.
"No, I can make it, like you did while climbing that cliffside in Africa!" She cried as she continued to claw and dig her feet and hands into the hard trunk, making him sigh.
"Just come down." He sighed at her as she turned to glare at him before going right back to climbing. "Tracy, if I need to catch you I'm going to spank that butt," Rowan warned, walking closer just incase she slipped.
"You'd never hit me! I'm your favorite." She grunted with a smirk. She reached for a branch just above her, but before she could grip it, she felt her mud-covered shoe slip, sending the young girl plummeting from the tall maple with a shriek that turned into a gasp as her Uncle suddenly caught her.
"What did I say?" Rowan asked with a slight chuckle and a stern tone, making the young girl look away from his brown eyes as a blush spread on her face.
"Spanking?" She asked hesitantly. "But you really wouldn't do that to your favorite, right?" She smiled up at him innocently as she batted her eyelashes at him adorably.
Rowan just stared at the girl for a moment, a grin coming to his face." And who said you were my favorite?" he asked spinning her around and laying a quick pat on her ass making the 11-year-old girl jump before he put her down.
"Meany," she said sticking out her tongue as she rubbed her butt where he had just spanked her. "We both know I'm your favorite." She giggled before taking off in the backyard. The man watched her run off with a chuckle before heading back inside to see Laura still sitting on the couch watching TV.
"Your older sister is a handful sometimes," Rowan told the smaller girl as she looked at him with a shrug.
"Mom always says she got all of the energy in the family," Laura said quietly as she patted the spot next to her on the couch. He quickly took a seat next to the girl as she curled into his side with a smile, watching the TV. "I can't wait till she goes on her camping trip," Laura said with a giggle as her older sister's shouts echoed through the house from her running.
"Oh, right. Some kind of Girl Scout thing." Rowan said, remembering Sibrina mentioning something about it in passing last night during dinner.
"Mmhmm, I can finally read my books in peace." She giggled at the idea, her face glowing at the thought, her smile contagious to her uncle.
A little while later, the door swung open, and Sibrina came walking in with a bunch of bags filled with groceries. Rowan stood up quickly and helped put everything away. "Thank you for watching the kids. I know you are busy with your videos." Sibrina sighed as they put away the last of the food.
"Of course, I've got to spend as much time with them before I take off again." He smiled. As soon as he said the words, Sibrina frowned.
"Already planning another trip? You just got back," she sighed, looking at her little brother disappointedly.
"Ya, you know,w got to keep the content coming for the fans." Rowan lied through his teeth as he leaned against the kitchen counter. "I'm thinking somewhere in Asia this time." He added with a slight nod.
"Why not try something closer? What's wrong with camping in the United States?" Sibrina asked with a hopeful smile to her younger brother.
"As much fun as camping out in the forest can be, my subscribers are always expecting a fun journey to some distant land." He said, hoping his sister would stop pushing him before he snapped.
"I just...wish you would stay around more." She sighed. "Laura and Tracy miss their uncle when you are gone." She sighed as she started cooking some dinner. "Well, will you at least stay for dinner? Rebecca will be coming over as well, so you can spend some time with all three of them." Sibrina asked, trying to compromise as Rowan sighed and nodded his head.
Before his mind flashed back to last night with Rebecca on the phone, and what had happened. "Ya, sure, that would be nice," Rowan said, pushing the thought to the side. No matter what, he could never let something like that ever happen again.
The sound of footsteps on the floor made Rowan turn his head just in time to see Tracy trying to sneak past the kitchen, her clothes full of dirt and mud with a few sticks and twigs in her hair. "And just where do you think you're going, miss?" Sibrina sighed, making the hyperactive girl freeze and spin to face her mother.
"Just upstairs," She said nervously. "I was just about to...uh, shower?" she said, knowing what her mother would say.
"Mmhmm, you'd better, your cousin is coming over soon," Sibrina said sternly, her arms crossed as her daughter nodded her head before taking off upstairs, the sound of the door shutting echoing through the house.
"Is it going to just be Rebecca?" Rowan asked curiously.
"Yep. Dan and Ashly are going out for a date night, so she is going to stay the night here." His older sister said as she cooked dinner, the conversation falling into a silence.
As Rowan fought with the guilt in his chest over what had happened between them, the front door opened. And a moment later, Rebecca appeared, her flaming red mane in a messy braid down her back as she looked into the kitchen and met Rowan's eyes with her bright green ones.
Her cheeks instantly flushed, as she bit her lip and waved shyly. "U-Uncle." She stammered as she bit her bottom lip hard, the young teen's body shaking slightly from embarrassment, lust, and nervousness.
"How are you doing today, Becca?" Rowan said, trying his best not to give away that something had happened between them to his older sister as she stood beside him and continued cooking.
"F-fine. Thank you." She said as she played with the hem of her skirt before she smiled and went over to give him a quick hug, before taking off to find Tracy and Laura.
"Okay, girls. Dinner's ready." Sibrina yelled throughout the house before setting out a pot of noodles on the dinner table with some sauce and a few sides. Not long after, they could hear the girls' footsteps and giggles coming down the stairs.
Sitting at the table was a strange feeling to Rowan as his older sister and three beautiful nieces sat with him and ate. He loved his family dearly, but... a part of him longed for something else.
He didn't have a wife, no kids, just...his apartment, his career, and a lot of alcohol to keep him from dwelling on the loneliness that filled him to the brim at night.
" So, Uncle, I was thinking." Rebecca's voice pulled him out of his head as he turned to look at her. " Can I stay the night at your place instead?" she asked, looking into his eyes hopefully, making his sister pause before speaking up.
"Well...that would be up to your Dad and Sibrina. I'm sure she already has a fun night planned for you three." He said, trying to dissuade her from asking further.
"It's fine with me. You were just saying you want to spend some time with your nieces before your trip," Sibrina said, clapping her hands lightly. "And I'm sure it's fine with Dan as well." She said as Rowan gave a sigh of defeat
