Alice was sitting outside at the riverbank, her sister Lorina sat next to her reading a book while Alice was feeling increasingly bored.
"I tried looking into her book previously, but it's just some textbook. Honestly, who would read a book with no pictures or conversation in their free time? It's sooo boring."
With these thoughts she stood up, intending to go back inside and maybe play with Edith.
Halfway through the garden a rabbit wearing a suit crossed her path.
While hurrying past her, it looked at its pocket watch and spoke to itself: "Oh dear! Oh dear! I shall be too late!"
Alice stumbled but managed to catch herself. She had never heard a rabbit speak, nor had she seen one wearing a suit before.
"Such a magical occurrence, I have to tell Lorina! But would she even believe me? She would probably think I'm seeing things again. Maybe if I follow it, I can find its hiding spot!"
Deciding to find the rabbit's home before telling her sister, Alice went to chase it. She followed it to the edge of the field, where it jumped into a large rabbit hole under the hedge.
Curious about the rabbit's home, Alice decided to follow it. But just as she entered the hole, she lost her footing and fell, leaving only a faint scream behind.
At the river, Lorina looked up from her book for a few seconds to investigate the noise.
"Strange, I could swear I heard Alice scream just now. Maybe I'm catching her penchant for seeing and hearing things."
Alice fell through the darkness for a long time. She had stopped screaming after a minute or two and was now wondering:
"I wonder how many miles I have fallen by this time! I must be getting somewhere near the centre of the Earth. Let me see: that would be about 4000 miles down."
Alice had learned a lot of things in school, and this information happened to be one of these things.
"Yes, that's about the right distance—but then I wonder what latitude or longitude I've gotten to."
Alice had no idea what these words meant, but she thought they were nice grand words to say.
But what she herself failed to realise was that her words were not truly born of interest but only spoken to calm her fear and sadness.
She fell and fell, seeing some passing objects like shelves with marmalade. Normally she would've been elated to get some orange marmalade, but she simply wasn't in the mood.
Her thoughts swirled and swirled.
"Am I ever gonna see Mom and Dad again? Did Lorina notice my disappearance? Will Edith be OK if I'm not there to care for her?
Who is going to take care of my cat Dinah if I don't return?"
But as time passed, they became darker.
"Would they even care? They have Edith to care for and Lorina to study, and those two have each other. Would they truly search for me, or would they just give up after a few hours?"
"No, I can't think that way. They love me! They would never abandon me!"
But the seeds of doubt were planted.
Just as Alice had convinced herself of the truth, she saw light and the ground coming closer. She closed her eyes in fear, terrified of the pain to come. But even after seconds of waiting, she felt nothing.
