Chapter 85 - His

He was wearing a neat blue Power Armor, his posture as straight as a pine tree, and his face held an expression Cassius had never seen before: a mixture of resolve and a hint of... apprehension? This was uncommon for Gaius, who was known for his composure.

"Sergeant Karl?" Cassius sat up straight, asking with some confusion, "Is something wrong? Has Ms. Kolaesa's condition relapsed? Or is there an anomaly with the Company's patrol?" He subconsciously guessed at official matters.

Gaius did not answer immediately. He stepped into the office, the metal soles of his boots making clear sounds against the floor. He walked to about five paces in front of the desk, and then, under Cassius's slightly surprised gaze, performed an action that caught the First Company Captain completely off guard—

He bent his right knee, kneeling heavily on the cold, hard metal floor, and bowed his head, which usually only saluted the Emperor's icon, the Primarch, and the Chapter Master.

This gesture completely stunned Cassius. Astartes Brothers rarely performed such a grand salute, except on extremely special and solemn occasions, especially not during routine work reports.

"Gaius? What is this...?" Cassius's words trailed off.

Gaius raised his head, his cerulean eyes shining with unparalleled determination. He looked directly at Cassius, his voice clear and steady, as if he had made some profound decision, every word striking Cassius's heart:

"Captain, I request that you... grant me and Kolesa..."

He paused, seemingly weighing the most accurate words, but ultimately chose the most direct, and most shocking, phrasing:

"...to be together."

"..."

A dead silence fell over the office. Cassius felt as if he might be hallucinating from overtiredness. He blinked, looking at Gaius, who knelt before him with an utterly serious expression. After a brief system crash, his brain laboriously processed the explosive information contained in those few words.

"Together?" Cassius subconsciously repeated, his tone filled with absurdity and disbelief. "You and that... Aeldari Autarch? Kolesa?"

"Yes, Captain," Gaius's voice did not waver in the slightest. "I am well aware of how presumptuous this request is, and even... it might be seen as a betrayal of the Imperium's tenets. However, Captain, I need to give her a... proper standing."

"Proper standing?!" Cassius's voice unconsciously rose several octaves. He abruptly stood up from his chair, hands braced on the desk, body leaning forward, his gaze like two sharp swords, trying to pierce Gaius's inner thoughts. "Gaius! Do you know what you're saying?! You are an Astartes Brother! A Sergeant of the Ultramarines First Company! Your life, your loyalty, can only belong to the Emperor, to the Primarch, to Ultramar!"

He felt a rush of blood to his head, not from anger, but more from extreme shock and a kind of... confusion at being caught off guard by the sudden situation. He had indeed, out of Dorian's nonsense and a moment of anger, pawned Kolesa off on Gaius, but that was purely a temporary measure to solve a problem. He had never imagined, nor would he ever have believed, that things would develop to this point!

Could it be... that angry remark of his, that irresponsible act of passing the buck, had somehow, by a strange twist of fate... brought them together?! What the hell was this?!

Cassius forced himself to calm down. He took a deep breath, trying to use reason and dogma to awaken his capable subordinate, who seemed to be temporarily confused. He walked around the desk, stood in front of Gaius, looking down at him, his tone heavy and serious:

"Gaius, look at me." Cassius's voice deepened, but the pressure intensified. "Reiterate your identity. You are not a mortal; you are the Emperor's Angel of Death, a superhuman warrior modified by twenty-two surgical procedures! A Primaris Astartes! Your duty is to destroy the enemies of the Imperium, to guard the Imperium of Man's territory, not to indulge in... in such mundane emotions!"

He paused, then continued to apply pressure: "And her identity! Kolesa, Aeldari, an alien! A race considered lowly, dangerous, and needing vigilance or even purification in the Imperium's official doctrine (though he personally didn't fully agree with such extreme views)! Her way of thinking, her life form, her soul's essence—all are fundamentally different from ours! There's an insurmountable chasm between you two!"

Cassius stared intently into Gaius's eyes, hoping to see hesitation, retreat, or realization. However, he was disappointed. Gaius's gaze remained firm, as if he had pondered these factors a thousand times.

"Captain, I understand everything you've said." Gaius's voice was calm, yet carried an undeniable strength. "The Imperium's laws, the Chapter's doctrines, racial differences... I know all of these. But..."

He looked up, meeting Cassius's scrutinizing gaze without fear: "Emotions don't arise from rational judgment. They're like a stray bullet on the battlefield, unpredictable and impossible to completely avoid."

Cassius was momentarily choked by Gaius's somewhat philosophical defense. He waved his hand in irritation: "Don't talk nonsense! Gaius, tell me, what about her? That Aeldari woman, does she understand what this means? Is she willing to abandon her identity and status as an Autarch, and whatever other future her long life might hold, just to be tied to an Astartes like you... an Astartes who might die for Ultramar at any moment? To live a life that could be discriminated against, ostracized, and constantly face danger?"

This was the most crucial question in Cassius's opinion. He didn't believe an Aeldari Autarch would so easily give up everything for a future so uncertain and risky in every aspect.

However, Gaius's answer once again shattered his expectations.

Gaius answered clearly and affirmatively, with hardly any hesitation:

"Yes, Captain. She is willing."

"She told me herself... she's willing to die with me for Ultramar."

"..."

Cassius fell completely silent.

He stood rooted to the spot, unmoving, as if he had turned into a statue. Only the low hum of the circulating air system remained in the office. He looked at Gaius, kneeling on the ground, his eyes clear and resolute, the words "willing to die with me for Ultramar" echoing in his mind.

Coming from an Aeldari, the impact of those words was unimaginable. What kind of resolve did that require? What kind of... emotion?

Cassius was not entirely heartless. He was short-tempered and direct, but he also valued loyalty and courage, no matter their origin. Gaius was a warrior he had personally trained, one of his most trusted Sergeants, whose character and loyalty were beyond doubt. And Kolesa... that Aeldari woman, in their previous interactions, apart from the initial conflict, hadn't shown any malice. In fact, when facing desperation, she chose to exchange a holy relic for the survival of her people, which itself demonstrated a sense of responsibility.

Now, these two—one his most valued subordinate, the other an alien noblewoman "half-forced" back by their Chapter—had, through his accidental "matchmaking," developed such a... profound relationship.

Responsibility. Cassius suddenly realized that from the moment he pushed Kolesa towards Gaius, he was inextricably linked to this matter.

After a long silence, Cassius slowly and deeply inhaled, then heavily exhaled. The expression on his face gradually shifted from initial shock and annoyance to an extremely complex one, mixed with helplessness, resignation, and even a hint of... a very subtle emotion that he himself was unwilling to admit.

He took a step forward, extended his hands, and gripped Gaius's shoulders, pulling him up from the ground with force.

"Get up, Gaius." Cassius's voice carried a rare weariness and solemnity, stripped of its usual brusqueness.

Gaius stood up as instructed, his gaze still fixed on his Captain's face, awaiting his final judgment.

Cassius looked at Gaius and said, word by word: "Good. Mutual affection." He seemed to be savoring the phrase, such a strange and heavy word for an Astartes.

"This matter, it began because of me..." He recalled his impulsive decision back then, a bitter smile touching his lips. "And it should... end because of me."

He released Gaius's shoulders and turned to walk back behind his desk, but did not sit down. He leaned his hands on the desktop, his gaze sharp as he looked at Gaius:

"I will go to the Chapter Master, explain the situation, and... make a request for you and Ms. Kolaesa."

An incredible light instantly burst forth in Gaius's eyes. He immediately straightened his posture: "Captain! I..."

"Don't be so quick to thank me!" Cassius raised a hand to cut him off, his tone once again becoming extremely serious. "Listen, Gaius. This is just my personal stance and the action I will take. Whether the Chapter's high command, especially the Chapter Master, will agree, I cannot guarantee. The Ultramarines are not inflexible, and Lord Guilliman's return has brought new perspectives, but this matter is too significant, involving relations with aliens, challenging ten millennia of Imperial tradition."

He paused, his voice dropping even lower, carrying a strong warning:

"Moreover, even if the Chapter Master, for some consideration, gives you leeway and tacitly approves your relationship, you must understand that this is merely an internal 'tacit approval' within the Chapter. The Imperial Inquisition, especially the fanatics of the Ordo Xenos, will never stand by! Once word gets out, you and Kolesa will both face immense danger! The Inquisition doesn't care if you have mutual affection; in their eyes, this is blasphemy, heresy!"

Cassius's gaze was like the coldest blade, looking directly at Gaius: "This means that from the moment you made this decision, you must constantly remain vigilant, protect her, and protect yourself. The road ahead will be full of thorns, and you may even... need to take up arms against 'compatriots' from within the Imperium."

"Are you prepared for all of this, Sergeant Karl Horn?"

There was no fear or hesitation on Gaius's face. He met his Captain's gaze and nodded heavily, his voice as steady as a rock:

"Yes, Captain. I am prepared. For her, and for my choice, I am willing to bear all consequences."

Cassius looked at him deeply, as if to engrave his current resolve firmly in his mind. Finally, he waved his hand, his tone returning to its usual directness, but with a hint of an almost imperceptible complex emotion:

"Go. Maintain the status quo, keep a low profile, and control Dorian's big mouth until I report to the Chapter Master and receive clear instructions!"

"Yes, Captain!" Gaius saluted Cassius again, a standard military salute, this time filled with genuine gratitude and respect. He said no more, turned, and left the Captain's office with firm steps.

The metal door closed behind Gaius. Cassius stood alone in the office, looking at the door, and after a long while, slowly sat back in his chair, letting out a long sigh filled with too many emotions. He rubbed his still throbbing eyelids, giving a bitter smile:

"It seems... this twitching eyelid wasn't for nothing..."

With an indescribably complex feeling, Gaius quickly returned to his chamber i-10-a. As soon as the door slid open, a figure, like a startled fawn, rushed into his arms, bringing with it a waft of fragrance.

It was Kolesa. She had been waiting anxiously, and seeing Gaius return, she eagerly embraced him, looking up, her purple eyes filled with tension and anticipation, her voice trembling slightly:

"Gaius... that... that fierce First Company Captain, what... what did he say? Did he agree?"

She carefully watched Gaius's expression, afraid to hear bad news.

Gaius felt the slight tremor of the body in his arms, and a strong protective urge welled up within him. He reached out, gently wrapped his arms around her slender waist, pulling her tighter into his embrace, trying to dispel her unease with his own body heat.

He lowered his head, looking at her eyes, beautiful like amethyst yet filled with worry. He didn't hide anything, telling her Captain Cassius's words exactly as they were. This included the Captain's willingness to request the Chapter Master, the risk that the Chapter Master might not agree, and the greatest future threat—the Inquisition.

Kolesa listened quietly. When she heard that Captain Cassius was actually willing to help, a light of surprise instantly burst forth in her eyes, but when she heard about the subsequent difficulties and dangers, that light dimmed, replaced by a trace of fear, but more so, a resolute determination to face it together with Gaius.

"He... he's really willing to help us?" Kolesa's voice was filled with unbelievable surprise as she tightly clutched the fabric over Gaius's chest. "I thought... he would be furious, even punish you..."

"Captain... although he's short-tempered, he's not unreasonable." Gaius explained, his tone carrying respect for Cassius. "He said, this matter started because of him, and it should be resolved by him."

Kolesa buried her face in Gaius's chest, her voice muffled: "Then... what about the Chapter Master? Will he agree?"

Gaius was silent for a moment, gently stroking her silver hair, and answered truthfully: "I don't know. The Chapter Master's considerations are far more complex and far-reaching than we imagine. He needs to weigh the Chapter's reputation, the Imperium's laws, relations with other factions... and all the potential impacts this matter itself might bring."

He paused, then continued: "But, no matter what, the Captain has already secured an opportunity for us. This is already much better than my worst fears."

Kolesa looked up. Although there was still worry for the future in her eyes, her resolve remained undiminished. She reached out and gently caressed Gaius's resolute face, softly saying: "It's okay, Gaius. As long as you don't give up, I won't be afraid. Whether the Chapter Master agrees or not, no matter how many dangers the future holds, I will face them with you."

Her smile was like a phantom orchid blooming in a cold night, beautiful and tinged with a hint of sorrow, yet filled with undeniable sincerity: "Just as I said, being by your side, even if we ultimately die together for Ultramar, I am willing."

Gaius looked at her, the softest part of his heart deeply touched. He said nothing more, only tightened his arms, completely enveloping her petite body in his broad and warm embrace.

They held each other in silence, quietly feeling each other's breath and heartbeat. Outside the chamber, there was the vast and cold warship, the unknown star system they were about to reach, and the potential for raging storms. But at this moment, in this small space, they had only each other, and a future that had just received a glimmer of hope, yet still had an uncertain path ahead.

They did not know what Chapter Master Marius Calgar would decide, nor when the shadow of the Inquisition would fall. But they knew that from this moment on, their destinies were tightly intertwined. Whether glory or destruction lay ahead, they would face it hand in hand.

Captain Cassius stood at the entrance of his office, taking a deep breath as if to expel all hesitation and unease from his chest. The metal door closed behind him, temporarily separating him from the stacks of files and data-slates. At this moment, he needed to face another storm, one perhaps more difficult to handle and with more unpredictable consequences than administrative affairs—to present that shocking request to Chapter Master Marius Calgar on behalf of his Sergeant Karl and the Aeldari Autarch Ms. Kolaesa.

He had made up his mind. This was not only for Gaius, the loyal Sergeant he had personally trained and regarded as his right-hand man, but also to clarify the karma he had sown in anger. More importantly, it was for the Aeldari woman who dared to abandon everything, even vowing with her life to follow an Astartes Brother. That resolute courage, even across the chasm of race and position, deserved corresponding respect.

He adjusted the collar of his deep blue power armor, though it was already immaculate. Then, he took steady and determined steps, heading towards the Chapter Master's office, located in the core area of the battleship and symbolizing the highest authority of the Ultramarines Chapter.

The corridor was long and solemn, with large portraits hanging at intervals on the cold metal walls. The paintings depicted heroes who had emerged throughout the Ultramarines Chapter's ten-thousand-year history: the pioneering predecessors who bravely charged during the Ullanor Crusade; the Company Champion who fought valiantly in the Battle of Calth; the Chapter Master Auguston who turned the tide in countless border conflicts... Their majestic gazes seemed to pierce through time, solidified on the canvas, and also seemed to pierce through Cassius's power armor, reaching deep into his heart.

As he walked, Cassius felt an invisible, heavy pressure descend upon him. The gazes of those heroic predecessors, in his perception now, were no longer merely encouraging, but more like a silent interrogation:

'Cassius, as First Company Captain, your duty is to lead your warriors to glory and victory. Why then do you seek to meet the Chapter Master for a request that might taint the Chapter's purity?'

'Do you know the oath of an Astartes Brother? Do you know the ten-thousand-year blood feud between the Imperium of Man and the Xenos?'

'Are you placing personal feelings above the Chapter's interests with this action?'

These imagined questions were like cold needlepoints, probing at his inner resolve. His steps involuntarily slowed, and his brows furrowed. Yes, he knew he was doing something that went against tradition and challenged convention. The emotions of an Astartes Brother, especially feelings for the opposite sex, had always been a strictly regulated and even deliberately downplayed area, let alone when the object was an Aeldari.

A flicker of wavering doubt crossed his mind. Perhaps... he should heed the warning of reason, turn back, suppress this matter forcefully, and make Gaius completely abandon the idea? That would be the most conventional and trouble-free approach.

But this thought only existed for a moment before he forcefully extinguished it. He recalled the unwavering determination in Gaius's azure eyes when he knelt before him; he remembered Ms. Kolaesa's resolute words, "willing to die together"; and he thought of his own crude act of pushing the responsibility onto Gaius during that conflict. Responsibility, since it arose from him, must be borne by him, and a resolution sought.

"For my subordinate, and for that brave woman... it's worth a try," Cassius said to himself again, as if reinforcing his slightly wavering resolve. He quickened his pace once more, leaving those imagined interrogative gazes behind him.

Finally, he arrived before the immensely thick, metal grand door marking the Chapter Master's office, carved with the Imperial Aquila and the ring of macragge. Two Honour Guard Warriors, clad in ornate Terminator armor and standing like steel statues, guarded it like gatekeepers. Their crimson eye lenses turned towards Cassius, with an air of scrutiny.

"Captain Cassius," one of the Honour Guard Warrior's voices, amplified by his helmet, came out deep and metallic, "Do you have something to report to Chapter Master?" Their duty was to filter out all unnecessary disturbances, ensuring the Chapter Master could focus on the most important decisions.

Cassius stopped, straightened his posture, and looked straight ahead, answering in as steady a tone as possible: "Yes. There is an important matter that needs to be reported to the Chapter Master in person." He deliberately emphasized the word "important."

The two Honour Guard Warriors exchanged glances, seemingly communicating silently through an internal channel. As First Company Captain, Cassius held a revered position, and his "important matter" could not be taken lightly. They asked no further questions; one of them turned sideways, extended an arm covered in power armor, and forcefully pushed open the heavy grand door.

The door slid inward, emitting a low, majestic grinding sound. The scene behind the door unfolded before Cassius—a spacious office like a small hall, with a high vaulted ceiling, a holy icon of the Emperor standing in the corner, and most striking of all, the obsidian throne at the far end of the room, elevated by several steps, and the figure seated upon it.

Marius Calgar, Chapter Master of the Ultramarines Chapter, King of Macragge. He was not wearing his iconic "Armour of Fate" but a relatively lighter yet still imposing deep blue commander's uniform. Even so, as he sat there, he was like an unshakeable mountain, exuding the authority of commanding a thousand armies and the composure forged through countless battles.

Calgar was evidently reviewing a holographic star map suspended before him, which detailed intelligence on the Connaris region and the fleet's impending deployment plan. Hearing the door open, he looked up and, seeing Cassius enter, a hint of appropriate surprise appeared on his stern face.

"Cassius?" Calgar's voice was steady, with a touch of inquiry, "I recall that at this time, you should be handling the follow-up reports for Kha-IV submitted by the 7th Company and Eighth Company, as well as coordinating the initial reception arrangements upon arrival in the Connaris region?" His implication was that unless it was an extremely important matter, Cassius should not be leaving his post to disturb him now.

Cassius quickly walked to the foot of the throne's steps and stopped. He first raised his right arm, clenched his fist, and heavily struck his left chest power armor, emitting a dull thud, delivering an impeccably standard military salute to the Chapter Master with utmost respect.

"Chapter Master," Cassius's voice carried an unprecedented solemnity.

Calgar nodded slightly, indicating he was excused from saluting. "Speak, what is so important that you came in person?" His gaze was sharp, as if it could penetrate all appearances and reach the core of the issue.

Cassius lowered his arm and took a deep breath. He knew what he was about to say would stir up a storm in this office, which symbolized the highest authority of the Ultramarines Chapter. He did not beat around the bush, cutting straight to the chase, for in such matters, any preamble would seem superfluous and insincere.

"Chapter Master, I have come regarding my Sergeant, Gaius, and... the Aeldari Autarch, Ms. Kolaesa."

He clearly articulated these two names and their connection.

Upon hearing this, Calgar's brow furrowed almost imperceptibly, but he did not interrupt, merely signaling with his eyes for Cassius to continue. He was naturally aware of Ms. Kolaesa being housed in Gaius's chamber, and it was a temporary measure he had tacitly approved. But he did not believe this matter warranted the First Company Captain to report to him so formally at this time.

Meeting the Chapter Master's scrutinizing gaze, Cassius pressed on, stating the full story as concisely and clearly as possible: "...The matter stemmed from my anger over the rumors spread by Dorian. At the time, I failed to handle it properly, and in a moment of impulse, I completely pushed the responsibility of looking after Ms. Kolaesa onto Sergeant Karl, ordering them to share a chamber."

He first admitted his own mistake, taking responsibility upon himself.

"However, during their subsequent interactions, especially during the Warp journey, Ms. Kolaesa experienced severe discomfort due to her unique physiology. Sergeant Karl diligently cared for her, and a certain... emotional connection seems to have developed between them... one that goes beyond the scope of conventional protection and being protected."

He chose his words carefully, avoiding overly provocative terms, but the meaning was already very clear.

"Just recently, Sergeant Karl confessed to me voluntarily, and... pleaded with me to grant him permission to be with Ms. Kolaesa..."

Finally, that earth-shattering request was voiced before the Chapter Master.

The office fell into a deathly silence. Even the air seemed to solidify. Calgar sat on the obsidian throne, his face devoid of any expression, but in his deep eyes, a storm seemed to be silently brewing. Cassius could even feel the surrounding space becoming viscous due to the invisible pressure emanating from the Primarch's heir.

Cassius's heart was in his throat. He was prepared to face the Chapter Master's overwhelming wrath, his thunderous reprimand. He could even imagine how the Chapter Master would sharply question his dereliction of duty as a Captain, how he would vehemently denounce Gaius's abandonment of the Astartes creed, how he would declare this matter a desecration of Imperial law... He lowered his head slightly, awaiting the judgment.

However, the anticipated storm did not immediately arrive.

After a long, suffocating silence, Calgar finally spoke slowly. But his voice was not the furious outburst Cassius had imagined; instead, it was a calm tone, imbued with deep thought, as if stating an ancient and complex truth:

"Humanity and the Aeldari..." Calgar's voice echoed in the spacious office, "From the distant past until now, there have always been incessant conflicts, rivers of blood. Each side views the other as a threat, as an alien. This is a Chapter written over ten millennia of history."

His words carried the weight of history, and Cassius couldn't help but look up, somewhat surprised, at the Chapter Master.

Calgar continued: "However, beyond conflict, there has also been cooperation. When facing greater threats, under specific circumstances, we have fought side by side. You and I both know this." He was referring to certain undisclosed, secret alliances against Chaos or the Tyranids.

"And after the return of Primarch Guilliman..." Calgar mentioned the Primarch's name, with immense reverence and a hint of complexity in his tone, "He brought many changes, many... customs not entirely consistent with ten millennia of tradition. He reactivated and reformed the Deathwatch, strengthened limited cooperation with various races, and even maintained... a certain connection with the Aeldari 'Ynnari'."

He looked deeply at Cassius: "The Imperium of Man is no longer the Imperium of Man of ten thousand years ago. The conservatism of the High Lords of Terra, the extreme fanaticism of certain factions within the Inquisition, compared to the brutal and complex reality of the galaxy, seem... somewhat lagging. We all know this, but often, for various considerations, we are unwilling to easily bring it up."

These words completely took Cassius by surprise. He had expected to hear a staunch defense of traditional tenets, but instead, the Chapter Master analyzed the complexity of the relationship between the Imperium of Man and the Xenos from a broader, more realistic perspective, even subtly pointing out the issues of rigidity within the Imperium of Man.

Calgar seemed to notice Cassius's surprise, and he leaned slightly forward, revealing an even more astonishing fact:

"Moreover, Cassius, you may not know this. In the history of our Ultramarines Chapter, and even earlier, the Thirteenth Legion, there have been... similar precedents."

"What?" Cassius couldn't help but blurt out, he simply couldn't believe his ears.

"Yes," Calgar affirmed with a nod, a hint of reminiscence in his eyes, "That was during the late Great Crusade and the tumultuous years after the Horus Heresy ended. A very small number of veterans, due to severe injuries or other reasons, chose to retire or transfer to logistical roles. Some of them had... formed connections with certain Aeldari women, and eventually took them, living incognito, back to certain worlds in Ultramar."

Cassius was utterly shocked; this news completely overturned his understanding of the Legion's history.

"Of course," Calgar added, his tone becoming serious, "These cases were extremely rare and classified as top secret, absolutely confidential. Because at that time, after the Horus Heresy, the Imperium of Man's rejection and hostility towards all non-human races reached its peak, and any connection with Xenos could lead to utter disaster. Even now, our relationship with the Aeldari is still a dual state of mutual hostility, yet forced to engage in limited cooperation due to reality."

At this point, Calgar's tone shifted, his gaze once again sharp, returning to the core issue at hand:

"So, Cassius, returning to the matter of Gaius and Ms. Kolaesa. While historical and realistic factors are indeed complex, when it comes to individuals, we need to focus on the more fundamental questions."

He asked the same question that Cassius had initially been concerned about, and which would be crucial in determining his final stance:

"She, Ms. Kolaesa, a proud Autarch of the Aeldari, would she truly be willing to abandon her identity, her status, and the other futures she might have had in her long life, merely to be with an Astartes Brother who could at any moment die fighting for Ultramar?"

This question went straight to the heart of the matter.

Captain Cassius immediately straightened his body and answered clearly, without hesitation:

"Yes, Chapter Master Calgar. She told Sergeant Karl herself..." He paused, as if reliving the impact of those words, "...she is willing to die for Ultramar alongside Sergeant Karl."

"..."

Chapter Master Calgar, hearing this, was visibly stunned. For the first time, his weathered face, always maintaining an air of dignity and composure, showed such a clear emotion of "shock". His deep eyes, pupils slightly constricted, as if needing time to digest the weight of these words coming from an Aeldari Autarch.

"Die... for Ultramar?" Chapter Master Calgar repeated softly, his voice full of disbelief. An Aeldari, willing to sacrifice her life for a segmentum of the Imperium of Man, for an Astartes Brother? What kind of determination did this require? What kind of... emotional investment?

Silence once again fell over the office. But this time, the silence, unlike the previous oppressive one, was more akin to deep contemplation and deliberation.

Chapter Master Calgar's gaze shifted from Captain Cassius's face to a non-existent point in the void. His fingers unconsciously, rhythmically tapped the armrest of the obsidian throne, making a faint "tap, tap" sound. He was weighing, considering. Weighing the Chapter's traditions against the flexibility of reality, considering Sergeant Karl's value and Ms. Kolaesa's determination, assessing the potential risks and... perhaps some symbolic positive impact this matter might bring.

Captain Cassius held his breath, his heart pounding violently in his chest. He knew that Chapter Master Calgar's next words would decide the fate of Sergeant Karl and Ms. Kolaesa.

As if an eternity had passed, Chapter Master Calgar finally stopped tapping. He slowly turned his head, his gaze returning to Captain Cassius, now restored to its usual calm and decisiveness, but seemingly with something more.

He spoke slowly and clearly, every word seemingly carrying immense weight:

"Good."

Just one word, yet it caused Captain Cassius's heart, which had been lodged in his throat, to plummet back into place, even making him feel a moment of dizziness from the sudden drop.

Chapter Master Calgar continued:

"I, Chapter Master Marius Calgar, in the name of the Ultramarines Chapter, approve of Sergeant Karl and Ms. Kolaesa maintaining the relationship they both desire."

A formal endorsement, carrying the authority of the Chapter Master!

Captain Cassius was about to salute and express his gratitude excitedly, but Chapter Master Calgar raised a hand to stop him, his tone becoming extremely serious, carrying an undeniable warning:

"But!" Chapter Master Calgar's voice deepened, "Captain Cassius, you must clearly inform Sergeant Karl that I am approving a 'relationship,' not allowing him to neglect his duties! He is first, and always, a warrior of Ultramar, a Sergeant of the Ultramarines First Company! He must prioritize executing orders and completing missions, and absolutely must not let personal matters interfere with public duty! There can be no compromise on this point!"

"Yes, Chapter Master Calgar!" Captain Cassius immediately responded.

"Secondly," Chapter Master Calgar's gaze was like a hawk's, "this matter is to be known only within the Chapter, limited to a very small circle of core personnel. You, I, and perhaps Lieutenant Golden—no one else. Strictly no external communication! Especially when we reach the Connaris Sector and make contact with the Hero of Connaris and his forces, or even other Imperial forces that may be present, absolute secrecy is paramount! Once this information leaks, the consequences will be unimaginable!"

"Understood!" Captain Cassius was well aware of the stakes.

"Finally, and most importantly." Chapter Master Calgar leaned forward slightly, the oppressive feeling more intense than ever, "You must make Sergeant Karl clearly understand that this 'tacit approval' from the Chapter has its limits! If, unfortunately, the Inquisition, especially the Ordo Xenos, learns of this matter, then the Ultramarines Chapter will not, and cannot, openly defy the Imperium for the sake of the two of them! At that time, they will need to face the wrath of the Inquisition alone. He must be fully aware of this and prepare to deal with it... or bear the consequences."

This was the most cruel, yet also the most realistic, warning. The Chapter could offer limited protection, but it could not challenge the fundamental legal institutions of the Imperium for the sake of a few individuals.

Captain Cassius nodded heavily: "I understand, Chapter Master Calgar. I will convey your warning, word for word, to Sergeant Karl. He... is already somewhat prepared for this."

Chapter Master Calgar looked deeply at Captain Cassius, as if to confirm whether he truly understood the risks involved. Finally, he waved his hand, his tone returning to its usual efficiency:

"Go. Handle this matter quickly. The fleet will exit the Warp in less than three standard hours. The Hero of Connaris and the 2nd Company are waiting to rendezvous with us in the Connaris Sector. I do not wish for this matter to affect the upcoming vital mission."

"Yes, Chapter Master Calgar!" Captain Cassius saluted solemnly once more, this time filled with the gratitude of relief. He said no more, turned, and left the Chapter Master's office with a lighter, yet still steady, stride than when he arrived.

The heavy metal door closed behind him, sealing the solemnity of the office and the momentous decision just made within.

Captain Cassius walked down the corridor on his way back, feeling much lighter, even though the road ahead was still fraught with hidden worries. At least, the most difficult hurdle had passed, and he had achieved a result far exceeding expectations. He couldn't help but admire Chapter Master Marius Calgar's courage and foresight, capable of upholding principles while adapting to circumstances, making decisions that were more aligned with reality and humanity. This, perhaps, was the silent wind of change that Primarch Roboute Guilliman's return had brought to the Chapter.

He did not delay, immediately connecting to Sergeant Karl's channel via the internal communicator.

"Sergeant Karl."

"Captain!" Sergeant Karl's voice immediately came from the other end of the communication, with a hint of undetectable tension.

Captain Cassius did not beat around the bush, stating directly: "I just came out of the Chapter Master's office."

He paused, sensing the sudden held breath on the other end of the communication.

"The Chapter Master... agreed."

"...!" There was a long silence on the other end of the communication, but Captain Cassius could imagine Sergeant Karl's expression, a mix of shock and joy, at that moment.

"However," Captain Cassius's tone instantly became extremely serious, conveying Chapter Master Calgar's three warnings to Sergeant Karl, word for word and clearly, especially the last one concerning the Inquisition.

"...I understand, Captain." When Sergeant Karl's voice sounded again, it had returned to its usual steady tone, but the determination within it was deeper, "Thank you, Captain! And please, thank Chapter Master Calgar on my behalf! Your kindness, I, Gaius, will never forget! I will engrave Chapter Master Calgar's warnings in my heart, and I will never bring shame to the Chapter because of me, nor will I ever... let Ms. Kolaesa be harmed."

"Remember your promise, Sergeant Karl." Captain Cassius said finally, "Alright, hurry up, the fleet will arrive soon. Stay vigilant, complete the mission."

"Yes, Captain!"

The communication cut off.

Captain Cassius put down the communicator, letting out a long sigh of relief. This matter, at least for now, had a resolution. He looked up at the bizarre, rapidly receding Warp phenomenon outside the corridor's viewport, his heart filled with emotion.

The Imperium is changing, and so is the Chapter. Perhaps, one day in the future, such cross-species connections will no longer require such careful, precarious handling. But at least for now, for Sergeant Karl and Ms. Kolaesa, they had been granted an opportunity to cautiously protect each other in the shadows.

And this, in this dark and brutal galaxy, was already nothing short of a miracle.

Chapter Master Marius Calgar sat alone on the obsidian throne, the heavy door closing behind him, isolating the departing figure of First Company Captain Cassius. The office returned to its solemn silence, with only the almost inaudible hum of the air circulation system.

However, Chapter Master Calgar's heart was far from as calm as it appeared. His deep gaze swept across the empty hall, slowly settling on the most prominent wall behind the throne. There, hung a massive and exquisite portrait—the figure in the painting was clad in power armor interwoven with azure and gold, crowned with a laurel wreath, his face possessing both the wisdom of a scholar and the resolve of a warrior, holding a scepter and a sword symbolizing wisdom and power. He was the Primarch of the Thirteenth Legion, the creator of Ultramar, the leader and father of the Ultramarines—Primarch Roboute Guilliman.

The Primarch's gaze in the portrait was peaceful and resolute, as if piercing through ten millennia of time, still gazing upon the realm he had personally built and placed great hopes upon, gazing upon his loyal sons.

Chapter Master Calgar gazed at the Primarch's portrait, his heart a mix of emotions. The decision he had just made, concerning the fate of an ordinary Sergeant and an xenos female, represented far more than it seemed on the surface. It was not merely a tacit approval of a relationship that crossed boundaries, but a subtle and daring balance struck between ten millennia of Imperial tradition and the increasingly complex reality of the galaxy.

"My Lord Primarch..." Chapter Master Calgar whispered silently in his heart, with a hint of imperceptible inquiry and emotion, "Is this... truly what you would wish to see? To see your sons form such deep connections with former enemies? To see the warriors of Ultramar, while upholding their duties, also begin to embrace emotions we once considered taboo?"

He recalled the various changes Primarch Roboute Guilliman had brought since his return from slumber. The Primarch did not stubbornly cling to tradition; he reformed the Deathwatch, strengthened cooperation with various factions, and even undertook drastic reforms of the Imperium's rigid bureaucracy. Primarch Roboute Guilliman saw the brutality and reality of the galaxy, understanding that mere rejection and hatred could not cope with the increasingly severe threats; survival required more flexibility and... inclusivity.

"Perhaps..." Chapter Master Calgar thought, "in your superhuman wisdom, the boundaries of species are not always insurmountable chasms. Emotional connections, under specific circumstances, might also become a bridge for... understanding and coexistence?"

He could not be sure how the Primarch would judge his decision today. Would he commend his pragmatism and adaptability? Or would he rebuke him for shaking the pure tenets of the Adeptus Astartes? But as Chapter Master, as the Regent of Ultramar, he had to make decisions based on the current reality, for the future of the Chapter, and for every warrior under his command. Sergeant Karl was a loyal and excellent Sergeant, and Ms. Kolaesa had shown determination and courage that transcended species. In Chapter Master Calgar's view, giving them a chance, while controlling risks as much as possible, was not a betrayal of tradition, but a deeper interpretation of "guardianship" and "responsibility" in a new era.

"Regardless, the decision has been made." Chapter Master Calgar withdrew his gaze, pushing the turbulent thoughts back into his heart. He had more important matters to attend to: the fleet's voyage, the defense of the Connaris Sector, and the meeting with the Hero of Connaris... these were the current priorities.

He refocused his attention on the holographic star chart and data streams before him, beginning to review the preliminary rendezvous plan for the Connaris Sector that Captain Cassius had previously submitted.

Time quietly slipped away in focused work. After an unknown duration, the timer built into the desk emitted a soft, continuous chime—the fleet was about to exit the Warp and return to real space.

Chapter Master Calgar's spirits lifted, and he immediately connected to the bridge: "Captain Lilith, report status."

"Chapter Master Calgar," Captain Lilith's efficient voice responded, "Warp engine power is steadily decreasing, the Navigator reports a stable reality anchor, estimated three minutes until exiting Warp transition and arriving at the designated coordinates on the outskirts of the Connaris system."

"Very good. Maintain vigilance, establish contact with the Hero of Connaris and the 2nd Company as planned."

"Understood!"

Chapter Master Calgar ended the communication, stood up from the throne, and prepared to go to the bridge to personally oversee this critical moment. However, just as he stepped off the dais—

"Bzzzz—!!!"

A violent and sudden tremor instantly shook the entire Macragge's Honour! This was not the normal spatial disturbance at the end of a Warp jump, but a shock caused by some external energy impact or a drastic change in a gravity field! Simultaneously, piercing, highest-level alarm sirens roared like startled beasts, instantly echoing through every corner of the battleship!

"Warning! Large-scale real space energy signature detected!"

"Warning! Fleet surrounded by unknown forces!"

"Warning! Multiple high-energy signatures locked onto this vessel!"

A series of urgent and cold mechanical voice alerts blared frantically through the ship's broadcast system.

Chapter Master Calgar's expression suddenly changed! What was happening?! According to the plan, they should have appeared in an uninhabited area on the outskirts of the Connaris system, waiting for the rendezvous with the Hero of Connaris. How could they be surrounded immediately upon exiting the Warp?!

He didn't hesitate, immediately rushing to the bridge at top speed. As he stepped into the cathedral-like, magnificent bridge, filled with various control panels and holographic projections, the sight before him made the battle-hardened Chapter Master gasp.

The view outside the main observation window was no longer the empty starfield he had anticipated.

The massive Ultramarines fleet had seemingly stumbled into a giant net that had already been cast!

From all directions, menacingly painted black warships, the iconic color of the Inquisition, densely filled the void! Interspersed among them were numerous Imperial Navy standard battleships and cruisers, forming a tight, overtly hostile encirclement. The weapon ports of all the warships gleamed with stored energy, firmly locked onto the Ultramarines fleet, which had just emerged from the Warp and had not yet fully deployed its formation!

This wasn't even the most unsettling part. Clustered among the black warships, a vessel of matte grey, ancient and mysterious in its design, emitting an unsettling psychic fluctuation, hovered silently like a ghost in the void. Its presence seemed to dim the surrounding starlight.

"Grey Knights..." Calgar squeezed the name through his teeth, his heart sinking. Even the Emperor's most mysterious demon hunters, the Grey Knights, specialized in handling the most dangerous supernatural threats, had been deployed! This was absolutely not a good sign!

Captain Lilith hurried to meet him, her usually calm face now etched with anxiety and solemnity: "Chapter Master! The situation is dire! We were surrounded the moment we exited the Warp! It's the Ordo Xenos fleet! The scale is far beyond our expectations! They... they seem to have known we would appear here!"

Calgar's ominous premonition was confirmed. He forced himself to quickly calm down, his mind racing. The Ordo Xenos... such a large-scale deployment, even involving the Grey Knights, meant their objective would not be small. Connecting this to the "small matter" he had just approved, he immediately realized the problem likely originated much earlier—

It was those eight thousand Aeldari children!

The news of the Chapter sheltering a large number of Aeldari refugees had, after all, leaked out! Moreover, judging by their posture, it was clear they came with ill intent, definitely not for peaceful negotiations or a simple investigation!

"Captain Lilith, secure the bridge. No firing without my command, but maintain maximum defensive posture!" Calgar ordered swiftly, his voice steady and imbued with unquestionable authority.

"Yes, Chapter Master!"

Calgar then connected to the fleet-wide broadcast. His voice, carried through the communication network, reached every Ultramarines warship, every Astartes Brother's ear:

"All units, attention! This is Chapter Master Marius Calgar!"

"The fleet has encountered an illegal interception by the Ordo Xenos! Their intentions are unclear, but they are highly hostile!"

"I order: First Company, Third Company, Fourth Company, immediately fully arm yourselves and enter maximum combat readiness, prepared for boarding actions or defensive boarding combat at any moment!"

"Fifth Company, immediately move forward to protect the supply ships housing the Aeldari refugees, ensuring their absolute safety! Without my direct command, any attempt to approach will be considered a hostile act!"

"All other companies, immediately return to your respective Strike Cruisers, activate all defensive systems, form a defensive formation, and await further instructions!"

"Repeat, do not fire first without my command, but make all preparations for battle! For Ultramar!"

The orders were clear and decisive, instantly spreading throughout the fleet. The Ultramarines, who had been somewhat agitated by the sudden encirclement, quickly regained order and calm upon hearing the Chapter Master's voice, beginning to operate efficiently like precise war machines.

Calgar himself strode towards the command chair in the center of the bridge, his gaze sternly fixed on the main screen displaying the massive, hostile fleet. He knew a storm was now inevitable.

Just then, on the main communication screen of the bridge, a forcefully connected signal flickered, accompanied by an ear-piercing static. Captain Lilith looked at Calgar, who nodded.

The screen lit up, revealing a face. It was an old man with a gaunt face but eyes burning with fanaticism like glowing embers. He wore an Inquisitor's robe adorned with skulls and scrolls; it was Grand Inquisitor Herman Voss of the Ordo Xenos.

As soon as Grand Inquisitor Voss's image stabilized, he let out an angry roar at Calgar, his hoarse yet penetrating voice like a pronouncement of judgment:

"Marius Calgar! You traitor to the Imperium! The shame of Ultramar!"

His voice trembled slightly with emotion, the fanaticism in his eyes almost spilling from the screen:

"You dare to openly defy the Emperor's teachings and collude with foul xenos! You not only secretly conspired with the Aeldari, but you audaciously hid thousands of xenos whelps within the Emperor's sacred warships! You have desecrated the purity and honor of the Adeptus Astartes! You have stained the Ultramarines' ten-thousand-year legacy!"

Voss took a deep breath, as if gathering strength, and issued his final ultimatum:

"Now! In the name of the Holy Inquisition, I order you to immediately disarm all your warships, open all your hatches, and submit to the Inquisition's boarding inspection and interrogation! Then, under my personal supervision, you and your Chapter must immediately embark on a century-long, most arduous Penitent Crusade to cleanse yourselves of the abominable xenos filth!"

"Otherwise!" He suddenly raised his voice, his finger almost piercing the screen, "I shall hereby declare the Ultramarines Chapter as traitors to humanity and the Emperor! All your warships will immediately execute... Purification Protocols! Eradicating you fallen ones, along with that xenos filth, completely from the Emperor's star-realm!"

Meanwhile, inside Gaius's chamber i-10-a, the atmosphere was a rare moment of warmth and tranquility.

Gaius sat on the bed, Ms. Kolaesa nestled in his arms, recounting in a soft tone some interesting anecdotes from her childhood on the Ark World of Aethel's Tear: how she secretly learned combat skills only to be discovered by her mentor, how she and her sister Koreni chased shimmering psychic entities in the garden... Gaius listened quietly, feeling the softness and dependence of the delicate body in his arms, the part of his heart that had melted for her seemed to grow even warmer.

However, this brief tranquility was abruptly shattered by a rapid and violent knocking at the door!

"Knock knock knock! Gaius! Open up! Something big has happened!" It was Dorian's characteristic loud voice, filled with unprecedented urgency.

Gaius frowned, immediately got up, and quickly walked to the door to open it. Outside stood Dorian, his face full of anxiety, speaking so fast he was almost flying, and beside him, Luna, her expression solemn and silent.

"Gaius! This is bad! This is bad!" Dorian almost screamed, "The Ordo Xenos! Those madmen somehow got wind of the fact that we're harboring Aeldari children! Now their fleet has us cornered outside the Connaris sector! The display is terrifying, even a Grey Knights' warship has come!"

Like a bolt from the blue, Gaius felt the blood drain from his body in that instant, his heart clenching. His worst fear had come true so quickly, and in such a violent manner!

"The Chapter Master has already given orders! First Company, Third Company, Fourth Company are fully armed, Fifth Company is going to protect those Aeldari children, and the other companies are heading to the Strike Cruisers to prepare for a head-on confrontation with them!" Dorian continued rapidly, "You better get ready! Protect your wife! I need to go put on my Terminator armor immediately! Damn it, these Inquisition bastards, if they dare to cause trouble, I'll smash them one by one like a First Company Captain!"

Dorian finished speaking, not waiting for Gaius's response, and turned to sprint towards the armory, his heavy footsteps thudding down the corridor.

Luna glanced at Ms. Kolaesa, whose face had instantly turned pale, then looked at Gaius and added succinctly: "The situation is bad, prepare for the worst." She then quickly turned and left; she needed to ensure the safety of the Tech-Sergeant teams and critical ship systems.

Gaius closed the door, turned around, and saw Ms. Kolaesa had risen from the bed, her delicate body trembling uncontrollably, the color drained from her beautiful face, and her purple eyes filled with extreme fear and helplessness.

"The Inquisition... the Ordo Xenos... are they... are they here to capture me and my people?" Her voice was tearful, tears instantly filling her eyes, "My people... what will happen to them? Will they be in danger...?"

Seeing her like this, Gaius's heart felt as if it were fiercely clutched. He quickly stepped forward, extended his arms, and tightly embraced her trembling, cold body.

"Don't be afraid, Ms. Kolaesa, don't be afraid." Gaius's voice was low and firm, trying to dispel her fear with his composure, "With me here, no one will harm you or your people."

He gently patted her back, his tone unwavering: "The Chapter Master has already ordered Fifth Company to protect the supply ships; they will be fine. I promise you."

Ms. Kolaesa raised her tear-filled face, looking at Gaius's resolute eyes. Some of the fear in her heart seemed to dissipate, but she still clutched his arm tightly, as if it were her only support.

Gaius knew time was short; he had to immediately go to the armory to don his power armor and rendezvous with his company brothers. He cupped Ms. Kolaesa's face in his hands, forcing her to look into his eyes, then slowly and solemnly knelt down, gently pressing his forehead against her smooth forehead.

This was an extremely intimate and comforting gesture, stemming from fragments of his distant, mortal memories.

Their foreheads touched, their breaths mingling. Gaius could clearly feel her slight trembling and the coldness of her skin.

"Listen, Ms. Kolaesa," Gaius's voice was incredibly gentle, yet carried a promise of steel, "I must now fulfill my duty, to protect this warship, to protect Ultramar, and... to protect you."

"You stay here, don't go anywhere, lock the door. This is a core area of the Macragge's Honour, relatively safe."

"Wait for me to return." He gazed into her eyes, enunciating each word, "I promise, I will return safely."

Ms. Kolaesa looked at the close-up, reassuring azure eyes, felt the warmth from his forehead, and heard his steady, powerful promise. The panic in her heart miraculously subsided considerably. She nodded vigorously, her voice still choked, but with an added trust: "I... I'll wait for you. You must be careful..."

Gaius gave her one last forceful hug, then resolutely stood up, gave her a deep look, and turned to stride out of the chamber. The metal door slid shut behind him, cutting off Ms. Kolaesa's worried gaze.

Soon after Gaius's departure, a rhythmic and heavy thud of footsteps approached the area where chamber i-10-a was located. It was the Chapter Master's direct Honor Guard, ordered to clear non-combat personnel and important areas from the core sector, ensuring critical zones would not be interfered with during any potential boarding actions.

An Honour Guard Warrior paused briefly outside Gaius's chamber door, briefly informing Ms. Kolaesa via internal comms to stay inside and remain quiet, then, along with his squadmates, moved like a mobile steel bulwark, guarding the passages leading to the bridge and other vital areas.

Meanwhile, the ship's internal broadcast sounded again, mobilizing various combat units. Large numbers of Ultramarines, from regular tactical squad members and Destroyer squads to heavy-armored Terminator veterans, poured out of their respective chambers and assembly areas like a blue torrent of steel, marching with neat and swift strides towards hangars, defensive decks, and other designated battle stations. The hum of power armor servo systems, the clang of metal boots on the deck, the concise and powerful commands of the Sergeants... intertwined, composing a tense symphony of impending battle.

And within that closed chamber, Ms. Kolaesa hugged herself tightly, curled up in the corner of the bed, listening to the unsettling footsteps and broadcast outside the door, her heart filled with worry for Gaius's safety and fear for the fate of her people. She could only replay Gaius's parting promise again and again to sustain herself through the long and agonizing wait.

The storm had arrived. The conflict of loyalty and faith was about to erupt in the most intense sparks in this unfamiliar star-realm.
