Chapter 13 - CHOSEN STRANGERS.

The system failed to issue Tony any sort of alert this time around.

As he sat there, halfway through a bowl of cereal that had long since gone stale, a sudden chime reverberated violently in his mind. The startling sound shattered his moment of peace, causing his spoon to slip from his grasp and clatter onto the countertop, while milk splattered across the surface in an unceremonious spray.

[Main Quest Update.]

[Mandatory Hunt Mission Initiated.]

[Objective: Eliminate 3 Shadow Entities.]

[Location: Abandoned Train Yard.]

[Participants: 4.]

Tony's body turned rigid as the implications of the notification sank in. "...Participants?" he muttered, his voice barely above a whisper, as a sense of unease coiled tightly within him.

The system's unyielding, mechanical voice continued to drone on, showing no sign of compassion or understanding.

[You are not alone.]

In that moment, reality itself seemed to shatter into countless pieces, akin to a delicate pane of glass that has been struck with an unyielding force. The familiarity of his kitchen faded away in an instant, leaving him disoriented and gasping for breath. And just like that, when he finally managed to reopen his eyes, he found himself standing on a rough patch of gravel, in a place entirely different from where he had just been.

The night air was thick with rust and oil. All around him loomed train cars—rows of hulking metal beasts gone cold, their windows shattered, their paint eaten away by time. Weeds sprouted between the tracks, tall enough to brush his knees.

And he wasn't alone.

Three figures stood scattered across the yard.

The first was a tall man in a leather jacket, hair cropped short, fists clenched at his sides. His stance screamed brawler.

The second was a girl no older than Tony, hoodie drawn tight over her head, eyes flicking around with sharp suspicion. A hunting knife glinted in her grip.

The last was an older man, maybe late thirties, with a haunted look and a length of rebar wrapped in duct tape for a weapon.

All of them wore the same expression Tony felt twisting in his own gut—fear wrapped in confusion, barely held together by desperation.

The system chimed.

[Survive together. Or die alone.]

For a long moment, none of them spoke. The silence was heavy, broken only by the distant groan of metal in the wind.

Finally, the leather-jacket guy stepped forward. "So it's true. I'm not crazy. You all… you see it too, right?" His eyes darted between them, searching for recognition.

The girl in the hoodie snorted. "See what? That we're trapped in some death game? Yeah, thanks, Sherlock."

Tony swallowed hard, raising his hands in a placating gesture. "Okay, okay, let's not—uh—rip each other apart before the monsters show up. The system said we're supposed to hunt three of them, right?"

The older man laughed bitterly. It was a hollow, broken sound. "Hunt. Like we've got a choice. Like we're hunters." He shook his head, muttering to himself.

Tony felt a pang of recognition. That was him, just days ago. Scared, disbelieving, ready to give up before the fight began.

Now he couldn't afford to be.

A shriek tore through the yard.

The group froze, every head whipping toward the sound. It was inhuman, jagged—like steel scraping against stone.

The shadows were coming.

Tony's dagger pulsed in his hand, silver veins glowing faintly. The girl's knife flickered with a weak red shimmer. The man with rebar shifted his stance nervously.

And then Tony realized.

They had systems too.

Three entities emerged from between the rusted train cars. Their bodies were skeletal smoke, limbs elongated, faces blank masks with pits of pale fire where eyes should have been.

They crawled along the sides of the cars like insects, then dropped down onto the tracks with a thud that shook the gravel.

Tony's breath caught.

"Three of them," he whispered. "Of course."

The leather-jacket guy cracked his knuckles, smirking despite the fear in his eyes. "Guess we've got our targets."

The girl rolled her shoulders. "Don't get in my way."

The older man muttered a prayer under his breath, gripping the rebar tighter.

Tony exhaled, dagger trembling in his hand. The silver light pulsed harder, syncing with the hammering of his heart.

The first shadow lunged.

The group exploded into chaos.

The leather-jacket man met it head-on, his fist glowing faintly as he swung. The blow connected, smoke splattering like tar. The creature reeled back, shrieking.

The girl darted low, her knife carving into the second shadow's leg. The blade sizzled as it cut, leaving behind a trail of red light.

The older man swung his rebar wildly, barely keeping the third at bay. His strikes were clumsy but desperate, each one buying a few more seconds of life.

Tony hesitated for only a moment. Then he ran forward, dagger raised high.

He aimed for the second shadow—the one the girl had staggered. His blade sank deep into its chest. The creature convulsed, and Tony twisted the dagger, silver veins flaring bright.

Smoke exploded outward as the core shattered. The entity collapsed into nothingness.

The system chimed.

[Kill Confirmed.]

Tony stumbled back, gasping, but the girl's wide-eyed stare caught him off guard. For a moment, her gaze lingered not on him—but on his weapon.

Before either of them could speak, the fight surged on.

The leather-jacket man drove his glowing fist straight through the first shadow's head. It burst apart, smoke scattering into the night.

Two down. One left.

The last shadow shrieked, throwing the older man back against a train car. He crumpled with a cry of pain, rebar skittering across the gravel.

Tony's Shadow Sense flared instinctively. The monster's presence pressed against him like a weight, hollow and jagged. He grit his teeth, sprinted forward, and leapt.

The dagger pierced its chest, silver light burning like fire.

The creature writhed, shrieked, and then shattered into nothing.

Silence fell.

For a long time, the only sound was their ragged breathing.

The system's chime echoed:

[Objective Completed.]

[Reward: +75 XP. Random Item Acquired: Shadow Fragment.]

Out of nowhere, a mesmerizing black shard emerged in Tony's grasp, its surface pulsating softly with an eerie darkness. The shard felt surprisingly cold to the touch, and despite its relatively small size, it weighed more than he anticipated, giving it an air of significance.

Though he couldn't determine exactly what this mysterious object was, he couldn't help but notice the immediate intensity of the girl's gaze as it locked onto the fragment in his hand. Her sharp, piercing eyes seemed to harbor a wealth of understanding that he lacked, and for a fleeting moment, he found himself questioning the depth of its power.

Before anyone had the chance to utter a single word in response, the system's voice broke the tension, softly whispering a final, cryptic message:

[This was only the beginning.]

In an instant, the bustling train yard around them faded away, dissolving into nothingness as the world around Tony shifted dramatically.

He suddenly found himself standing in the familiar confines of his room, the black shard still gripped tightly in his palm. To his surprise, the dagger he had been using moments before was now emitting a soft, persistent glow, contrasting sharply with the darkness of the object he held.

With his heart racing in his chest, Tony fixated on the shard, his mind a whirlwind of questions and possibilities.

What was this object? What powers did it hold? And more importantly, what implications did it have for him and his journey?

As he pondered these thoughts, a profound realization washed over him: he wasn't alone in this. There were others out there, others who were just like him, embarking on their own quests filled with mystery and danger.

This realization shifted everything for him; it opened up a new realm of possibilities that he had only begun to fathom. The adventure that lay ahead promised to be both thrilling and perilous, and Tony felt a sense of determination ignite within him. He was ready to embrace whatever was coming next.
