Chapter 288 - Chapter 288: The Assassination of Midgard

Although Midgard made it sound easy, the situation back then had definitely been dangerous.

Otherwise, with Midgard's skill, there was no way she would have failed to throw away the Bitterthorn in time after it had taken four spells and ended up getting caught in the blast herself.

Only then did Leonard realize just how poorly the defensive branch of the enhancement tree matched with the Symbiosis talent.

When plants fought on their own, self-destruction was their final form of attack.

But for symbiotic plants, stability was the most important thing.

Strapping a bomb to yourself did sound pretty cool, but if the situation was not suitable, then that bomb stopped being cool very quickly and started looking a little stupid.

"My fault. Giving a symbiotic plant a self-destruct ability was not a good idea. I should have blocked that off," Leonard said.

"Don't say that. This thing was awesome. If it weren't for that self-destruct, I wouldn't have been able to kill those people," Midgard said carelessly.

"Anyway, I'll keep working on the symbiotic plant side of things. But you... how exactly did you get hurt?" Leonard asked.

On the way in, he had already noticed the werewolf wizards. They looked tense, but none of them were injured.

Which meant Midgard was the only one hurt?

"Didn't I already tell you? I got hurt in a fight," Midgard repeated.

"Midgard, you're not cut out for lying." Leonard sighed. "Your logical thinking abilities don't support that kind of behavior."

"Hey! What's that supposed to mean? Are you looking down on me?" Midgard demanded.

"Hmph. If it were really just a fight, then how come only you got hurt while the other werewolf wizards are completely fine?" Leonard shook his head. "You were assassinated."

Midgard fell silent for a while before finally saying, "Fine. I won't hide it from you anymore. Someone really did try to assassinate me, while I was out shopping."

"Tsk. You go shopping without bringing anyone with you?" Leonard asked.

"I was going shopping, not smashing up shops. Would it make sense to bring a whole crowd?" Midgard actually sounded a little wronged. "I really didn't expect anyone would come to assassinate me."

"Do you know who did it?" Leonard asked.

"No. All unfamiliar faces. They didn't seem like people from Knockturn Alley. Just like I said, it was probably outsiders stirring things up," Midgard said.

"Outsiders..." Leonard's instincts told him there was probably something wrong here. He had no idea why this year had suddenly become so full of trouble. "How did they know when you were going out alone?"

"I've never exactly kept my outings a secret." Midgard spread her hands.

Leonard pressed a hand to his forehead.

"Anyway, lie low for a while. Stop thinking about going shopping and stay in the settlement," Leonard said. "The Ministry of Magic has gone crazy lately too. If anything happens in Knockturn Alley, they'll definitely go after the werewolf wizards."

"We're all honest businessmen. None of us caused any trouble." Midgard sighed. "Sigh... Leonard, I feel so tired."

"Tired? This has only just begun. There's still a long way to go," Leonard said casually.

"At the beginning, I just wanted everyone to live a little better. I never thought things would get this big. And now, even if I want to get out, I can't." Midgard sounded helpless.

"Then find a successor. They're all werewolves anyway, so just pick someone without too many selfish motives," Leonard said.

"Easy for you to say. How could I possibly trust someone that easily?" Midgard shook her head. "Forget about me. What about you? Anything going on over there?"

"Yes. And it's not a small matter." Leonard's face turned serious. "Have you heard of Raven?"

"Raven? Never heard of it." Midgard shook her head.

"This organization seems to be looking for a special group called bloodline wizards recently. Their Senator has a kind of crow-related magic. Those crows can detect non-human blood mixed into a wizard's bloodline," Leonard explained briefly.

"Bloodline wizards?" Midgard let out a cold laugh. "Then why aren't they looking for werewolves? But bloodline wizards have nothing to do with us, do they?"

"I'm afraid they do. Claudia and I already ran into them once. Claudia scraped her knee, and the blood that came out caught their attention." Leonard said, "That person noticed something different about Claudia because of the crow's warning."

"What?" The moment Claudia was involved, Midgard's face turned savage.

Claudia, who had been gently touching the wounds on Midgard's body, was so startled that she backed away a few steps and nearly fell.

"Don't change expression so fast. You're scaring Claudia," Leonard said as he caught Claudia in his arms.

"Ah, sorry, Claudia." Midgard looked apologetic as she patted Claudia on the head. "Big sister prepared lots of tasty things in the room, and your doll is in there too. Go play for a bit."

"Okay." Claudia nodded obediently and walked into the room.

Only after Claudia had gone inside did Midgard's fierce expression return. The speed of that face change was honestly amazing.

"And then? Where did that person go?" Midgard was very clearly ready to kill.

"Listen to yourself, as if you're the only one who cares about Claudia." Leonard spread his hands. "I killed him. Scattered the ashes too. Including that crow."

"That's good, then." Midgard let out a breath of relief. "But we still need to keep an eye on this organization. Bloodline wizards, huh..."

...

"Speaking of this organization, I met a family during all this," Leonard mentioned Lehende and told Midgard about his interactions with the Delacour family.

Of course, he left out certain awkward incidents.

"Lehende Delacour... I've heard that name before. A pretty famous guy. So that Raven organization actually dared to make a move against a public figure. They've got some nerve," Midgard said in surprise.

"That's exactly what makes this so troublesome. My guess is that after they capture people, they use some method to control them and then release them. To everyone else, the people who were taken only disappeared for a while, or maybe showed no obvious abnormalities at all. But in reality, they've already quietly become Raven's people." Leonard's face was serious.

"That sounds like some kind of disease with a really long incubation period," Midgard said.

"Exactly. So we need to be extremely careful. We do not even know whether there are already some of their people among the werewolf wizards," Leonard said.

"Probably not, right? Werewolf wizards don't fall under the category of bloodline wizards," Midgard said.

"Not necessarily. The situation with werewolf wizards is special. In any case, we need to treat everything with suspicion," Leonard warned.

"But... there's no real way to guard against that," Midgard said helplessly.

The target range was simply too broad. The entire werewolf wizard group fell under suspicion. If they really tried to take precautions on that scale, the werewolf settlement would probably descend into chaos.
