Mai Sakurajima's eyes fluttered open.
The first thing she saw was Draconis, already sitting up beside her. His bare torso was all sculpted muscle and flawless skin—enough to make any girl jealous. His black hair stuck up in messy tufts, lending him a lazy, irresistible charm.
The memory of last night's pleasure made Mai's cheeks warm. She tried not to smile, but Draconis's gaze was so direct it made her squirm.
"Why are you staring at me like that?" she murmured, her voice soft. No matter how close they'd become, being so openly admired by her boyfriend still made her self-conscious.
Draconis tilted his head, eyes narrowing in puzzled thought. He muttered under his breath, "That look… and those marks I left… She's definitely my Mai, but why…"
Mai blinked, confused. "What are you talking about?"
She sat up, then realized with a start just how exposed she was. Flushing, she yanked the blanket up to cover herself.
Draconis's expression grew complicated, a mix of confusion and concern. "You… might want to check the mirror," he said quietly.
Mai frowned, uncertain. Then she caught a glimpse of golden hair draped over her shoulder—hair that wasn't hers.
Heart pounding, she hurried to the wardrobe mirror.
And froze.
The reflection staring back at her was Nodoka Toyohama—her little sister.
But… I'm Mai Sakurajima.
Shock crashed over her. No wonder Draconis had looked at her so strangely.
She stared at her borrowed body, noting the faint purplish marks on her skin—evidence of last night's passion, still visible.
But the face, the hair, every detail… was undeniably Nodoka's.
How… How is this possible?
Her mind spun out of control, but instinct took over. She grabbed clothes from the wardrobe, wrapped herself up, and shot a glare at Draconis. "Don't look."
Draconis just shrugged, turning away. He couldn't help thinking, a little wryly, that it was far too late for modesty—he'd already seen, touched, and experienced everything.
What the hell was going on?
He dressed quickly, mind racing. Mai, meanwhile, had already regained her composure—years of dealing with the supernatural, and a devilish boyfriend, had made her quick on the uptake. Still, she couldn't help feeling rattled at having shown her sister's body to Draconis, even by accident.
What a mess…
Draconis finished dressing, calm now. "Looks like it's just your appearance that changed," he reasoned aloud. "Everything else—your soul, your mannerisms—still feels like Mai Sakurajima."
His words made Mai's face darken as she remembered the marks he'd left. On her own skin, she wouldn't care, but now… she felt a pang of guilt for her sister.
"Don't say it like that," she grumbled.
Draconis blinked, helpless. "I mean your soul contract. I can still sense you—Mai—so I know it's you, even if you look like Nodoka."
That was a relief. If her soul had swapped as well, she'd be devastated.
"So what's going on? Did you do something?" Mai demanded.
Draconis threw up his hands. "I wish I had that kind of magic. I don't know any illusion spells—and this isn't an illusion anyway."
He arched an eyebrow. "And even if I could, why would I? My wife Mai is the cutest, most beautiful girl in the world. I'd never want to change that."
He paused, then added, "Of course, I love everything about you—inside and out."
Mai rolled her eyes. "Now's not the time for love confessions."
She stared at the mirror again, every detail of her sister's face staring back. It was uncanny.
"Wait—if I look like Nodoka now, what about the real Nodoka?"
Draconis's eyes widened. They both imagined the same scenario.
A high-pitched scream echoed from Nodoka's bedroom.
"Wha—WHAAAAAAT?!"
Draconis winced, trying to distance himself from the shriek. Just from that sound, he could feel Nodoka's shock and disbelief flooding the apartment.
Honestly, that was the normal reaction. Mai's calmness was almost superhuman.
That's my Mai, he thought with a crooked smile.
Mai ignored his look. She rushed out of the bedroom, footsteps quick and determined.
Draconis followed, hands in his pockets, face unreadable.
In the living room, Nodoka burst out in a panic—except now she looked exactly like Mai Sakurajima.
She spotted Mai (in Nodoka's body) and gasped. "Sis—Mai?!"
"…It's me. Nodoka, try to calm down," Mai said gently, doing her best to sound reassuring despite her own nerves.
Draconis strolled out, taking in the scene. Nodoka—now wearing Mai's face—gawked at him. "What are you doing here?!"
He gave her a long look, confirming her new appearance, and sighed. "Let's sit down and talk this through."
Nodoka stared, speechless.
