Chapter 5 - Chapter 5: System Awakened

Feng went back home and took a nap to relax his muscles. When he woke up, a system popped up in front of him. "What is this thing?" He tapped the screen and found that there were tasks he had to finish in order to get a reward. He opened one of them and read through it.

Kill 100 goblins=100 EXP. There was a picture of the goblin on the lower side of the screen. It had green skin, golden eyes, and pointed ears like that of dwarves. "Are these monsters?" he wondered.

A notification popped up on the screen. Feng opened and read it: Quest time limit: 24 hours. Failure to complete the task within the given time will lead to your demise.

"Unbelievable!" His hand flew to his forehead. He stood up and paced back and forth. Then he checked his status again. He has 24 hours to finish the task, or he'll die. He'll die. He'll die. He'll die. He couldn't stop thinking about it.

"I don't want to die!" He exclaimed. His voice echoed across the hallway of the academy. The birds flew from the roofs of the building. He looked at it again and rubbed his eyes, hoping that it was just an illusion. But it was real. He'd die if he couldn't finish the task on time.

But he couldn't let that happen, not until he had avenged his parents. The system wanted him to kill those goblins, which meant it might be able to help him do what he desired. Finally, he decided to do the task.

Feng wanted to have a sword that he could use to kill those goblins and a shield that could protect him, but he had no money to buy those things, so he left empty-handed, but the guards at the gate didn't want to let him go outside, for it was dangerous. He'd need a higher-up to go with him, like a saint-level magician.

Kurt was right, Feng thought. He couldn't get outside like this. But Feng had something urgent to do. Even though he knew that it was risky to go outside, he couldn't stay at the academy and die without doing anything, so he found a way to escape the guards. He deceived them, saying that there was a giant monster standing behind them, and then he scuddled outside the gate.

"You brat! Come back here!" One of the guards exclaimed. He chased after Feng, but it was too late. The mischievous boy has already gotten away.

Feng stopped in front of the Uncharted Forest. His hands are on his knees as he catches his breath. He didn't have any idea which part of the country he was in. He looked up and saw a placard nailed to an oak tree. It warned him to take care of the dangerous creatures that might be lurking in the forest.

"Creepy," Feng thought, but he had to find those goblins and subjugate them before his time was over, so he started looking for them in the forest. The leaves rustled above him, and the birds were singing softly. He counted his footsteps and stopped when he heard a sound coming from the woods.

Suddenly, a huge boar came out from. It's holding bulky wood. Tusks protruding from its mouth. It growled when it saw Feng and attacked him. Scared, Feng ran as fast as he could. The boar chased after him until he arrived in front of a cabin in the middle of the woods. He knocked at the door, but nobody answered, so he pulled it open, entered inside, and locked it.

It's dark inside. Feng looked through the tiny hole and saw the big boar approaching. He fell on his back as it punched the door. But despite its age, the door stood still. The boar continued punching it and eventually stopped and went away, forgetting his food.

Feng took a deep breath, then he got surprised when someone flashed a flashlight in his face. He crawled back as the person moved close to him.

"Who are you?" She asked, moving his face close to Feng. She lighted up his face. "How did you get inside my house?"

"I... I'm so sorry," Feng apologized. "I didn't mean to trespass in your house. I was being chased by a boar."

"A boar, huh?" She stood up straight and put the flashlight on the table before opening the door. "There's no boar here," she said, stepping outside.

Feng stood up and followed the girl. The girl had curly black hair and wore a pointed hat. Feng didn't know what she was doing in this cabin in the middle of the forest.

"So," the girl faced Feng. "Aside from being chased by a boar, is there another reason why you're here?"

"I'm looking for goblins," Feng replied.

"Goblins?" She asked.

Feng described the looks of the goblins to the girl. The girl helped him with the location of the goblins. She accompanied him and introduced herself as Diana, a young witch. Her parents, among the villagers, died when those goblins attacked, so she set out to kill them.

"I'm sorry to hear that," Feng said.

"No, it's not your fault. Those goblins are the ones to be blamed, so if you're going to subjugate, I'm willing to go with you," Diana said. "May I know your name?"

"I'm Feng, Feng Xiao," Feng replied.

"Nice to meet you, Feng. Is there any particular reason why you want to kill those goblins?" Diana asked.

Feng hesitated to tell Diana about the system, for she might not believe it. "Nothing," Feng lied. "I was tasked by the Academy of the Saviors to kill them."

"The academy of the Saviors?" Diana asked. "I heard of that place. That's the place of the humans. They have joined forces to survive the monsters. You must be very strong that the academy entrusted you with such a dangerous quest."

"Not really." Feng scratched the back of his head and smiled awkwardly. He thought that he made a terrible mistake by lying to the witch.

A few moments later, they encounter a small group of goblins. Feng charged toward them, but before he could take them down, Diana already did. Diana used witchcraft as a range attack.

This is bad, Feng thought. If Diana keeps defeating the goblins, he won't be able to get any of them and won't be able to finish his task. He has to kill the next ones. But as they encountered another group of goblins, Diana killed them all again.

Frustrated, Feng exclaimed, "Just let me kill them!"

Diana laughed. "I'm sorry," she apologized. "I'll let you kill the next."
