Chapter 4 – Shadows of Betrayal

The next morning, sunlight felt wrong. The library seemed normal again, but the gemstone burned cold in Elena's bag.

Ethan (uneasy, whispering): "I didn't sleep a wink… I swear something was watching us last night."

Liam (grinning, trying to lighten the mood): "Maybe it's just your conscience… or ghosts love your face."

Elena shot him a glare, then opened the diary. A new page had appeared:

"The second key will test loyalty. Secrets are heavier than gold. Choose wisely, for shadows lie close."

Sophia (frowning at the map): "Shadows lie close… maybe someone among us can't be trusted?"

Ethan (stiffening): "Wait… you don't mean—"

A sudden knock at the library door startled them. No one was outside. Only a small envelope lay on the floor, sealed with red wax.

Elena (opening it): "It's a message… for us."

Inside, a single line was written in elegant, sharp handwriting:

"The path to the second key is hidden in the place where the sun never reaches. Only the brave survive."

Liam (grinning nervously): "Brave, huh? Sounds like Ethan should stay home."

Ethan (crossing his arms): "I'm staying, and you'll see why I'm not just 'brave.'"

Sophia examined the map and traced their route to a forgotten basement below the town museum—dark, dusty, and unused for decades.

Sophia (firmly): "That's where we go. The diary… it doesn't lie."

Night fell again. The friends reached the museum basement, flashlights cutting shadows into grotesque shapes. Every creak echoed like footsteps.

Elena (whispering): "I can't shake the feeling someone's watching us… someone who knows everything we do."

They found a locked door, its surface engraved with twisting symbols. Liam inserted the second key, but it didn't turn. The diary glowed, revealing a new riddle:

"Only when trust is unbroken,

Shall the lock awaken.

One heart must be pure,

The rest… forsaken."

The friends stared at each other, tension rising. Could one of them betray the others… or was the diary testing them in another way?

A sudden whisper echoed in the basement:

> "Choose wisely… or lose everything."

Their flashlights flickered. Shadows twisted around them, almost alive.
