Chapter 38 - Faint memory

*~Gabrielle's POV~*

I followed him, struggling to match his pace as he stormed through the halls. His grip on my wrist was tight—too tight—and it was beginning to hurt.

He stopped abruptly behind the High House, the air thick with tension. On a small table sat the lantern—the same one. He slammed it down, the sound echoing.

"Turn it on." He said sternly.

"What?" I blinked.

"I said, turn it on," he repeated, his voice low and deliberate.

My gaze darted from him to the lantern, my heart pounding. "Why? How did you even expect me to turn it on? I no longer have my powers."

His eyes burned into mine. "Come on, Gabrielle. I don't want excuses. I just need you to turn it on."

"I can't," I said quickly. "My mother forbade me from turning it on."

I didn't know how he'd react if he found out the truth, that I couldn't turn it on, that the very reason he marked me, the reason I was useful, was gone. My powers, the essence of the White Wolf—are gone.
