Chapter 298 - Chapter 298

The corridor widened as Noctis moved deeper beneath New York, and the coven around him changed from a route network into something that had been lived in, defended, renovated, and hidden for longer than the city above would ever know. The lower passage behind him had been practical, with treatment stations, security doors, weapons lockers, route maps, and vampires who looked like they expected to bleed before the night ended. This level was different. The stonework had been preserved where it could be, sealed beneath clear coating and reinforced with steel where it had cracked. Old wooden doors had been fitted with modern locks, antique sconces had been wired with low electric bulbs, and private cameras sat in dark recesses above carved molding, watching every face that passed beneath them.

Elias Voss walked ahead with two guards near him, his steps measured and his shoulders tight from the failed attempt to control the lower checkpoint. Mason followed with one hand against the wall and the other pressed near his bandaged ribs, leaving faint streaks of blood whenever his fingers slid over painted stone. Selene remained on Noctis's left, not close enough to touch him and not far enough to lose sight of his hands. The guards behind them kept their weapons lowered, but the way their fingers stayed near the grips made it clear they had not stopped thinking about them. They were escorting him because that was the shape of the situation, not because any of them believed they could force him to follow.

Noctis did not speak as they moved. He looked through the corridors with enough attention to understand the structure without needing anyone to explain it. The walls carried old family portraits, route plaques, emergency seals, and hidden panels that likely opened into escape corridors or weapon alcoves. Several sections had metal shutters set into the stone, thick enough to block sunlight if any surface breach exposed the lower levels. The coven had placed old-world décor over modern survival design, and the result was not elegant enough to hide the truth. This was a fortified underground estate built inside abandoned infrastructure.

Vampires appeared as word spread. Some came out of side rooms, others paused in upper viewing rails or narrow balconies built above intersections where the corridor opened into wider halls. They looked first at Mason because his missing team members mattered, then at Selene because her presence meant the situation had touched the Death Dealers, and then at Noctis because he did not match anything they expected to see walking through their inner level. His coat was clean. His hands were relaxed. He had no Lycan blood on him, no torn clothing, no visible injury, and no sign that he had come through the same route as the wounded vampires ahead of him. The contrast made several of them step back before they realized they had done it.

A woman in a dark blouse and long coat stepped out from an office doorway and looked at Elias. "What happened to the south team?"

Elias did not slow. "Medical has the report."

"They said an outsider came in with them."

Noctis passed without looking at her.

Another vampire leaned from a side arch, older in face and posture than most of the guards. "Who is he?"

No one answered him.

A younger guard standing near a sealed door looked from Mason's blood to Noctis's clean coat and said, "Why is he in the inner route?"

Noctis ignored the question.

The guard looked offended for half a second, then noticed Selene's eyes shift toward him and closed his mouth. Selene did not speak either, but her silence was different from Noctis's. She was listening to everything, tracking which doors opened, which guards moved, which vampires whispered into radios after the group passed. Twice her gaze cut to side corridors where security teams had repositioned quietly, not blocking Noctis yet but placing bodies between him and the exits.

Noctis noticed them as well.

The coven was tightening around him.

It was subtle enough that an ordinary outsider might mistake it for escort procedure. Two guards fell in behind at the last junction. A side door closed and locked after they passed. One camera above a stone arch adjusted its angle, and a private radio near a guard's collar clicked twice without a voice coming through. Farther ahead, a pair of vampires crossed the corridor in front of them and pretended to be moving somewhere else before turning into a side post with a direct line of sight toward the main hall. They were not ready to attack. They were trying to create layers.

Noctis continued walking.

Mason's breathing worsened before they reached the next intersection. He kept his head forward, but his hand dragged lower along the wall, and the blood beneath his bandage had spread far enough to darken the side of his coat. Selene looked back once, then stopped.

"Mason."

"I'm fine."

"You're not."

"I can walk."

"You're leaving blood on the wall."

"I know."

"Then stop proving it." Selene looked toward one of the nearby guards. "Get a medic to the inner hall."

Elias glanced back. "We already stabilized him."

Selene did not look away from Mason. "No, you kept him upright. That's not the same thing."

Mason drew in a controlled breath and pushed off the wall, forcing himself straighter. "I can give the report."

"You already did enough," Selene said.

Noctis looked at Mason. "He stays conscious until I'm done here."

Selene turned her eyes toward him. "That's all you care about?"

"Right now, yes."

Her jaw tightened, but she did not argue. The answer was cold, but it was also clean. Noctis had not pretended concern he did not feel. Mason had seen the same thing and gave a faint, tired breath that might have been a laugh if he had enough strength for it.

"At least he's honest," Mason said.

Selene looked at him. "Save your air."

They continued. The next hall opened into a broader inner passage with a stone floor polished smooth by years of use. The ceiling rose higher here, supported by old arches reinforced with steel ribs that had been painted black to blend into the shadows. A long glass wall on the left looked into a records chamber where several vampires worked at modern terminals surrounded by shelves of ledgers and sealed archive boxes. On the right, a pair of dark wooden doors stood beneath a crest carved into the lintel, with a keypad mounted beside it and a camera hidden inside the crest's upper curve.

Elias stopped there and turned toward Noctis.

"You're deep inside our coven now," he said. "I can't take you any farther unless you give me something to work with."

Noctis looked at him. "No."

Elias took in a slow breath. "That's not how this works."

"It is tonight."

The nearest guards shifted again. One moved his hand too close to his holster, and Selene's head turned just enough to make him stop. She did not defend Noctis, but she seemed to understand that a weapon drawn in this corridor would not protect anyone. Elias understood it too, which was why his voice stayed low and controlled.

"I'm trying to keep this from getting worse," Elias said.

"Then don't slow me down."

"You think that helps?"

"It helps me."

Elias stared at him for a moment, then glanced at Selene as if looking for support and finding none. Mason pressed his shoulder against the wall, his face pale under the coven lights. Several vampires watched from the records chamber through the glass, hands still on keyboards, eyes fixed on the group outside.

Noctis spoke before Elias could start another procedural argument. "Bring me to your current leader."

Elias frowned. "You mean the route office?"

"No."

"The city regent?"

"No."

Selene studied him. "Then who are you asking for?"

"Whoever has the authority to speak for this coven."

The corridor changed after that. No one moved suddenly, but the watching vampires understood the weight of the request. Administrative authority could be bypassed. Route command could be overruled. A regent could negotiate. What Noctis asked for sat above the visible layers and reached toward elder authority, the part of vampire hierarchy most coven members were never allowed to touch directly.

Elias did not answer right away.

Noctis waited.

At last Elias said, "The elder isn't here."

Noctis looked at him. "Who?"

"Amelia."

Noctis did not react. The name fit the world Gaia had built, and by now that was enough. Surprise had lost usefulness several references ago. He only needed to know whether Amelia was present, awake, and capable of giving the kind of information he needed. If she was not here, the coven had stopped being a direct path.

"When does she return?" he asked.

"Not tonight."

"Then I'm leaving."

That sentence changed the hallway faster than anything before it.

One of the guards looked toward Elias. The older vampire near the record room door turned and spoke into a radio under his breath. The two vampires at the far end of the hall adjusted their positions so they were no longer pretending to be casual observers. Selene's eyes moved from one security point to another, and her expression tightened because she saw the same thing Noctis did. The coven had been uncomfortable with him moving inward. They were more afraid of him walking out.

Elias lifted one hand, palm open, trying to keep the exchange from snapping. "Give us time to contact Amelia's people."

"No."

"We can give you a room while we do it."

"I said I'm leaving."

"It's not a cell."

"Then I can leave."

Elias stopped for a beat.

Noctis looked at him. "That's what I thought."

Mason's eyes lowered slightly, as if the simple exchange had confirmed exactly what he feared. The coven had tried to dress containment as hospitality, and Noctis had stripped the word down before anyone could hide behind it. Selene shifted her weight and looked at Elias.

"Don't do this in a hallway," she said quietly.

Elias did not answer her.

Another voice entered from the far side of the hall. "No, he doesn't walk out."

Kraven came through the inner arch with two guards behind him. He wore a tailored black coat over dark clothing that looked too polished for the lower routes and too modern to be ceremonial. His hair was neat, his expression irritated, and his eyes moved quickly over Mason's injuries before dismissing him as no longer central to the room. He looked at Selene for half a second, then at Elias, then settled on Noctis with the kind of confidence that came from political position rather than combat experience.

"You brought him this far?" Kraven asked Elias.

Elias's face tightened. "This is being handled."

"It doesn't look handled." Kraven stepped closer, then stopped before coming within arm's reach of Noctis. "He knows the route now. He knows the lower entrance. He has seen the inner level. And your plan is to let him leave?"

Noctis looked at him for the first time.

Kraven took that attention as engagement. It was not.

"You can wait in a chamber until Amelia is reached," Kraven said. "No one is threatening you."

"I'm leaving."

"No," Kraven said, too quickly. "You're not."

Elias turned his head slightly. "Kraven."

Kraven ignored him. "You are not walking out of here after seeing this much. I don't care how many Lycans you killed."

Mason spoke from the wall, voice strained. "You should."

Kraven's eyes cut to him. "You are wounded and not thinking clearly."

Mason let out a short breath. "I'm thinking better than you."

Selene looked toward Kraven. "Let Elias handle this."

"I am handling it." Kraven's voice sharpened, and the guards behind him took a half step into the hall. "We are not letting an unknown vampire walk out with our location."

Noctis stood still.

For one second, nothing else moved. The old electric bulbs above the hall hummed faintly. Blood ticked from Mason's bandage onto the stone floor. A guard near the records room swallowed but did not step back.

Then the pressure increased.

It did not arrive as noise. It reached the vampires through their bodies first. Fingers loosened around weapons. Shoulders dropped. One guard's knees bent before he could correct his posture. A glass panel over a route map cracked from the upper corner. The blood inside Mason's fresh bandage pressed outward in a darker stain as his body reacted to the authority filling the hall. The watching vampires in the records chamber backed away from the glass, and several of them hit the shelves behind them.

Noctis looked at Kraven. "You're not in a position to stop me."

Kraven tried to answer.

The pressure expanded through the inner coven before he formed the first word.

Guards hit the floor first. Some dropped to one knee with their rifles clattering against stone, while others went down on both hands, heads lowered, shoulders shaking as bloodline instinct overrode trained posture. Administrative vampires at the side doors fell back into walls or collapsed in the thresholds they had been using to watch. Inside the records chamber, chairs rolled away from desks as their occupants dropped from them. A locked medical cabinet at the far end of the hall rattled, and several stored blood bags burst behind the glass, spilling down the shelves in red sheets.

Elias fell to one knee and caught himself with one hand against the floor. He did not try to speak. Mason slid down the wall harder than before, his wounded side pulling a harsh breath from him as he landed. Selene resisted longer than the others, first lowering into a crouch, then bracing one hand against the stone. Her jaw tightened, and her eyes stayed on Noctis even as the pressure forced her down to one knee. She did not reach for her guns. She understood that drawing them would not make her stronger.

Kraven lasted longer than the guards behind him, but not by much.

He tried to keep his feet through will and pride, and both failed at the same time. His knees struck the floor. One hand dropped to the stone to stop his chest from following, and his face twisted with the effort of staying half upright. Fear reached him first, then humiliation, then anger trying to cover both. Noctis watched the progression without interest.

The pressure continued past the hallway.

It moved through the coven's inner level, into the lower concourse, through treatment rooms, archives, vehicle bays, guard posts, and private quarters. Doors shook in their frames. Old portraits shifted on their hooks. A chandelier fitted with electric bulbs swung over an empty sitting chamber until dust fell from the ceiling seams. Radios filled with static. A technician in the lower monitor room dropped his headset and pressed both hands to the desk as the screens flickered one by one. Medics trying to stabilize the wounded from earlier leaned over tables to keep from falling onto their patients.

The coven did not have time to sound an alarm. The pressure itself became the alarm.

Farther below, something older reacted.

Noctis turned his head before anyone said a word.

Beneath the active coven level, behind stone-lined shafts and sealed elder vaults, old blood shifted toward awareness. The slumbering vampires had not fully awakened, but their bodies responded to an authority that had entered their coven without permission and pressed down on every lesser bloodline above them. Stone lids moved by small degrees inside hidden chambers. Old locks vibrated. Attendants stationed outside the elder wing were forced flat against the floor, their palms spread on cold stone as the presences below stirred.

Elias's face changed when he felt it. The fear in him moved away from Noctis for the first time and toward the sealed chambers below. Kraven's eyes widened, and the anger he had been using to hold himself together thinned. Mason lifted his head weakly, breathing harder now. Selene felt it too, and her eyes shifted down the hall toward the direction of the elder wing.

The old presences pushed closer to waking.

Noctis raised one hand toward that direction.

His voice did not rise.

"Go back to sleep."

The command traveled through the coven through blood rather than volume.

The movement beneath the inner level stopped. The stone lids in the elder vaults settled back into place. The old pressure that had begun to rise withdrew into the sealed chambers. In the darkness below, opened eyes closed again. The attendants outside the elder wing remained pressed to the floor, unable to move even after the locks stopped vibrating.

Noctis lowered his hand.

The pressure decreased.

The coven did not recover immediately. Vampires remained on the floor, shaking or breathing hard, their bodies slower than their minds in accepting that the weight had lifted. Weapons lay where they had fallen. Blood dripped from the cracked medical cabinet in the distance. Elias stayed on one knee, one hand still braced on the stone, and looked toward the elder wing as if he needed confirmation that what he had felt had actually happened. Mason sat against the wall, one hand pressed hard over his bandage while Selene remained kneeling several steps away from Noctis. Kraven forced himself to lift his head and looked around for someone to blame.

Noctis walked toward Selene.

The nearest vampires tried to shift out of his path and failed to move quickly. Selene looked up as he approached, her eyes steady despite the pressure that had put her down. Her fingers flexed once against the floor, not reaching for a weapon, only measuring distance. Noctis stopped in front of her and lowered himself beside her with no urgency. He lifted one hand and placed a single finger beneath her chin.

Selene's eyes sharpened.

Noctis raised her face gently enough that the gesture did not injure her, but no one watching mistook gentleness for weakness. The corridor saw him touch her. Kraven saw it. Elias saw it. Mason saw it from the wall, breathing through blood loss and pain. What none of them heard was the voice that entered only Selene's mind.

I'm not here to hurt your coven. I needed someone high enough to answer a few things. Amelia isn't here, so I'm done here.

Selene's breathing changed by a fraction. Telepathy did not seem to be the part that startled her most. It was the control behind it. He entered without tearing through her thoughts, without forcing pain through her skull, without making her kneel any lower than she already was. He spoke privately because he chose to, not because the room could stop him from speaking aloud.

One more thing, Noctis continued. Don't trust Kraven. Look into what really happened with Lucian. The story you were given is missing pieces.

Selene did not look toward Kraven. That control came fast enough to prove why she had survived as long as she had. The warning struck her anyway. Kraven's name was not distant politics. He stood in the same hall, still recovering on one knee, trying to cover fear with anger. Lucian's name reached deeper, into the foundation of the war she had fought and the history that had shaped her life. Noctis gave no proof, no explanation, and no memory. He only placed the warning where no one else could hear it.

Then he removed his finger from beneath her chin and stood.

No one tried to stop him this time.

He walked past Elias, past Mason, past Kraven, and past the guards still recovering across the hall. Several vampires lowered their eyes as he passed. Others kept their heads down because they lacked the strength to raise them. Kraven's lips parted as if he wanted to say something, but his body remembered the pressure before his pride could speak through it. Elias stayed silent. Selene remained on one knee for a moment longer, face controlled and unreadable.

At the edge of the corridor, Noctis stepped into the shadow beneath a stone archway and used Wraith Step.

His body disappeared without sound. A fraction later, his presence vanished from the coven's senses as well, leaving only the damaged hall, the fallen weapons, the leaking blood cabinet, and the vampires still trying to stand inside the space he had vacated.

The first voice to return belonged to Kraven.

"Seal the south route," he said, rougher than before. "Pull the camera feeds. I want every checkpoint checked."

No one moved quickly.

Kraven noticed and raised his voice. "Now."

The guards began to obey, but fear slowed them. One reached for his rifle and picked it up with both hands, then looked toward the archway where Noctis had vanished. Another tried to stand and had to brace himself against the wall. Elias pushed himself up with more control than most, adjusted his coat, and looked toward a guard near the far door.

"Confirm the elder wing," Elias said. "No one opens anything without my order."

Kraven turned on him. "Your order?"

Elias looked back, and for once his patience had hard edges. "Unless you want to explain to Amelia why the vault attendants are scraping themselves off the floor."

Kraven's face tightened. He did not answer.

Mason tried to stand and failed. His hand slipped against the wall, leaving a darker blood smear. Selene reached him before he tried again, putting one arm under his shoulder and forcing him to lean against her whether he liked it or not.

"You need medical," she said.

Mason breathed through his teeth. "I know."

"Then stop making me say it."

He gave a faint nod and let her help him up. Several nearby vampires looked at Selene, probably expecting her to speak about what Noctis had done or what he had said when he touched her chin. She gave them nothing. Her face remained controlled, her attention fixed on Mason's wound, her posture no different from a Death Dealer helping an injured teammate out of a damaged hall.

As she turned him toward the medical corridor, her eyes moved once toward Kraven.

It lasted less than a second.

Kraven was speaking to a guard, ordering route closures and demanding that every recording be copied to his office. His voice was steadier now, but the anger in it still carried the shape of fear. Selene looked away before he could notice, lowering her attention back to Mason's footing as they moved past the cracked glass and fallen weapons.

Mason leaned heavier against her shoulder after the first turn.

"What did he say to you?" he asked quietly.

Selene kept walking.

"Not here."

Mason looked at her, then toward the hall behind them where Kraven's voice still carried through the damaged corridor. He did not ask again. Selene guided him into the medical passage, and behind them Elias continued ordering guards toward the elder wing while the coven tried to put its inner level back into working order before Amelia's people learned how badly the night had gone.
