Chapter 20 - The Tailed Beasts

Raven lowered the scroll of the Yin Seal, her eyes narrowing as the glow of the Uzumaki seals in the chamber faded. Her breath escaped in a long exhale. "This will take me time to master. Not even Tsunade could have learned this overnight. No one could." She placed the parchment aside, leaning back as her masked gaze swept over the stone walls lined with faint chakra etchings. The chamber pulsed softly with the hum of natural energy. "This place will be my training ground. When my true body grows older, I'll come here myself. My new parents won't notice as I get stronger."

Her arms folded across her chest, a colder thought stirring. "The Sage of Six Paths will have to answer for his manipulations. Destiny is not a game to tamper with." Her lips curved faintly beneath the mask, the sound of her chuckle low. "The irony isn't lost on me. I chose my death, only to be resurrected by the Outsider. Who has power beyond even the Sage himself. His power isn't infinite after all."

Her mind turned to Kurama, the Nine-Tails, the beast sealed away in fragments. She clenched her fist against her knee. "Kurama's halves are split… Yin sealed in Minato, Yang in Naruto. I'll need to see them reunited if Naruto's power is ever to be complete. And maybe one day… Kurama can be freed. He's not the monster they say. He's a prisoner. A victim of the First Hokage, the Second, and every hand that caged him." Her voice hardened into a vow. "If Naruto can befriend him, then Kurama could become his greatest ally… just as Yumi is mine."

The sound of dragging reached her ears before the fox emerged from the tunnel. Yumi's tails hauled a massive boar, its tusks scraping the floor. Her golden eyes gleamed. "Dinner's served. Prepare this for me, Raven. Let's have a feast."

Raven let out a weary sigh. "Of course. I'm the one with the knife, aren't I?" She drew a blade, carving thick strips from the carcass. The chamber soon filled with the rich scent of sizzling meat as she fried the cuts over a small flame.

They ate in silence for a time, until Raven set her portion down and fixed Yumi with a searching look. "Yumi, what do you know of Kurama? The Nine-Tails sealed inside Naruto. Where did he come from?"

Yumi chewed slowly, her tails curling, before she answered with calm certainty. "Kurama, and the others like him, were born from the Ten-Tails. Hagoromo Ōtsutsuki, the Sage of Six Paths, split the Ten-Tails' chakra into nine beings to prevent its resurrection. Shukaku the One-Tail, Matatabi the Two-Tails, and so on… until Kurama, the strongest of them all."

Raven's eyes narrowed behind the mask. "So Kurama is chakra given form. Intelligent, alive, but bound." She leaned forward, her voice lowering. "Then tell me, Yumi… are you like him? Are you too a manifestation of chakra?"
