Chapter 23 - 23: Forming a Team

Dominic Toretto had a gut feeling.

After years of uneasy peace in Los Santos, one man's arrival was about to stir the city into chaos.

Hijackings, murders, car crashes… those were just the beginning.

With this guy around, Los Santos wouldn't know peace again.

The whole city would be dragged into the storm.

No one would escape.

"Who is he? Any info yet?" Dom asked, flipping open a photo of Leon—snapped by a bystander at the crash site.

The van was caved in, unmistakable.

Brian O'Conner leaned over for a look, then shook his head. "Nothing. My guess? He's new to town."

Dom stroked his chin, frowning in thought.

Meanwhile, O'Neill's tweet had spread like wildfire.

Now the entire U.S. was talking about Leon.

He'd hit trending on Twitter. His name was plastered across news feeds.

Overnight, he'd become a sensation.

And the man at the center of it all?

He was sitting at his doorstep, eating a beef pizza, perfectly relaxed.

No worries in sight.

If a car came in needing repairs, he'd tune it in minutes. Maybe even recommend a few upgrades.

Earning a few thousand dollars a day was no problem.

Not everyone was a millionaire pulling million-dollar orders.

Just then, the door next door opened.

Letty Ortiz, dressed down in casual clothes, came over.

She pulled up a chair beside Leon and sat.

"…Thanks for saving me."

It was rare to see her this feminine.

As a girl who'd grown up around cars, Letty usually came off tough.

On top of that, she knew hand-to-hand combat—no pushover in a fight.

If it hadn't been for the surprise ambush the other day, she never would've been caught off guard.

"Why were they after you?" Leon asked, glancing over.

"I ruined their deal."

Leon blinked. He hadn't expected her to be that blunt.

Letty explained:

"They're part of a car-smuggling ring. They also run loan-sharking schemes.

A friend of mine got caught in their trap—took a loan to buy a car, couldn't pay it back.

I busted in, got my friend out. Now they're after me."

Her tone was calm. Yesterday's chaos had been a lesson.

Next time, she'd be ready—armed, cautious, never caught unprepared again.

Leon nodded. "Then be careful in the city. Keep your guard up."

"…Actually," Letty hesitated, clearly nervous. "I don't want to go back into the city for work. I want to stay with you. I want to join your crew."

Leon froze.

The request came so suddenly it caught him off guard.

Just then—

Ding!

Team system unlocked. Members share upgrade benefits. Each time the host levels up, teammates receive half of the stat increase. In return, the host gains 50% of their boost as well.

In short:

If Leon leveled up, Letty would gain +50 to all stats.

And Leon would get half of that back—+25 more.

That meant every level-up now gave him +125 total.

The bigger the crew, the higher the numbers.

With 4 members, that's +100 extra.

With 40? That's +4000.

Leon was stunned.

This system really had hidden functions… and forming a team only meant more gains.

"Are you sure about this?" He pointed at his modest garage. "I'm just a mechanic. You really want to work with me?"

"Maybe you can fool others, but not me." Letty's voice was firm.

"Oh? How so?"

"On the surface it's a repair shop, but you're different. You own a one-of-a-kind supercar. You've built custom engines. Your skills are insane."

Her eyes lit up as she spoke, passion growing.

"I want to join you. Following someone this good is the only way to get stronger!"

She was no ordinary grease monkey—she could tell engines apart by sound alone.

The roar of the Silver Marauder was unforgettable. Its fierce, guttural tone was etched into her memory.

She wanted to learn that craft. And more than that—she wanted to ride with him.

Leon smirked. "I only pay 2,000 a month for the garage work. You still in?"

"Yes!" Letty's eyes sparkled. She leaned in close, brushing his arm—her enthusiasm easy to misread.

Leon's heart skipped. She was dangerously tempting.

In truth, Letty wouldn't normally take a low-paying gig.

But this wasn't about money.

He'd hinted himself—"repair business" was only part of the picture.

The real jobs would be worth far, far more.

Two thousand? Try twenty grand, and that'd still be light.

Ding!

Letty Ortiz has officially joined your team. Level: 0.

Leon lit a cigarette and grinned.

His crew was born.

From here, it was war—across Los Santos, across America, across the whole world.

Ding!

Congratulations on forming your first team. Reward unlocked: Medusa S – engineered for the curves.

Leon chuckled.

Recruiting teammates came with free cars now?
