Chapter 20 - Jonah's Old Files

Jonah had spent most of his life believing that every mystery eventually became paperwork.

People disappeared. Someone filed a report.

Companies cheated. Someone created a record.

Buildings changed owners. A signature remained somewhere.

Even lies left paper behind.

That belief had made his work interesting when everyone else found it boring.

But after meeting Pimo, Jonah began to understand that some records existed because people were trying to hide things much larger than money.

He returned to the office before sunrise.

The building was empty except for a cleaner on the ground floor.

Jonah unlocked the archive room and switched on the yellow ceiling light.

He carried the folder with the black mark to a table.

He had first noticed the symbol two years earlier while digitizing old missing-person reports.

At the time, he thought it was a police notation that had fallen out of use.

Then he found it on files from different departments.

Different cities.

Different decades.

Always beside people who had vanished under strange conditions.

One farmer disappeared after claiming that a man with no face had offered him land.

A local politician vanished after suddenly gaining unusual influence over people around him.

A merchant from sixty-eight years earlier disappeared with his entire household. His final known purchase was listed only as "six black tokens."

Jonah had assumed the phrase meant gambling chips.

Now he was not so sure.

He opened another box.

Dust filled the air.

Inside were municipal records from more than eighty years ago.

He searched until his eyes hurt.

At seven in the morning, he found a name.

MALREC FOUNDATION FOR PUBLIC ADVANCEMENT.

Jonah frowned.

The foundation had existed for only eleven months before being dissolved.

Its purpose was described in harmless words: education, public health, advancement of disadvantaged communities.

But its property list was strange.

Underground rooms.

Old temples.

Warehouses near trade routes.

The same pattern he had seen around Vale Maritime.

Jonah copied the pages.

Then he found a photograph attached to the file.

It showed nine men standing outside a stone building.

Eight wore suits.

The ninth stood behind them.

His face was unclear because of damage to the photograph.

But Jonah could see his hand.

A black coin rested on his palm.

Jonah sat back.

"What are you?"

A voice behind him answered.

"That is what we were hoping you could tell us."

Jonah spun around so quickly his chair fell over.

Kieran stood beside the archive shelf.

Jonah grabbed the nearest heavy object, which happened to be a stapler.

Kieran looked at it.

"Dangerous."

"How did you get in here?"

"Door."

"It was locked."

"Was it?"

Jonah looked toward the door.

It was still locked.

He slowly turned back.

"You're one of them."

Kieran's smile disappeared.

"One of who?"

"The people Pimo was afraid of."

"Maybe."

"That's not an answer."

"You and Pimo have that in common."

Jonah picked up the photograph.

"If you're here to threaten me, you'll need to wait. I found something."

That was not the reaction Kieran expected.

"You're not scared?"

"I'm extremely scared. But I also spent six hours in a room with bad ventilation, so I'm angry too."

Kieran laughed.

"I definitely like you more than Riven."

"I don't know who that is."

"Lucky."

Jonah showed him the Malrec file.

Kieran's face changed at once.

"Where did you find this?"

"Old property records. Does the name mean something?"

Kieran looked at the pages but did not answer.

"You need to come with me."

Jonah pushed his glasses higher.

"That sentence has never improved a morning."

"You are in danger."

"Because of this?"

"Because Pimo spoke to you. Because you saw his mark. Because you have records someone has spent decades hiding. Pick one."

Jonah stared at him.

Then he looked at the archive door.

"Can I bring the files?"

"Yes."

"My computer too?"

Kieran stared.

"No."

"Then give me ten minutes."

"Five."

Jonah copied the most important digital records onto two small drives and placed them in his pocket.

Before leaving, he hesitated.

"My manager will notice I'm gone."

"Leave a message."

Jonah wrote that he was sick.

Kieran read it.

"You wrote three paragraphs."

"It should be believable."

"Normal people just say fever."

"Then normal people are careless."

Ten minutes later, Jonah stood at the edge of the hidden harbor.

Darian's field immediately affected him.

He turned around.

"I think we took a wrong road."

Kieran grabbed his shoulder.

"No. Keep walking."

"There's nothing there."

"Exactly."

Jonah disliked that answer.

When they crossed the barrier, the harbor seemed to appear all at once.

People.

Training equipment.

Weapons.

Strange lights.

Jonah stopped breathing for a moment.

Riven walked past carrying a bowl.

"Another one?"

Kieran pointed at Jonah.

"This one uses paper."

"Terrifying."

Jonah looked from one person to another.

"What is this place?"

Kael approached.

"Temporary."

"That's not what I meant."

"I know."

Jonah recognized Kael from something he could not place. A newspaper? A security image? No. The feeling disappeared before he could catch it.

Darian's field, perhaps.

Kieran gave Kael the Malrec papers.

Kael read them carefully.

Dev joined him.

When Dev saw the photograph, his expression changed.

"This building."

"You know it?" Jonah asked.

"I have seen drawings of it."

Darian came closer.

"The western archive."

Kael looked at him.

"I thought it was destroyed."

"So did I."

Jonah pointed at the property transfer.

"It wasn't. It changed names six times. The current owner is a company called North Basin Restoration."

"Vale?"

"Not directly."

Jonah opened another page.

"But North Basin's director is also on the board of a Vale Maritime subsidiary."

Kieran whistled.

"Paper man is useful."

Jonah ignored him.

Arin moved closer to the photograph.

The moment he saw it, the voices inside his head rose sharply.

He grabbed the table.

Mira caught his arm.

"Arin?"

His eyes remained fixed on the damaged man in the photograph.

"I know him."

Kael turned.

"Malrec?"

"I don't know his face."

Arin closed his eyes.

A memory struck him.

A stone room.

Dozens of people standing in a circle.

A man speaking.

Not all power should be inherited by chance.

Another voice answered.

Power cannot be given without taking something back.

Arin gasped.

The vision changed.

A hand placed a bright metal disk into a fire.

The disk turned black.

Someone screamed.

Arin opened his eyes.

"The coins weren't created by the shadows."

Darian looked at him.

"What did you see?"

"Guardians made the first ones."

No one spoke.

Jonah looked around the group.

"I have many questions."

Riven nodded.

"Get in line."

Kael placed both hands on the table.

"Then we find the western archive."

Jonah cleared his throat.

"There is another problem."

"What?"

He pulled out a recent property record.

"Someone bought it three days ago."

Kael read the name.

CORVIN VALE.
