Chapter 17 - The love of angels

in the past

There was a dark age, lost between the lines of Genesis: the time when a portion of angels abandoned their posts… fascinated by humanity.

In those days, Earth was young and beautiful, yet it already carried within it the seed of corruption.

Humans grew, built cities, mastered plains and mountains.

They were fragile, imperfect—but driven by an inner fire even angels did not understand.

And it was precisely that fire which drew some of them.

For angels were not meant to love.

Even less to desire.

But the light of humankind—its emotions, its freedom—seduced a faction of curious angels.

They descended in secret, watching the humans, walking among them in physical form.

At first, it was only observation.

Then came admiration.

Then attachment.

Then… love.

And from these forbidden unions were born the Nephilim.

Beings powerful and tall, their blood mixing mortal flesh with celestial essence.

Some were good: protectors, humble, pious.

But many were violent, prideful, blood-drinkers, born with overwhelming strength which they used for their own interests.

Within a few generations, the Nephilim became a self-proclaimed caste of chosen rulers.

They burned villages, imposed their will, ruled over humans as tyrants.

Everywhere they walked, suffering followed.

And the cruelty of the world rose.

Too high.

For even humans—already sinners—would never have reached such violence without the influence of their celestial half-brothers.

Given the disastrous circumstances spreading across Earth, the council of angels gathered. Not a simple council of Choir leaders—no, this was a reunion of all pure angelic entities (the angels created directly by GOD, not human souls). Such a gathering had only happened once before: on the day Lucifer and Lilith introduced sin into the world.

The Thrones floated in silence.

The Dominations stood upright.

The Virtues folded their wings, ready to receive the announcement.

Even the Seraphim were present.

---

Sera:

"I think you already know why this meeting was called, don't you?

For those who do not… Hamiel."

Hamiel: (nods)

"I will remind you of the current situation on Earth.

Of course, everyone knows how Earth was corrupted after the act committed by Lucifer and Lilith.

But now this corruption grows even more… for one reason."

All nodded.

Hamiel:

"Among us…

some angels descended to Earth, drawn to the sons and daughters of man."

The shock was immediate.

The Principalities did not understand.

The Powers tightened their spears.

The Dominations exchanged glances.

Hamiel:

"They loved humans.

They married them.

They had children with them.

These children… the Nephilim… now live among humans."

He continued:

"The Nephilim are powerful.

Too powerful for mankind.

Some protected villages, healed the sick, taught justice.

But others…

others fell into evil.

They rule through fear.

They crush the weak.

And they spread sin."

The angels lowered their eyes.

Hamiel:

"And so the entire Earth suffers.

Violence increases.

Cruelty spreads."

Murmurs rose across the assembly; all were worried about what would follow.

After a moment, Sera glanced at Gabriel.

Gabriel:

"Here are the names of those who united with humans.

Let them not be judged… but understood."

Sera shot an inquisitive look at Gabriel.

Clearly, she was not supposed to say that.

Gabriel looked away.

Sera knew that the phrase Gabriel had spoken applied to herself—she truly did not want her brothers and sisters to suffer the same fate as Lucifer. She sighed; she had not yet made a decision. She wanted to reassure herself of something first.

Gabriel listed the names:

Armariel, leader of a Choir of Virtues

Sahaqiel, Principality, Observer of the Firmaments

Rimmon, Principality of the Plains

Zophar, minor Throne

Uriel, Seraphim guardian of the gate of the Garden of Eden and of the Trees of Knowledge (essentially the tree of corruption, like in Hazbin Hotel) and of Life

Mikhael, commander of Heaven's archangelic army and of the Virtues

Etc…

Sera:

"Before deciding what will follow, I would like…"

A portal opened in the middle of the assembly.

Everyone already knew who it was.

Mikhael:

"I apologize for my lateness. It will not happen again."

At that moment, Mikhael's voice—his tone—was hard and solemn.

He knew the situation was serious.

He lowered his head in respect.

Sera: (piercing gaze)

"As I was saying… I would like one of those involved to give us their version of the events.

Mikhael, I believe you are the most capable of speaking to us."

Mikhael remained silent for a few seconds, thinking carefully about his next words.

Mikhael:

"You want to know why we… why I did this?

Why some angels crossed a line we had sworn never to touch?"

He gave a nervous, almost guilty smile.

"I would like to tell you it was a plan, that perhaps the FATHER influenced us from wherever He may be to accomplish this—but… no.

That would be too simple, and honestly, too good to be true.

The truth is… complicated.

Very complicated."

"We were taught to observe humans… not to love them."

His gaze softened.

"I remember GOD's words when Adam was created."

They will be fragile. Unstable. Reckless. Cruel to their own kind, and sinners.

But also… luminous in a way you will not understand.

They love despite pain.

They hope despite failure.

They dream even when everything collapses.

And you…

you will witness this, again and again—and then you will understand why I love humanity so deeply.

He lowered his head.

"And one day… watching wasn't enough."

"We got closer.

We wanted to understand.

Then… we wanted to feel, too.

Some resisted.

Others failed.

And others…"

He breathed deeply.

"…like me, didn't even try to resist."

Mikhael finally understood why his brother had united with Lilith.

He let out a nervous laugh.

"Yes, I admit it.

Not very angelic of me.

Some model I turned out to be…"

He placed a hand on the golden railing.

"You probably think angels don't fall in love like humans.

And you're right.

We have no impulses.

No need for companionship.

No inner void to fill.

We are born complete…

and yet, that is precisely the problem."

"When we see beings so imperfect, yet trying every day to be better, to help others, to understand one another…

Beings who are sinners—all of them—yet some walk in righteousness and attempt to change their corrupted world…

I observed them, and those humans I can call good are… wonderful."

Mikhael stopped talking, signaling he had finished.

The assembly absorbed his words.

And Sera weighed the pros and cons.

Then another halo appeared—not the original Uriel, who was guarding the Garden, but one of his avatars, bearing his recognizable glow: a soft, nostalgic light.

Sera:

"Uriel, I have already listened to Mikhael's words. I don't think this is necessary."

Huriel (Uriel's avatar):

"No. I wish to speak as well, so that you may better understand us.

I want to tell you about the one I fell in love with."

"Alcmene."

That simple name made the air vibrate with a warm resonance—proof that Huriel's aura was overflowing.

Many angels felt it and were startled to see Huriel—usually distant and silent—so expressive.

"Just… a human woman.

Soft, strong, resilient, with enough determination to push back winter itself.

She had nothing extraordinary in the eyes of the world.

But to me…

she was everything."

He closed his eyes for a moment.

"You cannot imagine what it feels like when…

a simple human looks you straight in the eyes…

and you realize you are the one panicking."

A few angels chuckled—those who had experienced something similar.

Even those uninvolved smiled.

Mikhael himself allowed a small grin.

"Alcmene wasn't perfect.

She was stubborn.

She complained when she was cold.

She hated insects.

She even asked if I could eradicate them.

And her aim with a sandal was surgical when I annoyed her."

Before Huriel could continue, Sera straightened slightly, her wings trembling with a cold glow.

Her gaze on Huriel was not harsh… but it was not gentle either.

Sera:

"Huriel… your words are sincere.

But there is another aspect you have not mentioned."

The hall tensed.

Sera:

"You, Mikhael, Armariel, Sahaqiel…

You did not only become attached to humans.

You abandoned your duties.

Left your posts.

We had to fill voids that should never have existed."

Huriel lowered his gaze slightly, but did not waver.

Sera:

"You disappeared for several years.

Without warning.

Without orders.

Without authorization.

Do you know what this caused?

A general panic among our family.

A fear that you were corrupted, captured,

or lost in the darkness born of Sin."

Huriel:

"Sera… you are right.

We did abandon our roles.

But perhaps you can understand:

We angels do not love like humans.

Not with fragile hearts.

Not with emptiness to fill.

We love with… the absolute."

He searched for his words, then smiled faintly.

"…as if a piece of the light GOD gave us

had found a mirror."

(I know many won't appreciate what I'm about to do now, but ah—"I'm human, after all.")

Huriel began to sing:

---

Huriel's Song

We were not born to love the way mortals do,

Our hearts do not tremble, our words are always true,

But one day, a human gaze caught me unprepared,

And I understood even an angel can feel fear laid bare.

They walk while stumbling, they live while bleeding,

Yet despite their faults, they keep on dreaming.

And we, children of light, perfect by creation,

Saw in their eyes another form of perfection.

Chorus:

To love for an angel is not to breathe —

It is to burn with a flame nothing can sheathe.

It is not a craving, nor a need to depend,

It is an eternal choice, a vow without end.

You speak of our guard posts, abandoned in our plight,

But Sera, listen: I never abandoned the Light.

I watched over the Earth by watching her soul.

Yes, I loved… but my love did not destroy,

It did not breed hatred, nor awaken the void.

If some Nephilim fell deep into corruption,

It was not love — but freedom — that shaped their hearts' destruction.

Chorus:

To love for an angel is to open infinity,

To see in a breath the beauty of humanity.

It is not a whim, nor a sin to regret,

It is a spark of the Father… one none can forget.

Bridge (soft):

And if I left my post for a few mortal nights,

It was because her laughter outweighed endless fights.

Alcmene, a simple woman, taught me a revelation…

That an imperfect heart can purify a whole legion.

Final (bright, powerful):

So judge me, Sera, if this is your role,

But know that my love never tarnished my soul.

I am Huriel the Guardian, and my flame stands still:

To love is not sin — but to understand pain's will.

And if love is a fault — then let it be eternal.

For through it, an angel may become… more faithful.
